Uga Bay by Uga Escapes

Sri Lanka, Indian Ocean

The hotel

Fusing Mediterranean architecture with tropical style, Uga Bay by Uga Escapes is set on one of Sri Lanka's most beautiful beaches, making it perfect for a relaxing holiday. Every guest room not only has a wonderful selection of amenities but also views of the ocean through the coconut trees. Protected by a coral reef, the water is ideal for swimming and aquatic sports, with some of the best snorkelling in Sri Lanka, or head to the infinity pool, which appears to be a part of the ocean too. A trip to the spa is highly recommended; after all, this is not just any spa, this is an underground spa! Cool and relaxing, Balinese techniques are utilised to leave you feeling rejuvenated and ready to tackle the sightseeing opportunities nearby. The hotel’s restaurant serves locally sourced fresh fish, keeping old traditions alive and satisfying your taste buds at the same time.

As it was our first tour of Sri Lanka there was a lot of effort put into route and choice of hotels. Many of the country’s hotel chains are local brands and not too many of the more common brands are available at most locations, chains such as Hilton and Peninsula. For this reason we were a little unsure of what to expect when selecting 5* properties - With Uga Bay we were not disappointed. First observations on entering the property was that the bare concrete frame/structure was a little cold and uninviting but this was just a passing thought, the grounds and staff soon made up for this. The property is set on a stunning beach location and free of local beach touts, which are often found around the world. The beach bar is an ideal spot for drinks and nibbles, especially as the sun goes down. Absolute chill! The staff at the hotel are super friendly, efficient and highly professional. Not once did we have reason to question this, whether it be room cleanliness or F&B. With regard to F&B, the evening buffet is very good and excellent value for money. We found the beach area to be the preferred area over the pool as it is quite sheltered with no breeze so could get very hot and uncomfortable in the regular 30c+ heat. Another negative for the pool area, and a big negative for a 5* property, is that there was no evidence of cold towels or complimentary water. This would be so easy to rectify. We will definitely plan another trip to Sri Lanka, possibly combining with Maldives, and are already considering other Uga properties in the country. An excellent property chain with amazing staff. Thank you for a terrific 5 nights Uga Bay. Read less

Our two nights here were very comfortable but it is a big resort. The architecture is very pleasant and the grounds beautifully maintained. The hotel is set back from the beach and blends in with the surroundings, unlike one enormous hotel just to the south. Pasikuda beach is a wonderful crescent of pale sand, although in February the sea was very rough. The food was very good and we were able to sit and eat on the outdoor veranda. For non-package guests for dinner there is either a buffet or a la carte menu. We tried both. A la carte, the grilled reef fish 'catch of the day' was excellent, my husband's barbecued ribs less so. The Sri Lankan dishes in the buffet were good, although some seemed rather under-spiced. We also enjoyed having a beer at the beach bar. More negatively, the infinity pool was too shallow. Also whilst we were there a group of noisy youngsters moved from volley ball to the pool, taking it over completely for most of an afternoon which was offputting. We had a beautiful view of the sea from our beach studio but, with so many people in sun loungers right outside our window, our little patio area wasn't very private. The room could also be a bit noisy when the people upstairs moved their furniture around. Read less

The hotel offers a best stay if you are looking for a quiet beautiful place in a not very touristic area. The good atmosphere with their stuff, makes it very pleasant to be there . For us is very important, a good care of the working people. Most employees are locals ,as well most products or cooperation partners are from the local area , which gives the local economy a good support. This important point for us is , investment in the local economy versus exploitation and only benefit for big investors. Next positive point is the respect towards the nature in many areas : no plastic ,all refill and reusable material, Solar energy system on the roof of the hotel. On top of all ,the very big and comfortable rooms , almost all with balcony and fantastic seaviews even from the shower . We have been the second time in Uga Bay and would any time like to come back . Our special thanks to some outstanding stuff : Tareek , Fairooz from the service and the lovely lady Patiba from the kitchen team ,the guys at the morning buffet pancake area. But really all stuff was amazing!! Read less
