Anantara Kalutara Resort

Sri Lanka, Indian Ocean

The hotel

It should have been hard to better the beauty of Anantara Kalutara Resort’s location (snuggled on a peninsula between the Indian Ocean and Kalu Ganga River, it’s totally tropical and intimately secluded) — but they managed it. Designed by Sri Lanka’s own Geoffrey Bawa, considered the island’s finest architectural talent, you get a genuine taste of Sri Lanka fused with contemporary twists, thanks to its dramatic scale, almost ‘urban’ clean lines, and bespoke furnishings. Its serene setting is ‘made’ for yoga and meditation in the spa’s pavilion, sunset cruises, kayaking, pool and beach days, evenings unwinding on your private balcony or terrace, relaxed meals at its international, Asian, and Italian restaurants, and lazy days strolling through the market before a Sri Lankan cooking class (although the Water Sports Club offers high-adrenaline alternatives like water skiing and speed boat trips too).

We stay in Anantara hotels every year and this time on Honeymoon in Sri Lanka, opted to stay here for some luxury. The hotel delivered. The resort is huge with plenty to do and two lovely pools to chill around. Breakfast is excellent with plenty of choice and a few live cooking stations to get fresh eggs and waffles etc. We also ate dinner in the hotel which was a treat with another buffet and loads of choice - all well cooked. On check in, we were upgraded to a room that's up there with the best that we've stayed in. Incredible views over the sea, plenty of space and a really lovely bathroom. the staff are also great and couldn't do enough for us, special thanks to Eranda for arranging a late check out. Facilities include a (free) pool table - I highly recommend the sports bar, swimming pools, walks along the beach, gym and lots of other paid activities. My one criticism of the hotel, which is also consistent of the Anantara hotel chain is that they can be quite salesy. It's fine because you just have to be polite during the pitch for whatever activity is being promoted, but when looking at the gym, one guy in there (unprompted) told me all about the activities - slightly annoying when I was tired and exploring with my wife. Happily recommend this hotel for a relaxing, resort stay in a quiet and very pretty corner of Sri Lanka. Read less

I have unfortunately many unprofessional comments; 1- the time we arrived the hotel guy who was assigned to shadow us the room and the hotel facilities started to do another job of selling us another room which is more expensive though we booked and paid our Rooms earlier and this was not his job as he is a host not a marketing guy , unless he is doing free upgrade . 2-the other wrong thing this guy did that he was calling us every day 3 times to ask if we want to go for the lunch or the dinner in the hotel Resturant to call him on his PERSONAL MOBILE and book through him , this was weird, come on even if he looking for percentage from the Resturant or if he had target at the hotel and he need a to meet still this was too CHEAP., am sorry for that words BUT We are supposlty in a fancy and top resort in Srilanka. 3- we were walking at the beach and a guy came to us selling kind of shells So we didn’t want them he start to bargain and ask for 100 $ or any amount for. Help which is tooo bad for the place reputation especially it’s 5 stars hotel and he did the same for people sitting next to us too , the Worst thing that many people who. Works at the Hotel saw him but they didn’t stop him and they didn’t even apologize for us. 4- it was mostly raining every day though our stay , but we didn’t see any alternative plan from the hotel to entertain the residents who paid a good money to spend the holiday in there and this is commonly every fancy and 5 + starts hotels 5- I am sorry u don’t feel I can recommend that place , maybe the staff are new and they need to be more trained to meet the high Standards needed. I do personally visit Srilanka 3 or 4 times per year but I don’t think this will be my choice again Regard Abdulbaki Linda Lebanon Read less
