The Shore Club

South Beach, Miami

The hotel

Redefining cool on Miami's South Beach, Shore Club combines classic minimalist design with quirky twists. Designed by famed British architect David Chipperfield, the hotel features grey terrazzo floors, white walls and white fabrics accented by flashes of colour such as cone-shaped lampshades in funky colours like emerald green, gold and purple. The ground floor, leading all the way to the beach, is one seamless adult playzone. Under every potted tree and around each column, there's a funky but cosy collection of stools, chairs, couches and tables. The lighting is low, with hundreds of candles; the music is eclectic; and the design is a mix of ethnic styles that contribute to the culture of chilling out.

I had such a great time at my cabana over the weekend and although the weather was cool at this time of year it was still a wonderful stay. I really enjoyed the people who worked there in particular Mary was very helpful and friendly. I recommend doing a day visit if you live in the area.

I do not like to write bad reviews on businesses, but it is important to communicate to fellow travelers about a few facts for this hotel. I just stayed 5 nights at the Shore Club in Miami beach to attend a conference. In general, the hotel is nicely kept up and the lobby area is updated. As for the rooms, they are very dated and need a lot of work. I was very underwhelmed with the room, especially after reading traveler reviews. I have stayed in Best Westerns, Knights Inn and other motel rooms that were nicer and more updated than this hotel. I do not see how this could ever be called a “resort”. The room is very small, which is fine since you are not in Miami Beach to spend time in the room. However, it was very dated, it felt unclean and there were quite of few issues. One of the electrical outlets was broken, and there are few outlets in the room to begin with. The windows are always filled with moisture and/or just permanently stained so you cannot see out of them. The bed felt like it was one of those plastic beds, but on the plus side, the pillows were comfortable. There are no blankets in the room, just sheets on the bed. The air temperature was set to 70 during my entire visit, yet during the day it was warm, muggy and sticky feeling in the room and overnight, it was drastically cooler. To the point where I would have really liked to have had a blanket. The shower and bathroom area just felt very dated and I always had that, “not clean” feeling while in the room. The door leading to the hallway had no bottom seal on the door, so you can see the hallway light throughout the night along with the hallway noise. I did go down to the front desk to voice my concerns of the room and cleanliness and I was told I was going to be put on a “VIP cleaning list”, which I knew was a bunch of crap and it is probably what they say to pacify the guests. I spoke with a front desk attendee around 9 a.m. and as of noon, my room was still not cleaned. So much for the VIP. The pool area is very nice and only one side of the pool only gets the sun past 12:30 or so, so getting a lounger on that side can be tricky. The wait staff and bar staff were very friendly and polite. The beach area is also nice and the staff is just as nice out at the beach area. The overall prices for the hotel are very expensive, as South Beach itself is very expensive. I never ate at Diez y Seis, which is the only restaurant in the hotel, as the hotel does not offer any type of coffee bar, juice bar etc. The only thing I ate at the hotel was avocado toast at $16 for the two pieces of toast, smear of avocado spread and a sprinkling of corn on top. The drinks are just as expensive as they are roughly $15/16 a drink. There is one other smaller pool right next to the main pool which is supposed to be the “calmer” side. You can walk directly out the back gate to the beach and boardwalk which is very nice. You need your room key to get back into the gate so that helps with safety. My biggest complaint overall was that the second to last morning I was there, we had a fire alarm going off around 6:50 a.m. and it was going off for a good 15+ minutes. After speaking with another hotel guest who had personally called local authorities, she proceeded to inform me that there was a carbon monoxide leak. The hotel had evacuated the entire 2nd floor because there was a fire in the kitchen at the restaurant. I was on the 3rd floor and we were not told to evacuate, as we weren’t told anything. I went down to speak with the front desk and inquire as to why we were not told and why the entire hotel was not informed about this carbon monoxide leak. I was told that “it was contained” and they did not want to “concern all the hotel guests”. He then proceeded to tell me that the hotel was “sold out tonight and tomorrow so everything is good.” What is extremely interesting about this, was that morning I woke up feeling awful, with a headache, dizziness and lightheaded. To not inform the entire hotel that there was a carbon monoxide leak at a level of 500 is absolutely absurd and action should have been taken to make sure all guests were informed and doing okay. I am not overall impressed with this hotel and I would not recommend. I unfortunately would not return to this particular hotel as there are plenty of nice hotels in the same area. The customer service was severely lacking at the front desk. Read less

Jean and Chris at the beach front are exemplary in their friendliness and service - the hotel might be falling apart but at least they hire awesome people! They were quick and helpful and had loads of suggestions as to what to do during beach time and after - definitely the high point!

Sadly we booked this in last minute through a sister property and based on reputation. What a terrible disappointment we walked into that came with dead landscaping and a strongly perfumed Lobby with dirty pillows on the furniture. The wear and tear on the carpet as well as the tile along with the stains on the floors in our room further grossed me out. The lighting in the bath was very dim the furniture in the room Spartan as were the amenity offerings. The up charge on the room rate was 200 above average online. We could not change hotels quickly enough the next morning. When I asked the front desk about the up charge I received a vague shrugged explanation. Gladly I left without argument. Just happy to leave. Read less
