Things to see and do in Sri Lanka

More about Sri Lanka

Habarana is at the heart of the so called Cultural Triangle and a great base from which to explore the area. No stay is complete without climbing the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. History buffs will love the ruins here and amazing ‘Sigiriya graffiti’ that originates from Ceylon civilisation. For those with longer stays, your driver can arrange for you to take a Jeep safari in Minneriya National Park, said to offer the island’s best elephant spotting.

Kandy is home to the Temple of the Tooth, said to come from the Buddha and is the country’s most important religious relic. Kandy itself is built around a lake and there are monasteries, palaces and botanical gardens to visit. Visit the spice gardens and discover the traditional uses of spices and medicinal plants.

Hatton lies in the Nuwara Eliya district in the centre of the country which is better known as the tea-producing region. Here, you’re up in the hills surrounded by lush green plantations and misty mountains. Visit a tea plantation and sample the local brews, and as this is Sri Lanka, you’ll never be far from wildlife and we recommend a visit to the Sinharaja Nature Reserve.

Yala National Park is probably the best park in the country and this is where you’ll have a chance of spotting leopards in the wild. Enjoy game drives in the park looking out for elephants, leopards and exotic birds.
