We spent 10 days at Belle Mare Plage in early March 2020 being our third stay there as a golfing couple in the last six years. Since the previous stay the resort had undergone a makeover. The bar and Deer Hunter restaurant changes were excellent coupled with a refresh of the villas and rooms. The evening entertainment at the refurbished bar seemed much better than before also. We took advantage of the all inclusive package. The food choices are amazing and staff are very efficient, courteous and friendly. A special mention for the greenstaff, after heavy rain, for returning two very soggy courses back to playable and manicured in a short space of time. Also Jean and colleagues behind the bar were excellent in their attention and efficiency. By 16 March coronavirus had appeared on the island resulting in certain restrictions, temp checks etc. By Weds 18th, the hotel was down to 20% capacity. Throughout this, the management and staff kept us fully informed and were able to maintain their usual high standard of service. Hand sanitiser everywhere and at the Authorities’ request, they were taking temperatures at breakfast. Still, the staff were courteous and helpful, despite the fact that they knew this heavenly place was due to close for a period. In spite of this it was a wonderful 10 days and we hope to visit again in 2022. Other Trip Advisor reviewers purported to have stayed at BMP at the same time as us. It’s hard to believe that they were in the same place as we do not recognise their criticism of the place, staff or food. Read less

We were upgraded to a junior suite - in reality a decent sized room with a large balcony with comfy soft seating. However, it rained most of the time we were there, and the hotel is woefully unprepared for bad weather. The thatched roof over the balcony let in the rain and the seating was constantly soaking wet and unusable. So, in effect, no balcony. Similarly the main restaurant had large areas which had to be closed off because the rain got in. Now, the weather is not the resort's fault, but rain is not unknown in Mauritius, and I would expect a 5 star resort to be built to allow for it. We had booked half board so ate at the Citronelle Buffet restaurant. As a vegetarian, I found the food very disappointing. The selection of Indian food was delicious with lots of vegetarian options, but apart from that it was diy pasta or nothing. One day a week was a wellness evening where there were a few starter salads which were vegetarian or vegan. Every other evening the starter salads all contained meat or fish. There was never a vegetarian main course the time we were there. This was surprising, as there was always a vast selection of different meat main courses as well as a small amount of fish. Surely, one vegetarian main course each evening wouldn't have been too much of a stretch for a 5 Star hotel? The one saving grace was the deserts. The Citronelle has a seriously good pastry chef and the puddings never disappointed. Breakfast (also in the Citronelle) was very varied and good. We ate one evening in La Spiagga, one of the resort's a la carte restaurants. The meal was very good although the service was extremely slow and it was nose bleedingly expensive. The staff at the resort were generally friendly and courteous although occasionally either inattentive (the staff in the bar had a habit of completely ignoring guests ) or over attentive (topping up wine in the Citronelle after every sip). All in all, it was OK, but nothing more. Read less

Just before the terror and panic of the Covid-19 virus we decided to still go to Mauritius to go pick up our PR cards and then relax a few days as there was still no sign of the disease in Mauritius when we left. (14-21 March) South Africa also had only 16 cases at that stage. (However , during this week period we did experience our first cyclone II and shutdown of Mauritius from the 19th. ) Paying slightly less than what we would have paid at Lux Grande Gaube we decided to try Constance Belle Mare Plage as our trip was also for business purposes. Our welcome was to say the least .... shocking. Nina was definitely not very friendly and my husband and I was quite taken aback by the offish mannerism in which this 5 star hotel welcomed us. It felt as if we walked in at the wrong hotel. We sat and waited for what felt like 45 minutes for them to finilise our details on the computer whilst we received a quarter glass of something that looked like a daiquiri welcoming drink each. It was all done just wrong. The cold facecloth, the welcome, the wishy washy cocktail... it was all there but not with conviction and a drop of the normal Mauritian hospitality. Our beachfront prestige room was okay. Newly renovated. Looking fresh but nothing to write home about and we realized immediately that the space was a bit small for us. We decided to give the space issue the benefit of our doubt and to try it our for the 7 nights. Wink wink. Disaster struck when we went to supper that evening. In my whole entire life of nearly half a century have I ever experienced such a bad salad bar or buffet selection at La Citronelle restaurant. The salads were already mixed and the freshness and variety was shocking. When you arrive they ask you if you have allergies and my husband and I are both acutely allergic to ALL seafood and fish. Why they even ask you this question still remains a puzzle. Please be aware that the food was hardly labeled and I would say that 60-70 percent of the dishes had some kind of seafood ingredient mixed in it, be it oyster or fish sauce or just plain anchovies!!! One tong was also shared for various dishes so somebody could have taken salmon and I would have been non the wiser. We struggled to get something to eat as pasta ( carb loading) was most definitely not on our agenda for the week away from home. I need to stress that the struggle to find something nice to eat continued the entire 7 nights. My rating is about 2/10 and that is no exaggeration. The food presentation was sloppy and very disappointing. The individual food section staff was not interactive and did not engage with the guests. Visually the buffet section was a miserable fail and did we eat just to satisfy our hunger pains. Back in the room we were welcomed by hundreds of ants everywhere. Allegedly doom is all it takes to sort out these mighty creatures and amazed we kept our mouths shut. The moldy Aircon air kept me up nearly the entire evening. I had to revert to celestamine and my asthma pump as I am extremely allergic to mold and it’s vivacious fungi friends. The next morning we asked to be moved and they obliged by moving us five rooms down in the same block by 14H00 that day. I was not going to attempt another sleepless night so we decided to upgrade ourselves to ensure a different room on the other side of the hotel complex. We were also hoping for some space to move in without knocking into each other and the cupboard doors. The junior suite offered much more space and a walk-in cupboard which became another nightmare as it had ants and small small white spider like thingies. Once again doom was used with no concern to the fact that that my freshly washed clothes were already neatly packed on the shelves and in the drawers. In the mornings after returning from breakfast you could smell a heavy doom aroma wafting from the rooms in the 500-517 block. Can you imagine. Terrible. Breakfast was also shocking. The variety was small and nothing really looked appetizing. Not one thing was done with love and care and the service was shocking. The staff mostly struggled to speak English. It’s the first time that I have experienced that at any hotel in Mauritius. We have been a total of 12 times at Le Touesrok / Shangri-la and twice at Lux Grande Gaube. Those two hotels are well deserving of their five stars for excellent food varieties, service and amenities. Never ever have we received such terrible service and disinterested staff as at Constance Belle Mare Plage. The staff seemed to gather in nuggets of 3-4 and were really not spunky and service orientated. At times It looked like they did you a favour if you asked them for even a simple thing like salt. They did not even greet you when you walked past them. It was really a miserable hotel. Even the front of hotel staff didn’t meet our expectations. They would listen to you and continue in French to another staff member and you would be left hanging with not a clue of what was happening next. In general I will concede that the hotel has lovely areas and vast buildings with beautiful facilities. The Bar area was awesome and Jean made our last day very happy with his on the ball attitude and superb service. ( a very very rare find indeed) Blu restaurant for lunch was enjoyable but then again nothing out of the ordinary. Paying R400 for a Greek salad with no olives was and will always be insane. The hotel is NOT 5 star. The rooms were updated but cheaply so. The hotel’s feel is that of a money hungry institution. They will never see me or my family again. Dont make the mistake... Lux Grande Gaube offers you much much much more for your money. Note: We do not expect any hotel to be able to meet everybody’s expectations .. however if you start reading the same complaint over and over and over again I think it’s high time management start opening their eyes and changing a few things..... starting off with their feeding trough.
