On top of all of this the staff and service was stellar. They were so friendly and looking to make sure you had a blast. For the birthday trip they took the time to deck our room out with a cake, artwork out of tree leaves/flowers/ towels and they even took us to a secluded area with an eclogues saying happy birthday while they beat on a drum and sang us happy birthday! One night my companion didn’t feel well and without even mentioning it to anyone we immediately got a call to the room to check in and offer a medical staff to support. I can’t give these folks enough praise. Read less

We had the most amazing massages in the spa.... so good we went twice. We will definitely go back and recommend to others. It would be nice to see more encouragement of staff and guests to help with removing so if the plastic in the sea, if they see it and it’s possible to collect it safely. Read less

Thank you Shizan for making this holiday so special to me. Read less

I was so worried about this hotel being second best as we had originally booked a twin centre holiday to Sri Lanka and then onto the Oblu Select at Sangeli, but obviously due to the awful bombings we found out a week before our trip that the Sri Lanka part of the holiday was a no go. As the Sangeli was full for the time we should have been in Sri Lanka our travel agent offered us alternatives in Dubai or Singapore, neither of which my hubby was too keen on, hence our trip to Helengeli. We had a deluxe lagoon villa with plunge pool which was amazing, the facilities were incredible with everything so well thought out. The room had life jackets, umbrellas, rain macs, a rechargeable torch, good toiletries, flip flops and beach bag, plug in mosquito deterrent and a can of bug spray. The island is quite small and intimate with sand pathways through gorgeous vegetation and flowers which are so well cared for. The bars and restaurants all have sand floors hence most people go barefoot or in flip flops. The place isn’t pretentious and people tended not to dress up too much for dinner which gives the whole place a chilled out and relaxed atmosphere. We paid $35 each for a BBQ which included lobster and giant prawns, the service and whole atmosphere was amazing. All meals in the buffet restaurant were good with plenty of choice. The best part of this leg of our holiday however was the staff, all of whom were so friendly and genuinely cared about your welfare, everyone wished you good morning or spoke when they passed you and had lovely smiles. The manager did daily rounds speaking to all guests and really cared about delivering the best holiday for everyone. She is an absolute credit to the organisation as are her staff. We are now at Sangeli which is so different and I will review later but would we return to Helengeli? Absolutely YES. Read less

We spent 9 nights at Helengeli in March. Originally we had considered a different resort, but on the recommendation of our travel agent, we chose OBLU, mainly because of the house reef. I then spent 10 months reading all of the excellent reviews and looking forward to our holiday. We flew direct with BA, which was a good choice, despite the aircraft being fairly old. It was half empty and overall a good flight. It was very easy to see the OBLU representative in arrivals, and we were asked to wait for some 30 - 45mins for other passengers. Be warned, it’s very warm in the airport, and a cold bottle of water is a must. After a speedy transfer to Helengeli, we were warmly welcomed by the hotel staff and allocated our room. Having booked a deluxe villa, we were offered an upgrade to a Lagoon villa with plunge pool. Whilst the room was lovely, and very nice to have our own pool, in hindsight, I wish we’d have kept the deluxe villa as you can’t walk from the steps of the lagoon villa to a beach. However, the room itself was spacious, clean and had everything that we needed. (Although to be fair a full mini bar, such as they have in Sangeli would be great). We spent each day near to the main pool - closer to the bar, snorkelling and fantastic beach. My only comment here would be that some of the Loungers could be a bit more comfy. As I’m sure most of you have read the snorkelling here is some of the best in the Maldives. My husband is PADI qualified and did a couple of dives. But he said the snorkelling was so good, he was quite happy not to dive should we visit again.. For anyone who’s nervous about snorkelling, my advice would be to use a full face snorkel mask. You can buy from the shop on the island, or bring one with you (probably cheaper). The food for me was a bit hit and miss. There was plenty of choice, but for some reason some of the meat was a bit over cooked. However, I never went hungry. The bar staff were all great. It does get warm in the evenings in the bar, and this is where the relaxed dress code is really most welcome. Having previously worked in the travel and hospitality industry, I am a frequent traveller, having visited many different countries, both as a guest and whilst working. Without doubt, the relaxed, informal atmosphere of Helengeli, coupled with the outstanding service offered by all of the staff has left a lasting impression on us. So much so that we’ve already booked to return next March where I’m sure our holiday will be just as good and memorable. Read less
