Ulagalla Resort

Sri Lanka, Indian Ocean

The hotel

A luxury hotel with a 150-year old mansion at its centre, Ulagalla Resort was once the ancestral estate of local Anuradhapura nobility. A luxury hotel, it’s a wonderful place to stay, full of atmosphere and beauty, most of which is ecologically sustained. Bowing to the elements, the hotel has its own solar farm, making it cutting edge too in green terms. Accommodation is in chalets spread throughout the 58-acre estate — spacious inside, they are packed with home comforts, including flatscreen TV, WiFi and four-poster beds. Each has its own private plunge pool, ideal for cooling off in anytime of day or night, and there is 24-hour room service, ensuring you can do what you came here to do — relax! For something a little more strenuous try some of the resort activities on offer, such as kayaking and nature tours. Enjoy feasting on gastronomic delights, including home-grown fruit and vegetables, at the main restaurant or request a meal and have it delivered to your chalet — just tell the chefs what you fancy and they will oblige!

Sure it is far from everything. It's a resort. And what a resort! The grounds are exquisite with reflecting ponds and a huge pool that is barely used because people have pools in their chalets. The wildlife is fabulous to watch and the restaurant is a lovely place to view the peacocks strutting about. The breakfasts were plentiful and the dinners were superb. Cocktails on the porch were a sublime experience. The staff here is wonderful and helpful and well trained. You do have to take a golf cart to your chalet, but the staff comes right away when called. Your chalet is luxury itself. I can't think of any more superlatives. All in all a fabulous and wonderful two nights here. Highly, highly recommend. Read less

Great property. Loved the concept of individual chalets. Heard that the hotel is a very eco friendly hotel. Loved the landscape and how the hotel shows so much importance to nature. Staff was great. Pool was large and loved it

When you arrive you have the feeling to enter someone old and stylish residence. It’s a great example of a conservative building in Sri Lankan’s style. Great friendly staff, huge comfortable room, amazing quite pool and an amazing young chef who delivers, with great passion, authentic local food. Loved our stay! Read less

We are traveling in Sri Lanka for one month and I have to say that this is one of the best place that we have experienced. Ulagalla it’s a fantastic example of conservative farm house with a sensitive touch, tasty food and unique service. From when we walked in until the end of our stay (tomorrow), everything has been perfect. The place it self is very welcoming and warm with a very beautiful and traditional design. Exactly what we were looking for. The room are very big and clean in a perfect way, with all the comforts and amazing view on the rice field and private pool. The main house is cozy and what makes the dinner is the staff, very friendly and it makes you fell like at home. Special note goes to Khant (I believe his name it’s like this) who speaks a bit of Italian in a cute and sweet way and since the first moment he has been perfect and very welcoming with us. A special thanks goes to the chef Sesha Fernando and his Team that gave us a unique and truly Sri Lankan’s experience with food. We had for 3 nights (all our stay) the dinner in this place. Every time has been unique and always different from the previous. It’s highly recommend to have dinner here. There are two restaurants: one international with a Sri Lankan touch which is very good and one in the middle of the rice field where you experience the truly farm to table dinner. Thank you! Has been such a pleasure! Read less

From the moment I queried about the reservation the service has been absolutely wonderful. They accommodated all of our requests without any fuss and what surprised me the most was the attention to detail - and the constant check -in with us to make sue we are ok (by no means was this intrusive). The impeccable service, the AMAZING food (Uga never has let us down) and the lovely setting really made our stay a memorable one and we are already planning to re-visit (my husband wants to make it an annual trip - lol). A Big THANK YOU to Dilrukshi and her team for being so authentic in their hospitality. Thank you once again for welcoming us and making our stay a wonderful one – highly highly recommend this property to anyone. Read less
