Avani Seychelles Barbarons Resort & Spa

Seychelles, Indian Ocean

The hotel

A colourful hideaway offering a great atmosphere and fantastic views of the Indian Ocean. The 25-metre long swimming pool is one of the main attractions in the heart of this low rise resort. The Gravity bar has a shisha lounge upstairs, with cocktails, music and beach views. The stylish décor blends cool whites, warm woods, and turquoise details echoing the ocean waters. And there are beachside barbecues and waterfront dining venues. The AVANI also gives a taste of the rest of the Seychelles, with tamarind from the north infusing everything from ice creams to champagne rum cocktails. This is the complete island experience.

This was my first stay at an Avani Hotel, part of the Minor Hotels Group, having only ever stayed at Kempinski Hotels that are also part of the Minor Group. Where do I begin... Avani Barbarons Resort and Spa is located on a public beach that feels like a private beach as 99 percent of the people on the beach are hotel residents. It is serene and beautiful and the sunsets are not to be missed! There is a secluded and lovely cove for swimming. Though the hotel is 41 years old, my room was excellent - well located with a direct view of the ocean from my bed and balcony (I spent a lot of time enjoying the ocean from both vantage points). I absolutely loved that I had a bathtub and shower and loved, loved, loved the shower set up. I have never seen anything like it! You will have to visit to see the clever use of space that has been done with these showers. I hope they do not change this feature of the rooms when they refurbish the rooms. I liked the variety of meal options with the three restaurants (Elements, Tamarind, and The Terrace). Be warned, the food is so good that you may find that someone stitched your clothes smaller by the end of your stay! The jeans I travelled to Avani in were loose when I arrived. By the end of 10 days, I could barely fit into them! I am not lying or exaggerating. And I worked out seven of the 10 days at the well-equipped Avani Fit, otherwise only God knows what I would have worn for my trip back home! The main meal option is at Elements, which has a different theme every night. My plan was to have dessert twice over my stay, but each night I simply could not resist the spread that Chef Marcus and team put out. The lamb is also not to be missed! I highly recommend having at least one meal at The Terrace for the seafood and champagne special. Plan for an early dinner (7:00 pm) and go early to catch the sunset over cocktails. I imagine that it would make for a really special and romantic dinner surprise (thank me later). The view from the Terrace is breathtaking and the hotel needs to offer lunch there as well, as one does not really get to enjoy the view at night. The hotel was at 90 percent occupancy and is blessed to enjoy this pretty much throughout the year, but for some reason one does not feel crowded at any point in time, whether at meals or securing a spot by the pool or beach. The hotel is also well spread out. The icing on the cake and what sets Avani Barbarons apart from all the other hotels I have visited, is the team. It does not matter who you interact with, all of the people working there (with the literal exception of two and even they improved towards the end of my trip after I gave them and their supervisor feedback) are friendly, professional, attentive to detail, and customer service oriented. That said, I want to especially mention the following people who helped make my stay memorable - Iman, Wasim, Renish, Desmond, Chef Marcus, Thusan, Joanna, Aqeel, the gentleman who served me during my seafood special at The Terrace (sorry I did not get your name), the omelette lady (sorry I did not get your name), and Amar. Thank you all for going over and above the call of duty! I really enjoyed meeting the Management Team during the weekly Management Cocktail. It allowed me to interact with them and understand where and how the great team culture comes from. I have attended Management Cocktails at previous hotels, but in most instances the management do not interact with guests or appear to be on command performance/are forcing interaction. This was not the case with the Avani Barbarons Management Team. They continually interact with guests with great attention, humility, and a service culture. What impressed me the most is that they also solicit negative feedback - they actually want to know what is not working well and can be improved. The only downside to this hotel is that if you like to lounge by the beach with the ocean in clear view while having cover from the sun, you will have to either choose the cover from the sun under an umbrella or the beach with the ocean view as there are no umbrellas on the beach. The umbrellas closest to the beach are obstructed by a small bush that I imagine was set up for the privacy of those lounging on the beach beds. Perhaps, the hedge could be trimmed so that one can lay on a beach bed and still see the ocean. That said, there are plenty of beach beds with umbrellas by the pool. Also, be careful at check out. I was told that the amount that was pre-authorised on my credit card for extras had been returned by their bank, as I was just going to pay the difference. Instead I paid the full amount only to find upon my return that the amount has not been refunded to my credit card. And I left a group tip equivalent to the amount that was pre-authorised. I hope the hotel will expedite my refund. Thank you to the entire Avani Barbarons team right from the GM Nico to all those working behind-the-scenes that I never even got to see. You gave me the best introduction to paradise on earth (Seychelles), and I pray that I will be able to return again soon. To be honest, I am not sure where to go next as you set the bar very high, not to mention that Seychelles definitely has the most beautiful beaches on earth. Read less

Everything was perfect. Due to the location the hotel has a "private" beach. The staff was super kind and helpful all the time. Every night they offered different type of foods which were teszt. It was our dream vacation.
