Jungle Beach Resort

Sri Lanka, Indian Ocean

The hotel

Artfully incorporating existing trees and natural plant life into its design, you’ll feel like you’re staying in a tree house at the Jungle Beach Resort — but, we assure you, a tree house of the most luxurious kind. Rooms face either the beach, the lagoon or are immersed in the jungle. Teak walkways and stepping stones connect areas and lead the way to a rustic open dining area where you can hear the lapping of waves and birdsong. There is also a bar just across the lotus pond and a floating platform for lounge chairs by the pool, a waterfall cascading in the distance. If you can tear yourself away from such tropical splendour, the beach is well worth a visit — it’s one of the best in Sri Lanka. Enjoy a whale or dolphin watching excursion, or discover a wealth of underwater life as you snorkel at Pigeon Island Marine National Park. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served to suit your timetable, utilising only the best local ingredients. A private beach picnic under the stars is also highly recommended!

This was probably the best place that we stayed during our six and a half week visit to Sri Lanka. Sadly we only spent two nights at the hotel in a huge beach hut with a gorgeous balcony from which you could see the sea as well as the surrounding jungle. Our hut had chairs and sofas to sit on as well as a sofa, table and chairs on the balcony. Falling asleep to the sounds of the sea was delightful. The weather was as expected rather unpredictable in February but we enjoyed lying on the beach and walking along the beaches in the welcome sea breezes, even if the sea was too rough for swimming. Our routine was to swim in the pool and then move to the beach. We found the pool slightly oppressive in its jungliness and proximity to the restaurant, although it was very attractive. The food was excellent, especially the 'jumbo prawns' and French fries. Read less

Very tranquill with attentive staff. Upstairs lagoon rooms were best - the beach view cabins didn't have much of a view. Dinners were excellent - but priced at European level. The beach is long but quite narrow - with a lot of rubbish if you walked a few hundred meteres off the hotel area. Lovely to have a sundowner on the balcony of the lagoon room as the sun set and the water birds had their last meals. Read less

When we drove into the Uga Jungle Resorts, we could immediately sense that we were in for a treat. Welcomed by a warm and wonderful reception, the entry to the resort is gorgeous – picking up on traditional Sri Lankan coastal architecture and design and carrying it through all the common areas. The pool beckons you as you overlook it coming across a walkway toward the beach. And, we stayed in a very cool villa on the beach with a view of the ocean – stylishly designed and tastefully appointed with spacious sleeping, living areas and bathroom. But what really makes this resort sing is the staff and the fantastic service. From check in through check out, from the service manager, Ronson Francis to house keeping’s Kapilan & Selui, smiling accommodation, attention and service is a constant. I can’t recall everyone’s name and apologize for misspelling the ones that I do remember but I do want to highlight the restaurant food and service provided by Ravi, Navota, Harris and Shihan. And, the massage therapist, Tentri, is amazing. Plus one more mention – Vela, the lifeguard/boat pilot/snorkel guide is terrific. He took us on a great snorkel adventure to Pigeon Island and was a pleasure to be hang out with. Read less

We were there when the Covid-19 crisis began to unfold globally. It’s a lovely resort but not perfect, it lacked a naturalist (“he’ll be back in April when the tourist season starts”), had few activities and more than one little annoyance wrt the room. Our TV was stuck on a German news channel and at the highest volume, impossible to change or reduce the volume, and our phone barely worked (beach chalet 12). The chalet itself was lovely but there was no way to wash your feet if you wanted to walk back from the beach from your porch (around the side there is a tap). The à la carte menu is just about adequate (and unimpressive) and vegetarian options are few. The service was warm but slow (forgot our drinks, brought them after reminders, said they would be complimentary but charged us anyway :). Also, way too many crows at the partially open restaurant. The good news; the breakfast is great, Faiz provided wonderful service and their desserts are seriously Michelin star worthy. Read less

We stayed in a beach bungalow which was very private, spacious and well set out. The outdoor shower is the best we have ever experienced. The staff were all amazing. So wonderfully helpful and attentive couldn’t rate them highly enough. The bar staff have exceptional service and Angela the assistant manager was so helpful and accommodating. The food was wonderful and breakfast is an experience not to be missed. The beach is also lovely and patrolled by lifeguards. Would highly recommend this resort to anyone. Read less
