Sun Island Resort & Spa

Maldives, Indian Ocean

The hotel

The largest resort in the Maldives, Sun Island Resort and Spa really does have something for everyone. If your ultimate dream is to experience the stunning surroundings and get close to the colours of the natural world beneath the ocean, you can scuba dive, snorkel, or sail a catamaran in the pure blue water, or if you prefer to catch up on some of that much needed rest and recuperation, perhaps some gentle fishing could be for you. On the other hand, if you feel your days are better spent horizontally you can take advantage of an aromatherapy treatment and massage, or simply sunbathe in a secluded cove with absolutely no sign of anyone, anywhere. This is just some of the advantages of this picturesque island in South Ari Atoll. Review of Sun Island Resort and Spa Reviewed yesterday We stayed in a Water Bungalow on Sun Island from 28th February 2020 to 12th March 2020. The water bungalows I think need updating a little bit. The bathrooms would benefit from a walk in shower instead of an over the bath shower as there are some people with disabilities who will struggle to lift their leg over the bath. This island is paradise on earth, the water is so clear and blue with powder white sand. We hired bikes for the duration of our holiday and I must say you will need them if you are staying in the water villas because the distance from them to the beach over the far side by the coffee bar is quite a distance. The food in the restaurant was ok, it could have been hotter as it was always just warm. The staff more than made up for food though, they couldn’t do enough for you especially our lovely restaurant supervisor Zakir who went above and beyond to look after us, we have made a friend for life with him. Doouna greeted us every day with a cheery smile and chat. The fresh cooked food from the omelette station of a morning to the fish, meat and pasta station of an evening were staffed by the hard working Sheham, Brighton, Raja and Kisshna. I wish all the guests would tip the staff as a way of thanking them for their hard work and treat them with respect as I never seen anyone tip and I witnessed some guests speaking to the staff disrespectfully. I think the Golf bar should be used for the water bungalows as part of the all inclusive package, as it was always empty because it’s not part of the all inclusive packages you have to pay for drinks there. The other bars are quite a distance from the water bungalows and having the golf bar as part of the all inclusive package would be ideal as it’s so close to the water bungalows. There also needs to be more male and female toilets instead of just one of each around the island. We stayed here from 18th Feb till 3rd March. Was truly amazing from start to finish! We stayed in a sun villa which was lovely and cleaned twice a day. Roman was our cleaner who was lovely! Made sure we knew that if there was anything he could help with then he’d be happy to help. We went half board which we felt was enough as not all drinks that we drink were included in the all inclusive. Now food was gorgeous lots of variety. I am a very picky eater but there was never a day where I struggled to eat something. Our waiter was Mihad who was very friendly and always had a smile on his face. The staff is what made this holiday as fab as it was! Starting with Suresh. What a lovely man he is. Always smiling always stopping and asking how our day has been making sure we have drinks and generally getting to know us which was lovely. Also another one is the waiter Arun, he was so lovely! Another one that always walked around with a smile on his face we had some lovely chats with him got to know him a lot and we would always have a good laugh! Always went above and beyond at getting us drinks we would have at home. Around the pool area was always clean we spent a lot of time at the pool bar were we served by Shalika who again was so friendly. Making sure our glass was always filled and again asking us questions about life at home! We went on a few different excursions one being the big game adventure one which I would highly recommend to anyone coming here. We were told it was a 50% chance we would see anything but we managed to see the whale shark, manta rays, turtles and even got to see dolphins. Massive shout out to Mohammed who was our instructor and he helped me along the way and made sure I was alright. Pavan had also served us at the main bar and he again always greeted us with a smile when we saw us asked us how our day was and just another lovely man. Unfortunately didn’t get the names of some of the others but they all played a part in making our holiday great! Lastly the entertainment was always brilliant. Had a variety of different things each night Rex & Nice dance routine was outstanding brilliant dancers! And lastly dj belz definitely knows his music! The pool partys were class loved the music on them aswell. Thanks again sun island! Would recommend to anyone and will see yous next year! Read less

I recommend you to pack your scuba-diving masks to explore the waters. There are also a few party's you can join free on the shore of the sea with lights, drinks, dancers. (at night) In the morning there are also yoga classes you can join. Half board is the best option, so you have the chance to chose your third meal to be eaten in one of the 5 restaurants. Read less

It's been several months since we've booked a superior beach bungalow here for our honeymoon. I've read a lot about how they care about guests' comfort and so on. Then the coronavirus crisis started and many countries (including Ukraine) stopped all air routes. There were sick people in the Maldives too. It's obvious for any person in the world that nobody has predicted coronavirus crisis to happen. It's a force majeur. But it's not obvious for the Sun Island Resort who don't care much about that. Is it impossible to get to the Maldives? We don't care. We also don't care that you guys have spent your 10 salaries to go to our hotel. What is more fascinating - the hotel "is ready to effect a compromise" - to move the dates. Now look at it: we specifically chose the date to right after our wedding procedure, we took vacations on our jobs and now the hotel offers us an opportunity to move the dates to August-October. Not enough? OK, they say, "You will be lucky if you don't pay more, so better do it now". So they offer me to exchange my high season (with great weather) on the island to a low season (with bad weather) which costs LESS and they tell me that I may need to pay more. LOL, guys! The whole world is closing its border and you don't care about it? Just for your information: we paid arounf $5k for this trip and now the same trip costs almost twice less because people can't just get on the Island. We are deeply shocked by this situation. We spent around a week to choose this resort among others and now this hotel (which "wants to make your stay here an amazing experience) just tells you to forget about your money. Read less

We stayed in Sun Island Resort from 6th of March 2020 until 14th of March. When we arrived at the island we fell in love with the blue ocean, white sands and lushly green vegetation. The island isn’t as small as you would expect from the Maldives. We were kindly welcomed by the hotel staff. We stayed at a Superior beach bungalow 314 and highly recommend it, because in our opinion it is one of the best on the island and the ocean is right at your doorstep. Simply amazing! The interior of the bungalow is really well maintained and very clean, but to be honest it needs a little updating although it has that “island interior style” that we were looking for. It is very spacious and the bed is comfortable. In the bathroom you have a tub inside and you also have an private outside shower which is great, taking a bath under the moonlight or the bright sunshine. The bathroom is also very spacious. To be honest you probably won’t spend much time in your bungalow, because you have an amazing and beautiful island to explore. One of the everyday events on the island is the manta rey feeding, our bungalow was located very close to the water villas and the place where they feed them, which is everyday around 18:30. They are very beautiful and interesting animals. There is an option to rent a bike so that you can move more quickly around the island and explore it (it’s around $3 a day for old bike and $6 for a new one) the difference isn’t very big, both do great job. The island is very clean and well organized. They do really good job in keeping everything natural and environmentally friendly which is really nice. There are three restaurants other than the main restaurant. Thai,Italian and Zero restaurant which is located in something like a jungle. We visited them all and our favorite was the Zero restaurant. They had amazing non-alcoholic drinks made from fruits that are grown in a garden next to the restaurant. Actually i think everything is grown there and 100% natural. We highly recommend visiting at least one of the restaurants, because they are really good and all the staff was very polite and friendly. Everybody that are working on the island always smile and are very polite and kind which makes you feel welcomed. I think this is very important for a hotel to be successful. We were on HB so we had breakfast and dinner, which I recommend if you want to try the restaurants. You can change your dinner included in your half board package for lunch and visit the restaurants for dinner. There were a lot of options in the main restaurant, so everyday there is something you can find that fits your taste. We had 2L of water for free everyday in the bungalow, and also free water in the restaurant so this was enough for us. We visited a lot of places around the world, but the Maldives definitely are one of the best and Sun Island Resort is a very good choice at a reasonable price. The beach, the warm ocean, the beautiful sands, everything was amazing. Another interesting thing is the indian flying foxes that live on the island. While riding our bikes, we found a tree where there were around 50 of them. They fly around the island often, but pose no danger at all, actually they are cute animals. An amazing place with beautiful nature, nice people and unforgettable experience. We will be back for sure! Read less
