LUX* Belle Mare & Villas

Mauritius, Indian Ocean

The hotel

After a makeover by London designer Kelly Hoppen, this hotel is the epitome of cool, occupying a dream location overlooking a pristine stretch of beach washed by sparkling azure waters. It’s also home to one of the island’s largest swimming pools, take a dip or treat yourself to a fresh, low-fat ice cream packed with island fruits from the 'ici' vendors. You'll also find some quirky LUX* touches, such as their own blend of coffee roasted on site, a pop-up restaurant and the beach cinema. LUX* Belle Mare offers a range of suites & private villas to tempt you, all beautifully designed. Upgrade to a Pool View Junior Suite overlooking the swimming pool or to a Romantic Junior Suite for a quieter location. For a really special occasion, the Honeymoon Suite is nothing short of sublime or if you’re travelling with the children the Family Suites are very spacious. It’s the little touches here that make all the difference, a British red phone box, for example, a novel way to call home! Exciting amenities include an impressive list of water sports with probably something new to try every day of your holiday. As for restaurants, you’ve several to choose from. MIXE specialises in worldwide cuisine, whilst at Amari by Vineet, you can enjoy Indian delights fit for a maharajah.

This is my second time at Lux Belle Mare, and I can honestly say that it remains my favorite hotel of all time. Not only because of its beautiful scenery, delicious food, and luxurious amenities; but because it feels like a home away from home. The staff are exceptional. My mother (Celeste de Meillon), grandma, and myself were all accommodated to our specific requirements and were very well informed and looked after at all times! Most of the staff members knew us by name, after only a couple of days of settling. From remembering my mom's favorite drink to showing true and sincere interest in us as well as our well-being and comfortable stay, not once did we feel like strangers. We learned to know so many people who were kind enough to take the time and converse with us, which left it feeling like we were leaving family behind at the end of our trip. I would like to mention a couple of names of people that make this trip truly phenomenal: * Ravin, Pravesh, Rikesh, Vishal, Harim, Delores, Rekha, Ashish, Sylvio, Pravesh Neerahee (amazing waiter at the K-Bar!) Salem, the lifeguard (Uncle Sam). Regardless of their positioning at the time, they always presented themselves as fully present and sincerely adherent. Although we traveled during strict times with the COVID-19 Pandemic, we had absolutely no problem receiving the antigen test upon arrival as well as the departing tests required. This was organized entirely by the hotel and we did not even need to leave the premises or spend too much time following these procedures. NOTE: We are all fully vaccinated. On the topic of COVID, for those of you who are weary to travel during these times, I can assure you that the hotel is very on point with necessary health regulations to ensure the safety of its visitors, all while accommodating to the warmth that we have all greatly missed throughout the pandemic. The service, from reception all the way to room service is commendable. Each person takes clear pride in their work and passion for the services that they provide. For example, we often came back from breakfast to find beautiful artworks made from local flowers on our bed. I feel it is also important to note that, out of our traveling group of three, two of us were disabled at the time. My grandmother, who is elderly, struggled to walk the distance from the rooms to the restaurant, and I had a broken knee. The hotel staff were prompt in organizing our rooms closer to the amenities so that we would not struggle. We are so grateful for this extra effort and compassion. My mother, Celeste de Meillon has also been to the hotel numerous times and many of the staff members remembered her, by name! Even after a six-year gap since her last visit. The beach is incredible, with available service buttons at every umbrella as well as provided towels. There is plenty of space to enjoy the sand, swimming, and water. Along with the most incredible sunrises and sunsets that you will ever experience on the coast. The pools are large, comfortable and parents can find ease in knowing that their children are safe due to lifeguards always being present. (I see you Uncle Sam!) We had food and drinks at the K-Bar, Duck Laundry, as well as the buffet restaurant. All had incredible food, service, and atmosphere. It is worthy to note that an all-inclusive package allows for a more relaxed experience when it comes to these menus (and is well worth it!). The entertainment at night is top-notch, with plenty of local talent! I would recommend you bring your dancing shoes. The spa is beautiful, offering a various list of services to meet your every need. Lastly, I would highly recommend the independent sellers on the beach. They all have permits and are extremely friendly. I would like to note three in particular: * Belinda (Scenic boat trips), Robin (Water Sport), and lastly Fernando (he has the most beautiful handmade jewelry). All are extremely friendly and have been there for years! I would just like to thank everybody once again for the wonderful experience! I hope many more can experience what we did as a family of all ages. Your people, hotel and country are all beautiful! Read less

Outstanding service from all staff and they all went over and beyond to make our stay incredible. The sheer attentiveness of the staff is highly commendable. We have previously stayed at Lux South Ari Atol in Maldives and were not disappointed and for that reason we booked this trip and once again, Lux did not disappoint. The hotel have done an outstanding job on making your stay as personalized as possible. All staff are always willing to go above and beyond to help you and do it with a smile! The food is amazing at this resort, so many varieties and wow the desserts and pastries on a daily basis are crazy! All the chefs are doing a fantastic job! I would like to say a special thanks to the following people who went out of there way to make us feel special on our holiday. I’m sorry if i’ve missed your name, but you all know who you are! Sylvio & Elvis are fantastic managers and made an effort to see us on a daily basis to ensure we had everything we needed. You guys are amazing! Ravin - you are fantastic! Everything you did for us, will never be forgotten. Luxmi, Wardah, Jennifer, Anesh, William, Satish, Chica, Vijaye, Goppee, thank you for making our stay memorable. Vinesh for his amazing service at our private dinner. Sanjiv at the K Bar - absolutely fantastic!!! Gerald & Jeff at the water sports - always a pleasure! Lastly, the entertaining boys at Lux Cafe - Bilal, Yashvir, Sudhir & Salim - your coffees are fantastic & we won’t forget the wonderful designs you created on every coffee. We spent time in a suite and a villa and both were amazing. Suren the butler and the other villa staff were really friendly and helpful. Vicky, Nitin and Vinns the bartenders kept us topped up with incredible cocktails and lots of entertainment! The cocktails were some of the best we’ve ever had! Bilal made us the most amazing coffees every day at lux cafe! And finally Jennifer organised lots of amazing experiences for us like a private dinner on the lake, and a beach aperitif to watch the sun go down with a drink over the idyllic beach! It was the dream holiday and we would go back without hesitation! Read less

That we had returned for the sixth year in a row bar one (2020) is testament to our esteem of Lux Belle Mare – and it was just as amazing as we remembered. First off, we were relieved to find Lux, and all of Mauritius, had one of the world’s best pandemic responses: Safety protocols upheld, masks worn, staff vaccinated and tested weekly. We knew we were in good hands. Because we felt safe, we could relax and enjoy the resort. And did we enjoy! Set on a stunning beach overlooking crystal clear turquoise waters, Lux is nothing short of paradise – and in more ways than one. For Foodies like me, Lux’s range and quality of cuisines are second to none, making it a gourmet’s dream come true. Breakfasts on this visit were served at Beach Rouge, to be enjoyed with the glorious vista of a pristine beach and azure sea before us. Vik, Dolores, Chica, Poonam, Priya, Joyce – the top(o) breakfast team – would start my day on a high note with smiles and a cheery Ki Maniere! While breakfast was mainly an a’la carte English/Continental affair, Lux remembered my love for Asian breakfasts so Chef Sundeep of Michelin-starred Amari and Chef Purran were on hand to create the most delicious bespoke masala dhosas, uttapams, paus, poha, pratas, and puris. And if that wasn’t enough, Chefs Ravi and his team (Marie-Ange, Neetu to name a few) also offered delicious Chinese-style fried noodles and pad Thais on request. This year, Amit, whose can-do attitude meant no request was too difficult, took it upon himself to concoct a new smoothie for me every morning – what a budding mixologist! Along with Rati, Jordie, Ashveena and my personal masala chaiwallas Jean Paul and Chica, I was truly spoiled. Dinners were always exquisitely prepared. This year, we chose to celebrate both a birthday and a wedding anniversary at Amari by Vineet, in our view one of the best Indian restaurants in the world. In the hands of Chefs Subi, Sundeep, Ravi, Kunal and Sorgen, every dish was heavenly. The Amari signature black-spiced chicken was just as tantalising as we remembered, while new additions to the menu lamb galouti, orange chicken and a tofu spinach lasagne took already high standards to a new culinary stratosphere – we were privileged to be guinea pigs. Attentive service by front of house Roupesh, Vishal, Ravi and Kunal made every meal an occasion to remember. For a different kind of spice, Duck Laundry, Lux’s Chinese restaurant offered not just a taste of Szechuan but a tour of China. Their 3D menu of Dimsum, Dan Dan noodles and Duck is mouth-wateringly authentic. Their Peking duck with pancake is probably one of the best in the Indian Ocean. Beelur, Kishan and Shaad’s professional and friendly service meant we were well looked after. Beach Rouge, normally offering Mediterranean cuisine and grills, was a cool and chic setting for laidback bbq and theatre dinners. It even has its own G&T club! For couples and honeymooners, many a romantic evening was to be had here – especially when the canopy was rolled back to reveal a full moon backlit by millions of stars, with the swish of palm in the night breeze and the sound of gentle waves accompanying a trio of musicians led by violinist Yves. Nothing was left to chance (not even the choice of mood lighting) under the watchful eyes of Kris, Harrish and Oumesh. With the food came the best wine pairings, by expert sommeliers Amar and Adesh. This year, the wine cellar La Cave has been extended to include private dining for the more discerning palates. At Mari Kontan, we had a lot of fun learning the art of cocktail making with Vinns and Oliver while Wijaye at KBar, always available for a chat, is practically an old friend, as are the star baristas – and my personal Creole teachers - at Café Lux Billal, Yasveer, Sudir and Saleem. Our thanks and well done to the entire F&B team headed by Ramesh and Ravin. Our spacious junior suite for two weeks was always kept immaculate and comfortable, thanks to a fastidious housekeeping team Reshma, Vinal and Hurrish – and ultimately under the direction of Oumesh. Not just careful sanitising but beautiful bed art every day was the kind of personalised service we have come to appreciate at Lux. Watersports was our favourite activity at Lux. Gerald and his team at the boat house – Wesley, Dylan, Kevin, Geraldo, Jenovan and Bertie – ensured we had the equipment and attention we needed, right down to lessons and rescue when necessary. Thanks to them, we had a lot of fun every day on the windsurfer, kayak, stand-up paddle board, waterskis and catamaran. Satish the lifeguard kept a watchful eye when I went swimming. To unwind, we had the option of chilling out at the beach – where the Avinesh and Prakesh kept our fill of ice lollies and drinks – or by the gazebo with a beautiful koi pond or gym where we had personalised stretching sessions with Brandon and Jean-Pierre or yoga/taichi with Sudesh and Joe respectively. The tea ceremony with Veronika in the zen of the teahouse was immediately calming, a great prelude in my opinion for the ultimate unwind: A session at the Lux spa managed by Asha and Fabrice. In the magic hands of masseuses Priti and Anusha, I had Balinese massages that left me languid and relaxed. At the front desk, Hema and Sueena saw to our every request while concierge stalwart Gopee kindly arranged our transfers and transport requirements even before we asked. The management team Silvio, Sheila and Jennifer were always on hand to ensure our needs were met and improved upon. Our thanks too to those behind the scenes – gardeners, cleaners etc – who work hard to keep the resort looking immaculate. In an industry emerging after 18 months of closure, Lux demonstrates why it is a world-class establishment: Not only are members of staff true professionals at what they do, they do it with excellence and passion, gentleness and grace. Lux may have had to close for a while, but they have not lost the special touch that is uniquely theirs. As ever, we are left humbled and touched by the generosity and hospitality of Mauritians which we will miss until we return. Read less
