Jungle Beach Resort

Sri Lanka, Indian Ocean

The hotel

Artfully incorporating existing trees and natural plant life into its design, you’ll feel like you’re staying in a tree house at the Jungle Beach Resort — but, we assure you, a tree house of the most luxurious kind. Rooms face either the beach, the lagoon or are immersed in the jungle. Teak walkways and stepping stones connect areas and lead the way to a rustic open dining area where you can hear the lapping of waves and birdsong. There is also a bar just across the lotus pond and a floating platform for lounge chairs by the pool, a waterfall cascading in the distance. If you can tear yourself away from such tropical splendour, the beach is well worth a visit — it’s one of the best in Sri Lanka. Enjoy a whale or dolphin watching excursion, or discover a wealth of underwater life as you snorkel at Pigeon Island Marine National Park. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served to suit your timetable, utilising only the best local ingredients. A private beach picnic under the stars is also highly recommended!

After spending 2 nights at Ulagalla by Uga Escapes our standards had been set very high. Jungle Beach was very different but didn’t disappoint. What it lacked in absolute luxury it made up for by having some of the best food we’ve ever eaten. We could been any where in the world eating at a five star restaurant. We would stay here again just for the food. We had beach cabin number 2 and had a sensational view from our cabin and verandah. It was private and a minute stroll to the beach. You felt totally isolated in a very good way. The cabin was gorgeous and had both indoor and outdoor showers. We visited the spa and again the service couldn’t be faulted. We thoroughly enjoyed our 5 days here and only wish it had been longer. Read less

The way they serve the food by order and explaining about each increases the curious level, I have been there for my kid's birthday and they made an extra effort to treat her with a tasty cake! All staffs are very friendly, polite and maintain their smile entire day! They actually made missing something when leaving the hotel. Well done team - Raveendran, Anuradhi, sandaruwan, susantha, vidyani, selvi, Darshan, life guard and the leader Robert! Read less

The catering manager is very well organised and has a great team who are all friendly and helpful. Hotel have excellent and informative team. Get the hotel to take you to Pigeon Island on their own boat from the beach. Don't bother getting taxi to town to meet a boat. We were in a very nice chalet. Private path from the back of the chalet to the beach is very cool. Pigeon Island was incredible. The sharks don't bite. Swimming with huge sea Turtles. Never imagined I would ever get to swim with Turtles. Put it on your bucket list. Food is very, very good and a good choice from a'la carte menu. Beer is not over priced here and and they have good wines. Intend to bring family back here. Read less

As a single this is not the type of holiday I usually take but circumstances had me book several nights holiday in beach accommodation in Eastern Sri Lanka for a wedding. After the atrocities experienced in Sri Lanka at Easter I was unsure what travelling around would be like. Im happy to report that apart from increased security checks including Police checkpoints stopping vehicles especially at night, it was very relaxed. It was also very quiet with very few tourists. Firstly please learn from my mistake and either take a car and driver if you have plenty of time or, fly Cinnamon Air to access Trincomalee (and the Jungle Beach resort). The overnight train from Colombo is only for those sound sleepers with the good luck to only encounter healthy travellers...if you catch my drift! Accommodation at the JBR is great! Large rooms with high ceilings (c/w ceiling fans) and a/c, big comfy bed, private veranda under a small shade cloth, large bathroom and best of all, a private outdoor shower!! The beach was about 50m from the resort restaurant and my room and the water was calm and refreshing. Coming from the Middle East I really appreciated the increase in humidity and temperatures in the high 20s/low 30s. June is a great time to visit the East Coast as it’s the dry season, while at the same time it’s the wet season on the West Coast. I had included my food restrictions when I booked however these had not obviously been passed on to the kitchen. That said the chef did a great job making sure I had gluten free bread and personally checked my every food order to ensure I didn’t get anything that would cause me problems. Food wise I would say that if I was doing the same trip again I’d bring some Gf/df snacks with me. The only snacks the resort offered that I could eat were peanuts roasted in palm oil...which I left untouched for ethical reasons. I tried the Spa which was nice enough although rather expensive (Dubai prices) for what was provided. However, when I came to check-out the resort had given a USD100 spa voucher (unbeknown to me up to that point) to everyone booking beachside accommodation. It would have been nice to have known that prior to booking the treatment. Also, the spa experience would be greatly enhanced by mood lighting, some incense and the offer of a healthy tea and snack afterwards. Staff at JBR deserve a mention. They were lovely. Note to those training staff, one person asking if a guest’s meal is good is welcome; three, especially one after the other, is a little much! Overall, the resort is rather let down by the lack of maintenance around the property. Guests being charged resort prices in USD don’t really want to see thatching that needs patching, holes in bed covers, light fixtures with wires hanging out. It’s a pretty easy thing to get right - and make the right impression on guests. As I’m someone who likes to do stuff on holiday I would have appreciated some sunrise yoga sessions or kayaks to paddle around the bay...just an idea for the future. Be aware if you are coeliac that here in Sri Lanka they sell a ‘cider’, that is actually beer mixed with apple juice... Read less
