Ulagalla Resort

Sri Lanka, Indian Ocean

The hotel

A luxury hotel with a 150-year old mansion at its centre, Ulagalla Resort was once the ancestral estate of local Anuradhapura nobility. A luxury hotel, it’s a wonderful place to stay, full of atmosphere and beauty, most of which is ecologically sustained. Bowing to the elements, the hotel has its own solar farm, making it cutting edge too in green terms. Accommodation is in chalets spread throughout the 58-acre estate — spacious inside, they are packed with home comforts, including flatscreen TV, WiFi and four-poster beds. Each has its own private plunge pool, ideal for cooling off in anytime of day or night, and there is 24-hour room service, ensuring you can do what you came here to do — relax! For something a little more strenuous try some of the resort activities on offer, such as kayaking and nature tours. Enjoy feasting on gastronomic delights, including home-grown fruit and vegetables, at the main restaurant or request a meal and have it delivered to your chalet — just tell the chefs what you fancy and they will oblige!

The private pool and the deck super luxurious. You have avaiable bikes in each villa to roam the property, which is beautiful and well kept. Also the is a buggy service available to bring you to the restaurant and back. The food is great! The activities avaiable are also interesting. We took the village bike ride and had a great time! Common pool huge and beautiful; the gym nice and well equipped. I'd love to go back and would totally recommend this place; worth every penny. Read less

While the drive to get to this place from Colombo was a bit tiring, it was absolutely worth it! The last 1 hour of the drive itself starts giving you a preview of what you would be treated to, at this magical retreat nestled amidst acres of lush greenery. The resort felt more like an AFRICAN Safari lodge property than a sri lankan accommodation. You have the options to cycle through the jungle and view sunsets by the lake front or go on birdwatching. The resident PEacocks add a touch of romantic vibe. And the high class hospitality that greets you and treats you all through the stay will make you cry when the time comes to depart and leave this tranquil paradise behind! LOCATION: In Ulagalla district in a national park area that is around 4 hours drive from Negombo. DINE + DRINK: A characterful Bar at lobby level and a restaurant that serves mindblowing spread of Sri Lankan cuisine whipped up tastefully by Master Chef JEROME TISSERA who could easily be a Michelin starred chef ROOM: We stayed in Villa #7, so this review is based on that; VIEW: Romantic view of the lush jungle with a private Plunge Pool; SIZE: Huge Suite that had multiple areas and spaces. Was bigger than the apartment we live in KL!!! The outside deck area with the plunge pool is THE highlight of the villa!; AIR-CON: Perfectly functioning cooler that helped in setting the perfect room temperature; BED: Comfortable bed that played the expected part to put me to sleep; BATHROOM: Stand in shower; TOILETRIES: Mind Blowing Spa quality cosmetics that treat your body to a level of calmness like any luxurious spa treatments would do FACILITIES: Super compact Gym with a basic range of weights and Cardio machines , but highly dated and rusting. But the Huge pool more than makes up for it. And of course you have a lot of other recreational activities you can indulge in like Horse riding, Cycling, Pool/Billiards etc. SERVICE: Friendly staff that took care of all my needs with a smile and made us feel pampered and well taken care of. Special Shout out to JEROME TISSERA (the Chef), Kant and the service staff. HOW WIRED YOU WILL BE: Free high speed Wi-Fi that works well all over the property. Big Plasma TV screen dishing out dozens of channels spanning sports, news, music, movies and a wide variety of entertainment in multiple languages Read less
