Cinnamon Citadel Hotel Kandy

Sri Lanka, Indian Ocean

The hotel

A tranquil retreat close to Kandy, when you stay at Cinnamon Citadel Kandy you'll awake to the sounds of birds and marvel at the view of the town shrouded in mist. The experience has been the same for centuries — pure relaxation in a lush haven, blending harmoniously with nature. Once the home of Dunuwille, a native Kandyan family, the refurbished hotel's guest rooms are furnished to a high standard, most with views of the river from your private balcony. There’s a lovely swimming pool surrounded by a terracotta sun terrace. The main restaurant overlooks the river and offers lavish buffets, or for a special treat, book a table at the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, lingering over a meal as the sun sets in the distance. Sightseeing close by includes the sacred Temple of the Buddha’s Tooth, the Peredeniya Botanical Gardens and Kandy Lake.

Really loved this hotel, the view of the river is stunning and the staff were so friendly, making us feel right at home! We were sad that we could only stay here 2 nights as it was most certainly our favourite hotel on the trip.

Hotel sits in the hills with a lovely view of the river and hills. It's a lovely hotel with good service, room, and pool. The buffet dining room can get quiet busy and warm (only ceiling fans) but a good food selection. Seems to be in a very pretty area of Kandy tough not in downtown.

A two night stay. The hotel is an older style - our bedroom was smallish and poorly illuminated but clean and comfortable. The staff are very well trained and very friendly. The restaurant serves a huge array of quality meals at all sittings. Outlooks from the lounge over the pool and the river from the pool are very good. An enjoyable stay.

Located on the banks of the Kandy river, the highlights of this property are the location and food. The buffet spread at both dinner and breakfast was just amazing. Couple of things they can still improve - provide water at the table, not make guests pay for water; don't bother with south Indian dishes if you don't know how to prepare them! As for location, the walk along the river bank is very pleasant. If you do the stroll right around dusk (about 6:45 PM), you can see the whole colony of bats take off overhead. The rooms have a nice view of the river as well. Although the staff are friendly, it took many phone calls and visits to the front desk to get things done. Read less
