Finolhu

Maldives, Indian Ocean

The hotel

The designers had fun when creating Finolhu. A mix of retro-chic design and futuristic touches, like the funnel-shaped bar terrace, it would defy its desert island location if it weren’t for rustic Maldivian throwbacks like thatched roofs. Its entertainment’s anything but ‘typical’ too, especially Baa Baa Beach Club restaurant’s retro pool parties, DJ sessions and cinema screenings. Its other eateries are equally exciting, from the Milk Bar ‘old school tuck shop’ to the rustic yet refined Fish & Crab Shack, set on the sandbar and reached by foot, swimming, or dhoni boat. This fun resort is a great choice for couples and families, and offers many à la carte water experiences — between May and October you can take a trip to see manta rays. Or try glamping Finolhu-style — spend a night in the unique Beach Bubble Tent on a secluded stretch of sand. Chill out, watch the sun set and enjoy a private beach barbecue before spending a night under the stars and watching the sun rise next morning.

Going to Maldives was first on my bucket list so I've always kept my eye on Luxury Escapes for a deal, and boy did we get one! Full board with drinks and transfers on a seaplane and a speed boat. We are a family of four adults, our kids are 28 and 26. We stayed in an overwater villa and could not fault it. It has three showers, two of which are outdoors. We showered in the private one as it was like a waterfall cascading over you. There is so much room in the villas and plenty of space to sit and read. My favourite was on the day bed out the front of our villa, watching the fish, turtles, manta rays and reef sharks swim by. The villa was serviced twice a day so fresh towels for every shower was a real treat. They also provide beach towels to use after your swim in the ocean (trust me, you are going to love being in there). The buffet would have to be the best I have ever been to. They cook small portions so it is always fresh and the other food is also small bites. I just loved that as it gave us a chance to try many different foods. The wait staff were fabulous and I feel I must give special mention to Nadia who went out of her way to make sure everything was just how it should be. I just loved the way she got things done quietly. She is a gem (Mark you need to keep her!). We had lunch at the fish and crab shack - oh my goodness, it was divine. You need to go with an empty stomach so you can do it justice. We took the boat down as it was too hot to walk. We also had a swim in between courses as the day was very hot. Kanusan was a bit of a disappointment for us but others raved about it. Our meal highlight would have to have been at the Baa Grill where we were seated out on the sand and treated like royalty. We met Mohsen a chef. He came to our table to tell us about the food. What a treat! We could not fault the food or the service. While we were sitting by the pool or the beach we were never without a drink or a cold wash cloth in our hands. The boys are certainly on to it and as soon as they saw us sit down they would be over with water, iced tea and the cold wash cloth. Then "what can I get you to drink?" Our daughter just loved the mojihto's and she sure drank a bucket load of them! There was plenty of quiet space to sit and lay around or you could be right in the middle of it all. We were in rooms 127 and 128 and never had any problems waiting for a buggy. Just ring and they send them down to pick you up. Honestly, I think some people just moan for the sake of it. We also didn't find the noise of them going up and down the boardwalk that bad. You can be as busy as you want to be on the island. They offer something to do every day and advertise it on a board as you go in for breakfast. There were mermaids, jugglers dancing etc to keep you busy. We have travelled extensively and all agree it was the best trip we've ever done. My husband couldn't stop raving about the fish he saw at the drop off just behind the spa centre. Ten of thousands of them, beautiful! Thank you Mark for our wonderful stay at Finolhu. You are blessed to live there and have a wonderful group of people working with you. They are all so friendly and willing. Read less

OK, so the Maldives is super expensive. So after much research I made the dcision to stay here with my family in a 2 bedroom overwater villa. We were NOT disappointed, it was simply amazing!! We paid for full board which included all breakfast, lunches and dinners + all drinks that were on the standard menu. I personally found this too much food and next time I suggest half board which entitles you to 2 free meals + drinks per day. The villa was amazing - could not fault it. Super huge king beds, stunning living area, huge space, with outdoor private massive bath / shower x2 / toilets and double vanities. Ours had a pool which was perfect after jumping directly into the extreme turquoise water!! The villas were private yet HUGE! I suggest you try to get a villa closer to the beginning of the walkway as the ones at the end would have to wait for a buggy every time they wanted to leave the room. We were in Number 3 so it was convenient for us to walk to and from. I could rave on forever about how wonderful this place is but we were so impressed and would not hesitate to come back here. My husband and I were welcomed the second we landed in male from the transfer to the sea plane to the 6 day trip that we had finolhu gave us an experience of a lifetime. Gorgeous rooms that were exceptionally beautiful and clean, staff that one can only dream of - we actually left with a bunch of friends - from knowing what drink we want to what we want to eat and even the music we like - the staff knew it all by the end of it. I can not recommend finolhu enough, it was by far the best holiday and the best experience we’ve had. Yes Maldives is beautiful but finolhu makes it magical. Great work and kudos to the team. Thank you for our room boy Ahusan to clean the room for us everyday and sometime twice a day :D He often come in the evening to see if we need anything else such as towel. We stayed at ocean view villa and there were lots of fishes underneath. We can jump to the ocean directly in our villa and there were lifeguards around so it is safe. The island had lots of places to go for scuba diving, they went to 3 different places to dive. We saw dolphins, turtles, shark etc. Thanks two of the awesome diving instructors: Sammy and his collegue. There are different functions/ events every day, such as volleyball matches, movie night, face painting, magic show. Read less
