The hotel

Throwing you into island life and luxury living at the same time, the 58 hectare Shangri-La Hambantota Golf Resort & Spa stretches along Sri Lanka’s stunning southern shore and is brimming with surprises – from a flying trapeze to an aquapark complete with ‘inflatable human ball’. You’ll know you’re in Sri Lanka whether you’re playing golf among the coconut palms on the island’s only golf resort; bathing in its three outdoor pools; tucking into dishes inspired by South East Asia’s hawker stalls at Sera; unwinding with Ayurvedic massages at the spa; or chatting with the artisans at The Village, with everything from batik painting by day to island dancing by night.

We spent two weeks at this hotel in December and can only describe it as a wonderful relaxing stay where every member of staff in this hotel did their level best to ensure ones stay was unforgettable if things were not right they made it right. We enjoyed the Christmas tree lighting ceremony with the wonderful choir singers and the Shangri la hospitality of drinks and canapes it was a very nice touch. We attended the managers drinks on 2 Tuesday afternoons during our stay where again we had hospitality and it was great to chat to the manager who was a football fan. Special mention must be given to Lakmali in the restaurant every morning she was so cheerful and looked after our every need it was a pleasure to meet such a friendly face every morning. Also not forgetting Ajantha who brought us specially made coffee each morning which was greatly appreciated as we love our coffee. A big thanks to each and everyone of you at the Shanghri-La and we will be back to enjoy yourhospitality again one day! Read less

The hotel is beautiful with plenty of activities proposed - some come with an extra - and a great service with attention to details, the beach is wonderful. One thing to notice you are outside Tangalle or Hambantota. I recommend this place.

Up until now, if the opportunity arose to stay at a Shangri La property, I took it! I have stayed in several over the years and always enjoyed a 5 star experience. Alas, this property was a let down. Up until now, if the opportunity arose to stay at a Shangri La property, I took it! I have stayed in several over the years and always enjoyed a 5 star experience. Alas, this property was a let down. Don't get me wrong, it was fine but more 4* and a bit "hit and miss". Starting with the positives, every member of staff we met were very friendly and helpful. The few issues we had were dealt with quickly and resolved. Food and service in the Sera restaurant was very good on the 2 nights we ate there. The Ulpatha Clubhouse and bar was a lovely setting with cheery service and good food, albeit a limited choice - be sure to visit at happy hour! Our bedroom was fine, not quite as plush as other Shangri La properties but nothing to complain about - clean, excellent bathroom and great view. The adult only pool area was a pleasant place to spend the day and the only place with a view of the beach and sea beyond, unless you were on one of the upper floors. As for the not so good.....the Bojunhal buffet restaurant was disappointing - Lots of selection but not great quality. The Gimanhala Lounge was the greatest let down in terms of service - no table service, or at least we didn't experience it - there were 2 members of staff behind the bar chatting when we first entered and they didn't seem to notice us until I was stood in front of them waiting to ask for a drink. On the second visit (and last) there wasn't a single member of staff to be found! We waited about 15 minutes and gave up - and yes, it was supposed to be open! Perhaps my expectations were incorrectly calibrated since this is a resort location, whereas my past experiences were always city based hotels. The hotel is only 3 years old and yet it looked like it had been around for at least 6 years and not particularly well looked after. In terms of maintenance and cleanliness of the public areas, there was the lack of attention to detail virtually everywhere you looked.- scuffed furniture, floors needing a good scrub, plastic ground sheeting poking up through the gravelled areas etc. We spent 5 nights there and while it was ok, I wasn't sad to be leaving.
