Playa Largo Resort & Spa, Autograph Collection

Key Largo, Florida Keys

Virgin rating

The hotel

The first island you’ll hit as you drive through the keys is Key Largo, most famous for it’s watersports with reef snorkelling, diving, and glass bottom boat tours out of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park as must-do activities. Neighbouring the state park you’ll find Playa Largo set on 14.5 acres of secluded shoreline, providing your own piece of paradise to stay whilst exploring this part of Florida’s famous archipalageo. The private beach is the only thing between you and the sparkling waters of Florida Bay, where you can enjoy a range of watersports right from the hotel as well as venturing out to nearby attractions (of which there are plenty). There is a laid-back feel to the resort, perfectly in keeping with the area, but that doesn’t stop the facilities and service being up to standard. From a beach shack restaurant to a ceviche bar, all tastebuds are catered for, La Marea is a particularly great choice for locally sourced seafood and freshly handmade artisan breads and pizzas. When you’re seeking serenity after all the activity, book in at Ocean Spa where you can try specially formulated scrubs using coffee grounds, sugar, and salt. The top class service doesn’t end when you get to your room, an iPad is on hand to offer on-demand services to ensure your stay is up to scratch.

My husband and I come down to Playa Largo a couple times a year and it never disappoints. This time we had the pleasure of meeting Jean at Sandbar. He was a great bartender! Very happy and friendly. We arrived at the resort in the middle of a rare tropical storm, raining buckets and the wind threatening to 'rearrange the landscape' Despite this, the staff were welcoming and helpful. After a comfortable night's sleep, we observed the hotel team working hard to reset the premises, sweeping, cleaning and all the while working to keep their guests happy. Come the afternoon, there was little evidence of the previous night's destruction to be seen. And still the staff kept up their constant customer service and friendly persona. How about the hotel? Well, scrumptious rooms, comfortable beds. Plenty of restaurant options. Musical entertainment. Book swap, children's soft play area, small beach area, hot tub, large but unheated pool, hammocks and plenty of sunbeds. There's a great sunset celebration, great cocktails and great food. Plus they don't, like some other places, charge a hefty resort fee. This is a wonderful place and we look forward to revisiting again in the not to distant future. Read less

Beautiful property. Nice large pool. Iguanas are plentiful. Good sized rooms. Overall, however, it does not feel like a typical resort experience if you are an experienced traveler. Everything seems to be an extra fee. Beach area isn’t great. Beach towels are subpar. The best part about the resort? By far, the staff. Elisabeth at the front desk is the reason for the four star rating and deserves 5 stars (and more) herself. She was so genuinely kind, knowledgeable, and helpful. It made our day each time we saw her smiling face. She always went out of her way to see how we were doing, and even knew about an issue before we had said a thing! The breakfast crew was also lovely. Very kind and great service. We’d go back- but only if Elisabeth was working! Read less
