Finolhu

Maldives, Indian Ocean

The hotel

The designers had fun when they created Finolhu. A mix of retro-chic design and futuristic touches, it would defy its desert island setting if it weren’t for the rustic Maldivian gestures. Head to the funnel-shaped bar terrace or to Baa Baa Beach Club — enjoy one of the DJ sessions or cinema screenings or time your stay for a retro pool party. Visit the Milk Bar ‘old school tuck shop’ and take a stroll, swim or dhoni boat to the the rustic yet refined Fish & Crab Shack, set out on the sandbar. Among the many water experiences here are cruises to spot dolphins and, between May and October, trips to see manta rays. For something a bit different, try glamping Finolhu-style in the Beach Bubble Tent — chill out, watch the sun set and enjoy a private beach barbecue, before spending a night under the stars and watching the sun rise next morning.

We visited Finolhu in early March 2020 for our 10 year wedding anniversary and it was the most enjoyable and memorable holiday we've had! The Maldives and Finolhu are absolute bliss! The whitest, most soft sand, amazing shades of blue waters, playful dolphins and beautiful sea turtles, luxury over water villas, delicious food and a free flow supply of champagne, cocktails and beers! What more could you ask for! After arriving in Male, we were quickly transferred through to the Seaplane terminal and waited in the private lounge for our ride (drinks and snacks provided). The Seaplane was a great experience in itself and I would definitely recommend! Its only a short ride and the view is fantastic. Upon arriving at the resort you are greeted by the very friendly and helpful staff. After a brief check-in you are taken on a tour of the island by cart and then onto your accommodation. We stayed in an Over Water Pool Villa. It was amazing!!! Clean, modern, spacious and just great. The outdoor space was fantastic for chilling out on the sun lounges/chairs and the pool was a great addition. Direct access to the ocean meant we were continually in and out of the water as it is just so picturesque that you just wanted to keep going back in! Our Villa was not very far down the boardwalk so it was reasonably close to the main part of the island, this was great for us as we found we liked to walk between the main part of the island and our villa - looking in the water at the fish, taking in the view and surroundings & walking off all the food and drink. There are carts going up and down the boardwalk every 15 mins or so so you can get a lift rather than walk if you wish (as some of the villas are quite a way from the main part of the island). We upgraded to the Premium Food and Bev package. This was great as it gave us full access to our minibar in the room (drinks and food) and the bottles of wine etc were replaced daily. Perfect for relaxing back in the villa and watching the sunset in the afternoon with a glass of bubbles. Upgrading the F&B package also meant we could eat at any of the restaurants as much as we liked. We ended up visiting the Crab Shack a few times in our stay but we only ended up having dinner at the Asian and Grill restaurants once each as the food at the main buffet suited us also. The main buffet has themed nights and the Maldivian night was our favourite. The quality of the food is fantastic at all the restaurants! The drinks were great with a large variety and selection. I would definitely recommend upgrading to the premium F&B package, it was definitely worth it! The facilities at the resort can not be faulted. The sun loungers, day beds, pool, bar, the entertainment - all wonderful. We spent many hours lounging by the ocean & pool, drinking champagne, cocktails and beer, swimming in the most amazing waters and then refreshing in the very large pool! It was just perfect. There is daily entertainment, including bands, DJs, and performers. Finolhu was great as it could be a wonderfully relaxing, quiet place if you wanted it to be, or you could make the most of the nightly entertainment and have fun! We picked up our snorkelling equipment on our first day and enjoyed snorkelling around the villa. One afternoon on sunset we had a big stingray come in for a visit! We also used the paddle boards. We also decided to do a Turtle and Dolphin tour and it was unbelievable. This was a morning out on the boat and we were taken to a reef for snorkelling. On the way the crew found the dolphins and it was the most incredible thing, I have never seen so many!! And then we snorkelled and found a few sea turtles. Just amazing and the crew were great!! This was the most amazing holiday. It surpassed our expectations and we can't wait to come back!! Read less

Accommodation: first class, spacious and just wonderful. House keeping are brilliant. Food: every single morsel of food was incredible. Such variety and freshness. We got to try the menu from all the restaurants and nothing disappointed. Service: all the staff are friendly and understand the meaning of true service. We didn’t have to wait long for anything. Resort: one of the best and we have stayed at quite a few across the world. Now I have to mention that we were there when the world went mad with COVID-19 and we felt as though we were a planet away. We were made very welcome even though there were only a few guests left and were guided by the resort management as to when to leave. Anna was just an angel and arranged all our travel home while we sat and slipped on cold rose and ate lunch on the beach. We will be back next year to f8nish off our beautiful holiday. A thousand thank yous Lynn and Michael Ford room 101 & momentarily room 205 :-) Read less

From the moment you arrive at Finolhu, nothing is too much trouble. You're greeted warmly by the team, shown the facilities (water sports, spa, restaurants, activities, pool, bar etc) and invited to check out your room early (if bookings permit). The restaurants are fantastic, service is amazing and whether you're lounging by the pool or at your villa, anything you need is only a phone call away. There's a kids club, daily activities and if you're a family or couple or solo traveller that gets a little bored sitting in the sun all day this is the place for you. We couldn't believe how many activities were put on by the resort. Movie nights, white night, fire twirling, DJ, Casino night - it is truly unbelievable. These are totally optional so if you're looking to meet others or break up the day, go for it! otherwise you're also encouraged to have dinner, swim by your villa, snorkel and relax at your own pace. The best part about Finolhu is the sandbar and crabshack which almost feels like you're on another island that's only a 20 minute walk or 2 minute speedboat away. Couldn't recommend more highly!
