The Reach, A Waldorf Astoria Resort

Key West, Florida Keys

The hotel

A Waldorf Astoria Resort, The Reach effortlessly combines the effervescence of a Mediterranean resort with a more romantic, intimate setting. Boasting its own natural beach — the only one on the island — it is chic in atmosphere but ultimately relaxing. Water sports abound, including sailing and kayaking. Alternatively, don your snorkel gear and explore a world beneath the waves — just as colourful and exciting as the world above! For landlubbers, Duval Street is 1 block away and offers a wide range of bars, restaurants and shops as well as vibrant nightlife which rocks into the early hours. Each well-equipped guest room is a home-from-home but more than that, you’ve your own balcony too — perfect for breakfast and pre-dinner drinks, the latter very romantic at sunset. Enjoy a steak or seafood at Spencer's By The Sea; they also serve a mean cocktail!

First, I love Key West, and have now stayed at this hotel four times in four years. I've been weighing the point of writing this review, because it just seems that the hotel doesn't seem to care at all. I know it's not really their fault because they were bought by Hilton, but like other reviewers have said, this hotel does not match the price and does NOT deserve a 3.5 star rating. I'm giving it one star even though I obviously like things about it--it's relaxing to sit at the bar and enjoy the views, etc. But the bartender was borderline rude the whole time, which kind of ruined even that? (I don't remember her name, and I do recognize some of the servers who have been there forever, and they're very nice, but we just don't tend to sit at a table). Every time, I'm more disappointed with the rooms. First of all, they're borderline dirty. Stained furniture, etc. They do NOT look like the hotel pictures, the hotel hasn't maintained the place at all--seems like the same old outdoor cushions as four years ago, for example. Further, some of the courtyard view rooms are super dark--not at all what you would expect for the price. I booked through the hotel website, offered to pay for an upgrade based on an option sent by the hotel itself and spent over $1400 and like 60,000 points on three nights at this hotel, and still couldn't get a high floor room (come on, the hotel is 5 stories high, I consistently request a high floor, even offered to pay more for it, and no luck--it was the most stressful start ever to a vacation that I'd been looking forward to). Ocean view? Sure, sort of, through the entire courtyard you could see it over there. Also, weirdly, you get an email from the hotel concierge before arriving--and this girl hasn't worked there in months if you check Linkedin. I've been patient, I've given the hotel more than enough chances, and they fully deserve this review even though I can tell from others I've read & the hotel reply that they flat out don't care. Maybe the one-star review will help get them down from that absurd 3.5 star rating they somehow maintain. I'm in KW at least three times a year, more if I get my way--and there are such better options that cost less--and other hotels in the heart of KW do have beaches, if you're in the market for a room check out higher end options on the other end of Duval--you'll prob pay less and get better quality. If the beach is important to you, you'll be frustrated because the last two times I've stayed at the Reach, you couldn't really swim in the ocean because of all the weeds washed up near the beach. All in all, I still managed to have an amazingly fun trip, but it had nothing to do with this hotel, which was the dark point in the whole experience. My higher-rated "service" mark below is strictly because we had a great server at breakfast one day, whose name I should have remembered so he could get credit--he was wearing hot pink sunglasses--and I would have given him a perfect "score" if I didn't want to reflect well on some of his colleagues who didn't deserve it. I rarely write poor reviews as I do my homework well. I took this hotel on “face value” being a Waldorf etc and Hilton Honors. I never read the reviews - my error. Location- perfect. Close to everything. Staff- hit or miss. Some were fabulous. Geoff at front desk was lovely. Out door bartender - delightful gal. Others - not so much. Shop staff barely interacted with you. Room - I paid $1968 for 4 nights. I expect a clean bed. When I pulled down linens - clearly not a fresh bed. It took a while for housekeeping to come take care of the matter. The room is small, no dresser and the smallest closet I have encountered world wide. We asked for 3 luggage racks as we needed to live out our suitcases. We eventually received them but took 4 hours and repeated calls. The room was clean and no bugs. That was a plus The bed was very comfortable but the linens are ok.Surprised, I have no complaints on the pillows. The room should be set for 3 when three are expected. 3 glasses, cups, and enough towels. The room needs to be renovated-overall tired and dated The safe did not work, I needed to call for repairs and wait instead of being by the pool. They were prompt and a battery needed changing. Our sink - did not drain, I had to call for repairs. With all my calls - they rang and rang. Other times clicked and I lost the call. It was frustrating. The phone should be answered by the second ring. The outdoor corridors and balcony are filthy. They need some one to power wash and paint. It is dismal and doesn’t bode well on check in. The pool area and beach is lovely. The Italian ice that was given out on a very hot day was well appreciated. I would encourage the management to teach their staff how to recognize repairs that are needed, keep up maintenance that is required and know when linens need to be updated. Also hire a few more staff to bump up response time on phone and room calls. I don’t think it would take much to turn this place around to earn a much higher rating. Read less

The $100 a day resort charge is outrageous. You need to pay for parking daily. You will not have someone attending to the beach at all beach hours. Seaweed was terrible. Not to mention the room floor felt Sandy and the cleaning staff came at 4:30 one day and then 10:30 the next morning and asked us to leave! Crazy! I give it two star because of the location and how nice the resort looks. Read less

The hotel was quiet and relaxing just a block or two from Duval Street (the quiet end). The private beach was a plus. The food and service from the restaurant and pool side was very good. Will definitely consider this property for any future stays.
