The hotel

Putting you on top of the world, this canyon-skirting retreat is the very height of luxury. Claiming a patch of Saiq Plateau on Oman’s temperate Green Mountain, it appears like a fortress rising from rocks – but inside it’s immaculately dressed, from its canyon-view rooms to its private pool villas. You’ll find chic Arabic detailing in its intoxicatingly calm spa and six dining outlets too – including Al Qalaa, an Arabian grill set in a tower inspired by Oman’s iconic Khasab Castle. With the resorts breathtaking mountain destination the views take the lead here, whether you’re swimming in the canyon-edge infinity pool, enjoying mountain experiences (like luxury picnics, photography classes, stargazing, cinema under the stars, mountain yoga, and mountain biking), or just soaking it all in at ‘Diana’s Point’, a viewing platform named after the Diana, Princess of Wales, who once visited the site of Anantara Al Jabal Akhdar Resort.

This attractive hotel is stunningly located, perched on the edge of a plunging canyon in the Jebel Akhdar. The rooms and facilities reflect the standard of a five-star hotel, with a well-appointed spa and amazing infinity pool. However, when we visited all guests on half-board were required to take dinner in La Maison restaurant, which offers buffet service reminiscent of an all-inclusive wristband resort. Cheap ingredients had been tossed into one-pot casseroles and curries (presumably to keep costs down) and there was no a la carte offer. This was disappointing - guests are essentially paying a five-star price to eat in a three-star buffet. Breakfast was a similar affair. With so few guests a more attentive, a la carte style service for both meals would have better reflected the price of this stay and been more in keeping with the otherwise excellent experience. After a longish drive from the airport and steepish climb in our 4x4, we arrived at this fabulous resort in the Green Mountain. Pros: - Super check-in experience with orientation, welcome drink and dates. Check-out was also excellent with various parting gifts. To be frank, the service throughout our stay was exemplary. - Beautifully appointed room, large bathroom with separate shower, separate dressing area, and stunning views of the canyon and beyond. The room contained all mod-cons including bluetooth speaker/music system, a Nespresso machine (with capsules re-filled daily), and in-room movies channel which you don't normally find at other Middle Eastern hotels. - The infinity pool overlooking the canyon was serene and magical, especially at sunset. Be careful with the sun, it’s much cooler in the mountains but the sun is extremely strong. - Buffet dinner was well executed, with a good range of items albeit a little repetitive. Breakfast was also very good with separate egg station and pancake/waffle station. - There’s an excellent spa, good gym, tennis court and a bicycles available for hire. Cons: - Some of the activities, such as rock climbing, are quite expensive. Others you can undertake yourself for free, e.g. the walking tour of the three villages (a route map is provided). Overall, this was a truly memorable place for our brief stay in Oman. Read less
