Ulagalla Resort

Sri Lanka, Indian Ocean

The hotel

A luxury hotel with a 150-year old mansion at its centre, Ulagalla Resort was once the ancestral estate of local Anuradhapura nobility. A luxury hotel, it’s a wonderful place to stay, full of atmosphere and beauty, most of which is ecologically sustained. Bowing to the elements, the hotel has its own solar farm, making it cutting edge too in green terms. Accommodation is in chalets spread throughout the 58-acre estate — spacious inside, they are packed with home comforts, including flatscreen TV, WiFi and four-poster beds. Each has its own private plunge pool, ideal for cooling off in anytime of day or night, and there is 24-hour room service, ensuring you can do what you came here to do — relax! For something a little more strenuous try some of the resort activities on offer, such as kayaking and nature tours. Enjoy feasting on gastronomic delights, including home-grown fruit and vegetables, at the main restaurant or request a meal and have it delivered to your chalet — just tell the chefs what you fancy and they will oblige!

Most of all the entire setting of the villa was very pleasing and relaxing. Live music (flute) at the Dinner was over-the-top! A point to improve would be attention to details in the maintenance aspect of the exterior of the villas (private pool water had Chlorine added to a noticeable level, steps to the villas has worn out paint due to usage over time, there were some broken cement shades of garden lights, etc.), even though it was only a minor matter when it comes to the overall experience of the stay. We visited the hotel more than 6 times now and yet we have not had enough. Since it was our repeat visits, the hotel had always arranged a cute, delicious cake to celebrate our comebacks. Then again, all those moments were not missed by the front office staff. The welcome ritual is a wonderful experience which we always remember. The deluxe villa is their latest room category and believe me it was out of this world. In our first and second visits the deluxe villas were under construction but afterwards it was our biggest sensation. The villa was so spacious and there were two bathrooms- one in the living room and the other for the bedroom and pool. The plunge pool was huge and private. The pool deck is large and extends to a massive area that includes a great view to the green bushes and fields. The entire design of the villa is luxurious and feels like home. The food at the restaurant tasted heavenly. The menus were not always the same so we had great dishes to choose from. The Kamatha restaurant has authentic Sri Lankan food and the decor is magical. The breeze from the paddy feilds soothes our stressful minds. A big thanks to Mrs. Geethanjalie, Mr. Vino, Nilu, Dilrukshi, chefs, bar and everyone at Uga. I highly recommend the hotel to have a fabulous experience! Read less
