Ulagalla Resort

Sri Lanka, Indian Ocean

The hotel

A luxury hotel with a 150-year old mansion at its centre, Ulagalla Resort was once the ancestral estate of local Anuradhapura nobility. A luxury hotel, it’s a wonderful place to stay, full of atmosphere and beauty, most of which is ecologically sustained. Bowing to the elements, the hotel has its own solar farm, making it cutting edge too in green terms. Accommodation is in chalets spread throughout the 58-acre estate — spacious inside, they are packed with home comforts, including flatscreen TV, WiFi and four-poster beds. Each has its own private plunge pool, ideal for cooling off in anytime of day or night, and there is 24-hour room service, ensuring you can do what you came here to do — relax! For something a little more strenuous try some of the resort activities on offer, such as kayaking and nature tours. Enjoy feasting on gastronomic delights, including home-grown fruit and vegetables, at the main restaurant or request a meal and have it delivered to your chalet — just tell the chefs what you fancy and they will oblige!

We adored this hotel and if we had to pick one hotel in Sri Lanka out of the ones we stayed at, this would be it. The room(s) were huge, comfortable and well appointed. In fact, we considered that they had thought of everything, even down to that bugbear of hotels, proper light to read by in bed. Although our room was a fair way from the main building, the buggy service to it worked very efficiently (it was too hot to walk). The service for our first meal, being lunch on arrival, was slow, but this turned out to be an exception as it was very good thereafter. We would very happily stay there again. Read less

It was pretty empty when we stayed and we had the pool almost to ourselves. The pool is fantastic and we saw 3 different sorts of monkeys whilst we lounged by the pool. We really liked the place overall and the room was awesome. The hot water was super hot, way to hot in my opinion so be careful getting into the shower! We dined at the Kamatha… Read more

We dined at the Kamatha restaurant one night, the setting is lovely but I don't think it was worth the price for the food but that could just be me. Loved the electric punkawallah fans in the main restaurant and thought the food was good. This was the only place we stayed before being pulled out of the country because of the virus but would definitely go back there. Read less

To start with, the welcoming process including the ritual was warm and amusing. Next, the villa we were given had a lot of privacy and it was serene and divine. To be honest, we loved every bit of it from the beginning to the end. We were satisfied to a point where we decided to bring our families next time. We are so amazed by the way we were treated during our whole stay and have no enough words to describe the level of satisfaction. Thank you Ulagalla by Uga Escapes for the immense effort you put into to make the stay perfect for the guests. Read less

After a gap of 5 years, we were welcomed again, most warmly and very generously. Ulagalla is supremely comfortable and there is so much to see and do in the area, The staff, many of whom remembered me from previous visits, are outstanding and the food is delicious. We cannot recommend this wonderful hotel more highly.
