The St. Regis Mauritius Resort

Mauritius, Indian Ocean

The hotel

A luxurious throwback to the colonial days when Mauritius’ sugar industry thrived, the all-suite The St. Regis Mauritius Resort’s rambling grounds, residential atmosphere, and bespoke furnishings create the feel of a Victorian sugar baron’s mansion. The exclusive St. Regis Butler Service sweetens your experience – they’ll pour your morning coffee, make your dinner reservations, and even unpack (and repack) your cases. The homely feel here doesn’t mean you forgo resort treats though: there are lovely pools, water sports and exquisite dining and drinking spots, from the Asian Floating Market to the beachside Boathouse and Grill. The UNESCO World Heritage site at Le Morne Mountain provides a befitting backdrop to the resort with some of the world's best diving and kite-surfing only moments away. Days are best spent on the hotel's white sand beach, one of the island’s best, with its iridescent lagoon. Press the buzzer on your parasol and your drinks and snacks will be delivered to your lounger! If you want to escape the sun, head for the hotel's air-conditioned indoor cinema with its reclining chairs — some of your favourite films shown every day!

It did not disappoint! The service, food and property itself were all top notch. There are five restaurants on site...the Japanese was the best, in our opinion, but we didn't have a bad meal (one mediocre dinner in the Boat house, however). The beachfront bar was really nice...Kirvin took great care of us! He was a top notch server/customer service rep! We had a beachfront junior suite that we could walk right out onto the beach; it was very nice and spacious. The butler service is also a nice touch. They were there 24/7 for any random requests or anything of that nature. Overall a top-notch resort and we will definitely be back! Read less

The best address in Mauritius. That’s what St. Regis Le Morne claims. Is it the case or not? Let’s find it out! We booked our stay approx. in October and to be honest we started to be a little bit worried just a few weeks before our arrival having seen quite negative reviews on TA. It seemed that especially during December and January things were not going well in St. Regis Le Morne.... And yes, our stay didn’t start well. We requested a room on the upper floor nearly 4 months prior to our arrival and got assured that St. Regis would do their utmost to fulfill our requirement, especially when our request has been done so well in advance. We then got quite dissapointed when the room wasn’t available upon our arrival (actually we were told the room would not be available for the whole stay). I clearly pointed out this to be unacceptable for us both to the front desk staff and to the Manager on duty. I was assured the situation would be sorted out instantly. Nevertheless even after three hours there was still no solution despite I even offered a downgrade to a lower category of the room just to make things happen. In the end we had to involve also our travel agent and finally the next day the hotel management finally found a room for us (even upgraded us to a higher category). While we certainly appreciated being upgraded to a higher room category I still believe that a solution could have been found already the first day, especially when the hotel occupancy was at 60 % (as confirmed by the Manager on Duty). Unfortunately the continuous waiting for the room change has ruined the first day of our vacation... Well I do believe that such situation is always a great opportunity for a management team to demonstrate their ability of dealing with problems. Karine - one of the hotel Managers - did really a good job. She met us several times trying to find out whether everything was fine, even offered to us some complimentary benefits as a courtesy of St. Regis (we didn’t accept the benefits though since we found her professional and caring approach as sufficient level of acknowledgment). So how was our stay at St. Regis? SERVICE: the most negative reviews I’ve read on TA prior to our stay were related to service. Our experience was exactly the opposite - the service in restaurants was very good nearly everytime (few times I’d rated it as “good only”) but we definitely never experienced a slow or bad service in any restaurant/bar. It is not easy to capture all the staff who in my opinion outperformed but I’ve noted down a few examples from various restaurants: Nicolas, Rao, Alvin, Vishan, Kritesh, Riad - always very friendly, caring, helpfull, with a smile on their face. RESTAURANTS: there are five restaurants: Manoir (French-Mauritius cuisine), Simply India, Boat House (fish restaurant), Floating Market (Asian) and the Japanese restaurant. We haven’t been to the Japanese one but can comment on the remaining ones. The food was always very tasty (all restaurants are a la carte). Reservation upfront is required. We personally liked the Boat House and Simply India the most. Breakfast was served in the main restaurant (Manoir) however should you have the Platinum status you can enjoy your breakfast also at the Boat House. The selection was rather “standard” and except very poor egg omelletes we enjoyed our breakfast every morning. ROOM: We actually had a chance to stay at both Beach Front Suite and St. Regis Suite. Both are located literally a few steps from the beach but the St. Regis Suite is significantly bigger and has a separated living room. While the Beach Front was located on the ground floor (and therefore the room was much darker), the St. Regis Suite on the upper floor offered beautiful sea and Le Brabant Mountain views. We enjoyed every sunset sitting on the terrace. The only (but big!) drawback was the AC (see the bottom part). BEACH: Despite the fact the beach is being leveled up and cleaned every morning it is still full of coral fragments/ rough sand and therefore I would strongly suggest you to bring a pair of rubber shoes along - you might find it usefull anyway if you don’t wanna step on a coral, sea urchin or a stone fish in the sea. Surprisingly once you leave St. Regis towards the LUX Le Morne hotel you will find a very fine sand all the way up to the Paradise hotel....But the snorkeling is slightly better in front of the St. Regis (of course don’t expect much - the sea life is incomparable to Maldives)... KIDS CLUB: Do you choose your vacation also because of the Kids club in the hotel? We do. Unfortunately we found the Kids club in St. Regis a bit dissapointing. It seems that the programme is more tailored to younger children (approx. 3-5 years). For older kids the selection of activities was rather poor, especially when we compare it to other hotels we stayed in Mauritius or Maldives e.g... It also closes early and thus not giving the parents the opportunity for a dinner alone (we experienced this in a few other hotels where a dinner for children is organised in a Kids Club and parents can enjoy a few evenings for themselves). OVERAL RATING: St. Regis Le Morne truly is a luxury hotel with tasteful colonial design. If you are a silence seeker looking for a relaxing vacation it is certainly a great place to be. If you are more active (both in terms of sports/evening entertainment) you might find this hotel boring - there are barely any sport activities organised by the hotel (however there is a gym) and after 11 PM all the restaurants/bars close and the whole place is dead... Is St. Regis Le Morne perfect? It’s not. There are still things to improve but I am sure that by choosing it for your vacation you will not regret. We truly enjoyed our stay there and I can honestly recommend it. Just be aware of some drawbacks which we experienced: NEGATIVES/ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT: • The air condition in the room is terribly loud. We experienced it in both rooms and what was even worse in St. Regis Suite the built in AC is right opposite your bed - the air flow is strong and it blows right to your head. A great way how to get cold. We tried all possible AC settings ranging from AUTO, high, mid, low, eco, even tried to set the temperature to 25 degrees, asked the housekeeper - nothing worked. Unfortunatelly there is probably no solution to this since the AC is built in the wall (it is not a classic on wall unit). I’ve never experienced such noisy AC. • Curtain in the room was too short to cover the whole window so every morning you have a light in the room after sunrise - this is really ridiculous - the housekeeper/butler who prepares the room in the evening must have seen it but still nobody took any action to fix it • I mentioned restaurant/bar staff as a strenght of the hotel. On the other hand it happened quite often that some employees passing by didn’t greet us or/and other guests, some even didn’t reply to a greeting. It is not the end of the world but at this hotel category the Management should train their staff accordingly. • Buggy service - many rooms are a bit remote from the restaurants and therefore a buggy service might come handy. Again - while sometimes we experienced smiling staff happy to provide a buggy service, some seemed to be quite annoyed. We then rather walked instead of seeing a grumpy face of the driver • It is great when employees greet you with a name - that’s certainly a high level of the service. Unfortunately when it is not your name than it becomes a bit ackward (happened to us few times but of course it’s not a big deal) • There are no trash bins in the resort (or at least not a classic ones easy to find). While we got some fruit platter from our butler we put the plate with the leftovers behind the door/below the staircase - and it took the staff more than a half day to remove it • Breakfast basket on the day of our departure: We had an early flight and were offered a breakfast basket to take away - The Danish pastry and croissants in our breakfast basket were not fresh - tasted like from the previous day’s breakfast....
