The hotel

A secluded spa retreat on a coconut plantation overlooking the Indian Ocean, the Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort is an inspiring setting for a ‘holistic’ holiday. Yoga, meditation or tai chi on the curving golden beach in front of the hotel relaxes you into holiday mode. You can even take private classes in your villa, or head to the spa for Ayurveda or reflexology. It sets you up for days exploring southern Sri Lanka’s national parks and cultural sights. This exclusive hideaway also offers exquisite dining. Stepping back to colonial days, Anantara’s pastry chef bakes scones for High Tea and local fishermen land their catch on the beach for Il Mare’s chefs to prepare — and you to enjoy at this dramatic clifftop restaurant. Or you can whip up your own island classics at the Spice Spoons kitchen!

Beautiful hotel. Fantastic service. Amazing food. And a commitment to preserve the environment. We were offered filtered water, we could reduce the amount of plastic bottled water we needed straight away. Thank you. Lots of wildlife in the grounds of the hotel. We stayed here for 5 days in a deluxe sea view room. The drumming and singing as we arrived was a nice welcome, as was the delicious coconut drink. Our room wasn't ready when we arrived (it was late morning so this is reasonable to expect). I think to kill some time and probably to try and sell us a room upgrade we were offered a viewing of their bungalow rooms with garden and beach views. With nothing better to do we went to have a look. These were lovely but we didn't feel we needed to spend the money on the upgrade. Thankfully there was no hard sell on our return. Our room was lovely with a nice sea view. It was cleaned to the highest standard every day and the turn down service at night was a nice touch. We received a bottle of prosecco and cake to celebrate our honeymoon on the first day in our room which was very much appreciated. All the staff around the resort were very professional and friendly. We didn't have any trouble getting a sun bed by the pool or beach. Each sunbed is laid out with 2 clean towels and you can get as many towels as you like during the day. From an environmental point of view this seems a large waste, particularly when you see the mountains of orange towels heading off for the laundry throughout the day. We ate at the pool bar for lunch a few times and food and service were excellent - the iced teas were very refreshing in the heat. We also ate in Verela restaurant twice - once for the Tepinyaki and once for the Sri Lankan. Both meals were lovely, again with very attentive service. My only criticism of the food/drink in the hotel would be the value for money. After spending 2 weeks travelling around Sri Lanka we had experienced fantastic food and drink at a fraction of the price. We found a nice bar/café just outside the resort and would often go here for drinks at 1/3 of the hotel prices. The breakfast buffet was of a very high standard with so much choice. We took advantage of the gym and sunrise yoga classes. The gym is well equipped and open 24 hours. The yoga classes outside with a sea view were fantastic. The guy that took these was fantastic and was the best way to start the day. Swimming in the sea from the hotels beach mostly consists of battling the waves but we really enjoyed this. My wife had a massage in the spa and really enjoyed it. Overall we really enjoyed our time here. The purpose of our stay was to completely relax after 2 busy weeks travelling around and it definitely delivered on that. Read less

Our recent family stay at Anantara was a magical experience. The resort is wonderful, the food divine and the staff exceptional. It was one of the best, if not THE BEST, resort we have ever stayed at and we will definitely return
