Isla Bella

Marathon Key, Florida Keys

The hotel

Far from Florida’s frenetic pace, you’ll wind through tropical landscapes to reach this relaxed 24 acre beach resort, where five fabulous pools and a mile of waterfront await your arrival. The guest rooms have a contemporary beach vibe – not that you’ll be looking at the décor, with every room guaranteed an ocean view. As you step onto the sands, you’ll find dunes, hammocks, and tiki huts, as well as a fishing pier and water sports. And even the dining maximises on the seaside setting, with the wood-fired pizzas of Il Postino competing for attention with ‘burgers on the beach’ and that obligatory ‘surf-inspired’ Keys menu.

We recently stayed at Isla Bella with our grown children and their young children and we could not be more happy with our experience! The rooms and views were amazing, the multiple pools gave us the opportunity to relax away from the grand children when we wanted - but also the opposite play with them when our kids also needed to relax! The hotel manager, Justin, seemed to be everywhere! He offered my husband and our son a taste of a specialty cocktail to welcome us and gave our grand children a really neat scavenger hunt that kept them busy for hours! Later we saw him skimming the swimming pool and s different time he was cleaning guest rooms! Always so friendly and full of energy! The entire staff all seemed to go out of their way to ensure our vacation was extra special! The restaurants were amazing too! My favorite was sunset pier! We can’t wait to go back!! We may have finally found a permanent location for our annual trip! Read less

We ( husband/wife and 3 teenagers ages 14/17/18) traveled to the Isla Bella the first week in August 2019. This is our 3rd trip to the Florida Keys, we are from Massachusetts. This is a new, clean and beautifully decorated resort however some major flaws will prevent us from staying here again. We had no issues with the staff. We found the staff welcoming and helpful and enjoyed the full eye contact and their smiling faces as they passed us and greeted us for the day. Hats off to the staff! The 5 pools were a bonus! The pools didn't feel crowded and there was always a place to sit. We used the bikes, kayaks, corn hole, volleyball net and bocce ball court and had a great time. So you are wondering where the issue is? To start..the resort has a small area of sandy beach- which is not uncommon for the Keys. However, the resort has chosen to leave the beach area with accumulating seaweed. We are well aware that this has been a common problem plaguing south Florida and understand the amounts are higher than normal at this time. However, the resort has chosen to leave the seaweed rotting on its small beach. The dried, rotting sea weed amount must be 100 feet by 10 feet in size, rotting away in the hot sun- the smell is awful! If you want to enter the ocean you will need to walk through this heap of seaweed. We could have had that seaweed shoveled out, by hand, in about 2 hours so we cant figure out why the resort leaves it for the guests to gag every time they walk by it. If you want to just say 'oh well" to the seaweed and go to the beach bar and enjoy a drink thats great, but expect to pay $14-$16 per drink ( without tip) and the beach bar is located just down wind of the rotting seaweed. So you will basically drop $20 per drink while enjoying the beautiful sites and the lovely smell of rotting seaweed, which smells like rotting fish and eggs. We wanted to participate in the bar activities, putting money into the staff's pocket but it was hard to hold our breath and drop $20 on one drink, so we chose to buy our own alcohol and drink on our room deck. Which leads to the next issue, the open decks off each room. Each room has an outdoor deck and each deck looks out onto the resort and the ocean, very pretty. We were on the second floor. What separates your deck from your neighbors deck is a 3 foot open railing. So as you sit on your deck you have zero privacy. You literally can see into your neighbors room, see what they do on the deck, inhale their smoke ( supposed to be a non smoking hotel), know what they are eating for snacks, listen to their phone conversations etc- there is NO privacy. So if the privacy issue doesn't bother you ( we did get used to it ), maybe the security issue will leave you uneasy as it did us. Each deck is accessed through your slider door. If you dont lock your slider then anyone can have access to your room VERY easily. This is usually a ground level room issue, but any floor you bare on will have this issue.....So we avoided the seaweed by avoiding the bar and dealt with the lack of privacy on the decks and had to take extra time to remember to lock the slider- no biggie, heck ,we can adjust and are hardy. That rotting mound of seaweed is not match for the amount of snow we have shoveled! Right?! ....The biggest issue came when it came time to sleep! PAPER THIN WALLS! The master bedroom shares a wall with the common hallway of the resort. This wall is 1/2 frosted glass! Yep! You may as well not even have walls. We could hear our neighbor urinating at night! We can tolerate many of "oh wells" but when it comes time to sleep and all we can hear is an elevator moving, neighbors defecating, people having regular toned conversations in their rooms that sounded like they were sitting on our bed, and dogs barking that is were we draw the line. We will go back to our chain brand hotel in Marathon, sorry Isla Bella but unless you can fix the paper thin walls we cant come back. Read less

I would like to start by saying that my husband and I were very excited about celebrating our wedding anniversary at Isla Bella Beach Resort. The initial greeting at the entrance gate was warm and welcoming. Check-in went smoothly. Front desk staff member showed us how to get to our oceanfront terrace luxury king room and where all the facilities were located. I asked about the beach at the resort. She showed us where it was on the map of the resort and told us that there were cabanas available on the sandy beach. Our room was spacious and beautifully decorated. Although this is a new resort, there were already signs of a little wear and tear. The bathroom had all the bells and whistles of a luxury hotel. His and Hers sinks, huge bath tub and a separate shower. Only one hook for bath towels. The terrace was large and beautifully appointed. However, you can see and hear your neighbors because they are right next to you. One of our neighbors also used the terrace to dry all of their bathing suits and pool towels. Although it looked like a hot mess, I can’t blame them because there is no place to hang dry anything. There are five swimming pools and now I know why. There is no swimming beach. We were so disappointed! We live in NYC and after spending two days in Miami, we wanted to continue to enjoy beach life. As if this wasn’t disappointing enough, there is a permanent stench coming from the beach. It must be from the stagnant seaweed and water at the “shoreline.” My husband and I spent one day in Key West and drove to Bahia Honda State Park for some more beach time. The whole point of booking at Isla Bella was to have easy access to a swimming beach without having to drive. Our wedding anniversary dinner at the “Italian” restaurant at the resort, Il Postino was also a disappointment. I wrote a separate review regarding this experience. Please take the time to read it. You will find it informative and helpful. On our last day, housekeeping only left bath towels. I had to call and ask for hand towels. They also did not replenish coffee/sugar/creamer supplies. We went to the market one morning hoping for a quick breakfast. It was beautifully appointed, but the food options were minimal and the staff looked like they didn’t want to be there. Although we enjoyed the comfort of our room and the “look” of a luxurious resort, we think that management needs to work on more honest advertising and training their staff. Read less
