The hotel

It should have been hard to better the beauty of Anantara Kalutara Resort’s location (snuggled on a peninsula between the Indian Ocean and Kalu Ganga River, it’s totally tropical and intimately secluded) — but they managed it. Designed by Sri Lanka’s own Geoffrey Bawa, considered the island’s finest architectural talent, you get a genuine taste of Sri Lanka fused with contemporary twists, thanks to its dramatic scale, almost ‘urban’ clean lines, and bespoke furnishings. Its serene setting is ‘made’ for yoga and meditation in the spa’s pavilion, sunset cruises, kayaking, pool and beach days, evenings unwinding on your private balcony or terrace, relaxed meals at its international, Asian, and Italian restaurants, and lazy days strolling through the market before a Sri Lankan cooking class (although the Water Sports Club offers high-adrenaline alternatives like water skiing and speed boat trips too).

lots of very good things about staying here (2 weeks ago) - food is good, especially the breakfasts - generally good and pleasant service - not as far south as some other resorts in SL from colombo-shorter transfer! - they do a drinks evening once/week which was nice - cost of alcohol not as crazy as 5 star can sometimes be - we got a half board offer which was worth getting, as otherwise it would get pretty expensive - gym and pool facilities are good, and spa was nice and not overly expensive some downsides: - bad smell from toilet in our room all through holiday, and from speaking to others this was a common theme. probably not a coincidence that several toilets didnt flush properly throughout the resort - we had 2 small kids with us - and while the ladies in the kids club were pelasant and helpful, there were very few other kids around - so kids were not as excietd to go there as some other places we have stayed - while there are 3 restaurants, and they are all nice, the choice for the set menu (half board) in the italian restaurant was extremely limited. - housekeeping regularly would not get around to cleaning the bedroom until 3-4pm each day. on one occasion (as we wanted to get our daughter down for a nap in pm) i rang them to see if they could clean it early, and then rang again 1 hour later-took 3 calls and 3 hours to get them to clean the room. in summary, a very nice hotel, consistent with what you would expect from anantara. we got a good deal, so happy with the value...but if we had paid full trip i would have been disappointed. We have just returned from a stay early February 2019 at this lovely hotel. From the moment you arrive, escorted to reception by dancing girls you are made to feel tremendously welcome. The rooms are spacious, well appointed with nice touches - flip flops, beach bag, a bag for wet bathing suits, mosquito spray etc. If you are light sleepers stay in the Ocean view rooms as Lagoon view rooms can be a little noisy in the early hours so earplugs may be a solution! but this is only a minor quibble. The pools areas are looked after meticulously with ice cream, cold fruit, cold towels, fruit infused water & even a small tube of sun cream each day. We stayed on a half board basis & the food is delicious & varied - we ate mainly in the buffet restaurant however there are good alternative set menus provided in the Aquolina Italian & Spice Traders Asian restaurants where I can recommend the best ever crabmeat & sweetcorn soup followed by garlic prawns. All the staff are wonderful, greeting you cheerfully each time you meet & taking genuine care of their guests' wellbeing. The following members of staff were especially great: Sanjaya & Dilshan in the bar - these are two of the most happiest, friendly young men it was our pleasure to meet. Jude & all the pool staff (apologies for not getting all their names) for keeping the area spic & span, & great service. Lalith, Fazil & Wathanage in the dining areas - faultless service & great care & attention to detail. Thank you Wathanage for the ginger & mint tea when I had an upset tummy(due to overeating the delicious food).Yasseem - he is the most calm & polite young man & his level of service is outstanding. The executive chef Stefan always stopped for a chat & is to be congratulated for the menus he has devised & the amount of fresh coconuts he can open at lightning speed! We have to thank both Yasseem & Stefan for the most fabulous meal which they arranged on our last night - it will be a memory we will treasure forever. When leaving, we were sang a farewell blessing by the same dancing girls which is a nice touch. If you are thinking of visiting Sri Lanka we would highly recommend you consider this beautiful hotel for your stay. Read less

We loved everything about the Anantara Kalutara Hotel. The staff are very helpful and are always on hand when you need anything. There are lots of little touches, such as a basket at the pool with cool face towels, sun tan cream and oranges. Would love to go again.
