Finolhu

Maldives, Indian Ocean

The hotel

The designers had fun when creating Finolhu. A mix of retro-chic design and futuristic touches, like the funnel-shaped bar terrace, it would defy its desert island location if it weren’t for rustic Maldivian throwbacks like thatched roofs. Its entertainment’s anything but ‘typical’ too, especially Baa Baa Beach Club restaurant’s retro pool parties, DJ sessions and cinema screenings. Its other eateries are equally exciting, from the Milk Bar ‘old school tuck shop’ to the rustic yet refined Fish & Crab Shack, set on the sandbar and reached by foot, swimming, or dhoni boat. This fun resort is a great choice for couples and families, and offers many à la carte water experiences — between May and October you can take a trip to see manta rays. Or try glamping Finolhu-style — spend a night in the unique Beach Bubble Tent on a secluded stretch of sand. Chill out, watch the sun set and enjoy a private beach barbecue before spending a night under the stars and watching the sun rise next morning.

Travelled as a couple celebrating my partner’s birthday. Communication: even before our arrival Finolhu staff were clear and responsive to our queries. This continued throughout our stay with their excellent app which made booking activities incredibly easy. They also handled a change in weather and seaplane cancellation with clarity and ease, in what I can only imagine was a logistical nightmare behind the scenes. Location and villa: we enjoyed a lagoon view villa near the end of the boardwalk as our home for the week. Yes the blues really are all those shades of ‘amazing-ness’ . From my point of view there is no wrong choice in any of the rooms. I loved the variety of having a fantastic beach and sandbank on one part and snorkelling at the drop off a few metres from the ocean pool villas. Activities: There is something for everyone in this wonderful resort. Whether it’s white parties at the crab shack or chillaxing by the pool with a nice drink. We chose regular snorkelling trips to see schools of fish, turtles , a moray eel and an octopus along the edge of the drop off and walks on the sandbank and boardwalk . We also enjoyed a wonderful massage at the Cove Spa. The therapist Linyu had a natural sense of touch and adjusted pressure accordingly. My partner enjoyed his massage also. We were also blessed with a chance to see a couple of mantas with Axu on a manta snorkel trip at Hanifaru Bay. Food and beverage package: we booked with Luxury Escapes and enjoyed the all inclusive package. We really enjoyed the themed dining at the main Baa Baa buffet. As other reviews testify, this is more than a buffet they have amazing cooking stations like the Grill often run by Chef Janeeka . The evenings change in theme and a new feast unfold each night. We particularly enjoyed Maldivian night and Italian night. Still dreaming of the Vitello tonnato and beef carpaccio and the amazing mezze from BaaHaa. The option of included dinners at Kanusan , BaaHaa and Fish Shack lunch were also very generous. Staff: but it’s really at the staff that Finolhu shines. The little touches during the week for my partner’s birthday made it a birthday week rather than a day’s celebration. I would particularly like to acknowledge Mauro who showed us around that first day, to our amazing villa home exec Hussain who kept our room tidy despite the regular mess generated . Also want to thank Zameel , Francesco and the ?Russian guy who drove us to the end of the boardwalk when it was to hot to walk. And a special thanks to Anoos and Zain who hide our empty plates and kept us cool with orange juice and ice water. Also thanks to Ranti, Anne, Ali and Xandra maraming salamat! Also thanks to Prakash and Jamal who kept watch in rain and heat probably wondering why we would want to swim out so far. Thank you for having us Marc / Anna! We will see you again. Shukriya!
