LUX* Belle Mare & Villas

Mauritius, Indian Ocean

The hotel

After a makeover by London designer Kelly Hoppen, this hotel is the epitome of cool, occupying a dream location overlooking a pristine stretch of beach washed by sparkling azure waters. It’s also home to one of the island’s largest swimming pools, take a dip or treat yourself to a fresh, low-fat ice cream packed with island fruits from the 'ici' vendors. You'll also find some quirky LUX* touches, such as their own blend of coffee roasted on site, a pop-up restaurant and the beach cinema. LUX* Belle Mare offers a range of suites & private villas to tempt you, all beautifully designed. Upgrade to a Pool View Junior Suite overlooking the swimming pool or to a Romantic Junior Suite for a quieter location. For a really special occasion, the Honeymoon Suite is nothing short of sublime or if you’re travelling with the children the Family Suites are very spacious. It’s the little touches here that make all the difference, a British red phone box, for example, a novel way to call home! Exciting amenities include an impressive list of water sports with probably something new to try every day of your holiday. As for restaurants, you’ve several to choose from. MIXE specialises in worldwide cuisine, whilst at Amari by Vineet, you can enjoy Indian delights fit for a maharajah.

We stayed for a week at this resort as a first stop on our three week holiday on Mauritius travelling with a 15-month old toddler. We couldn’t have had a better welcome to this lovely island. Despite being nearly fully-booked with a mix of couples, honeymooners and other families travelling with toddlers we found the hotel rather quiet and very peaceful. The gardens are lush and well taken care of, and there are little cute hide-always with something nice to do, like swings, hammock, telephone booths, tea room and a spa — you cannot get bored with plenty of other complimentary activities on the sea. The beach is beautiful and also taken care of by the staff. It has a big patch of shallow water perfect for cooling down or just have the toddlers play around without a worry. There’s also a big adults/couples-only section on the beach. The food is fantastic, although we are generally not big fans of buffets we found ourselves here every evening enjoying all the wonderful homemade food and delicious desserts/ice creams — you will need to consider putting your diet on a hold at this resort! The restaurant staff at the Mixe buffet restaurant are busy but attentive and ready to help with any request. Even the chefs take rounds at the buffet area to make sure food is OK and to present the food. The hotel also has a great sustainability program to preserve the food in various ways. We chose half-board on this holiday and had lunch at the different a la carte restaurants which suited us well. As our days varied a bit depending on the little ones sleep, we could always ask for a bit of food for her and chose to eat or not as we pleased; we liked that flexibility. Compared to our other experiences at the other restaurants the staff attentiveness of ‘K Bar’ was a bit poor at times. All in all we had a great stay and would be happy to come back, either as a couple or an another family holiday. With the risk of misspelling any names we’d like to thank all those lovely staff members who took their time and made sure we were happy at all times, as Vick says ‘happy baby, happy parents’! First of I’ll try to be balanced as I discussed most concerns with management and all problems were resolved quickly when they happened so I won’t harp on! Lux Group has such strong marketing it set very high expectations for me which weren’t entirely met. Belle Mare Plage is not an Oberoi or One&Only or Four Seasons so whilst a 5 star it’s not in their league (nor should I add do they charge their premium prices). What was good... The food and beverage in all restaurants is really excellent. We were on the AIP which definitely seemed worth it and gives peace of mind for that cheeky sundowner or ice cream etc. Beach Rouge has a great vibe and the best gazpacho of anywhere in the world! The beach has wonderful sand, gently sloping sea leading out to the coral reef. There are sheltered spots to avoid the breeze if you want to. Beach service was pretty good despite so few staff there (we were told it was 1 guy covering the job of 3). The “cycle to market” tour to Flacq was well organised and felt very safe (thanks Jordy). Worth doing for a half day. The WhatsApp concierge style service was handy saving a load of phone calls and because the WiFi is so good means easy messaging from the beach to organise stuff. The suites are all a really good size for 2 or 3 people... furnishings of good quality and huge comfortable beds/air con. Courtesy rooms are handy pre or post check in/out, they’re well equipped and spacious. What was less good... After a 12 hour flight our early morning check in was muddled but we were eventually allocated the room type we booked. I think this is unusual and probably an attempt to allow us an early morning check in which backfired. Initially the everywhere staff seemed very inexperienced but as we settled in to the week either things improved or we got used to the style. Blue name badges are the more experienced team members and it really shows - so any problems seek out one of them! Beach - tables are rarely cleaned it seems and so many people squat on beds in the mornings that it gets competitive! My advice to the hotel is to ban bed squatters before 10am unless they are at the beds. Later in the day towels on beds are not removed possibly because of staff shortages so it looks like there are no beds when there are - confusing for newcomers. The beach also runs out of clean towels mid afternoon so they need more stock. Rooms - not perfectly clean in places and the Beach View was definitely not worth the extra cost; all suites face the sea (lower floors struggle to see it, higher don’t) and no where is far from the beach. So in summary - good value for the service provided but doesn’t quite match the marketing in my opinion. Yes 5 star but not in the same league as the other global players. Some great pics! Read less

LUX* Belle Mare went out of their way multiple times to ensure an unforgettable experience for us. The upgrade to the ocean view room was wonderful. The food at all the restaurants was delicious. The fine white sand on the beach was beautiful. Upon checkout, they found another room for us to use since we weren’t leaving the resort until 5:30 pm. That was the nicest touch that really left a positive impression on us. I wasn’t feeling well one day, so an employee at Cafe Lux was happy to create a lemongrass, ginger, and honey tea especially for me. That was also one of the nicest things that was ever done for me at a hotel. We met up with the general manager because we’d had a few issues during our stay at LUX* Le Morne, and they were concerned about the negative review I’d written, but LUX* Belle Mare completely made it up to me, and turned everything around for us. We really enjoyed our massages, and the use of the relaxation area afterwards. The staff was wonderful, friendly, and so helpful and attentive. I can’t say enough good things about this place. We often stay at St. Regis hotels, so our standards are exceedingly high. This place is definitely a solid contender with the St. Regis Mauritius. I can see why it’s been rated one of the best all inclusive hotels in the world. It deserves that honour. Btw, go all inclusive. It’s worth it. If we go back to Mauritius, we’d definitely stay at this hotel again. Read less

Had the most wonderful 9 night stay in Sept this year. We were welcomed by the fabulous Suanne who instantly made us feel relaxed and at home. This continued throughout our stay with all the staff being incredibly friendly - nothing was too much trouble and everyone always had a smile on their face (especially Dave!) Our suite was enormously spacious with modern decor and amazingly chilled out. The food was all to a high standard and we loved the variety of options available both during the day and at night. Definitely try it all including the fabulous Duck Laundry, Amari and Surf and Turf night on the beach. There’s lots on offer at the hotel, but only if you want to join in. Otherwise it’s very easy to while away the days on the gorgeous beach or in the pool. We took a one day trip to the Black River to swim with dolphins, which the hotel arranged, and we would absolutely recommend this incredible experience. All in all we cannot praise Lux Belle Mare enough and we will definitely be going back soon. Read less
