Ulagalla Resort

Sri Lanka, Indian Ocean

The hotel

A luxury hotel with a 150-year old mansion at its centre, Ulagalla Resort was once the ancestral estate of local Anuradhapura nobility. A luxury hotel, it’s a wonderful place to stay, full of atmosphere and beauty, most of which is ecologically sustained. Bowing to the elements, the hotel has its own solar farm, making it cutting edge too in green terms. Accommodation is in chalets spread throughout the 58-acre estate — spacious inside, they are packed with home comforts, including flatscreen TV, WiFi and four-poster beds. Each has its own private plunge pool, ideal for cooling off in anytime of day or night, and there is 24-hour room service, ensuring you can do what you came here to do — relax! For something a little more strenuous try some of the resort activities on offer, such as kayaking and nature tours. Enjoy feasting on gastronomic delights, including home-grown fruit and vegetables, at the main restaurant or request a meal and have it delivered to your chalet — just tell the chefs what you fancy and they will oblige!

Everything about this hotel is exceptional; from the welcome , to the meals, surrounding, rooms, service of the staff, amenities. Simply everything is wonderful. We stayed only for one night but only hoped that we could stay longer. The visit was extremely relaxing.

A large estate over a couple of hundred acres around paddy fields and a nearby lake, Villas are dispersed and beautiful with excellent fit out and plunge pool. Delightful and very colonial style. Staff were excellent from arrival, food very good in main house. We tried the new Sri Lankan field restaurant ( literally a mud hut in the middle of the paddy field ) and this was a complete revelation - absolutely superb. Food cooked over a clay stove and served in local pots - very sri lankan style cooking so we ate a selection of dishes prepared for us which we had little idea what they were, other than delicious - an inspired idea by the chef and local team We also did the horse riding and bike rides, saw lots of wildlife ( monkeys, peacocks, eagles) and adopted a small puppy at our villa. What a lovely place - we had it pretty much to ourself at the main pool despite there being a few other guests. It feels like staying on a private estate with butler service and is not a hotel. Go there, you will love it... Read less

You are away from others, and brought into the dining room via electric cart taxi. Large swimming and rice paddies abound. To really benefit from its location, which is a bit further to drive to, one should stay a few nights. The staff prides themselves on saying ‘Welcome Home’ and it does feel sincere. However when I left behind a piece of clothing, despite having my email address, they never contacted me. Only a couple of properties later did I realise my error and luckily arranged its retrieval. Surely My Home should have contacted me. Read less
