Anantara Al Jabal Akhdar Resort

Oman, Middle East

The hotel

Putting you on top of the world, this canyon-skirting retreat is the very height of luxury. Claiming a patch of Saiq Plateau on Oman’s temperate Green Mountain, it appears like a fortress rising from rocks – but inside it’s immaculately dressed, from its canyon-view rooms to its private pool villas. You’ll find chic Arabic detailing in its intoxicatingly calm spa and six dining outlets too – including Al Qalaa, an Arabian grill set in a tower inspired by Oman’s iconic Khasab Castle. With the resorts breathtaking mountain destination the views take the lead here, whether you’re swimming in the canyon-edge infinity pool, enjoying mountain experiences (like luxury picnics, photography classes, stargazing, cinema under the stars, mountain yoga, and mountain biking), or just soaking it all in at ‘Diana’s Point’, a viewing platform named after the Diana, Princess of Wales, who once visited the site of Anantara Al Jabal Akhdar Resort.

We spent 4 nights at the end Feb into March. It was our 3rd visit to the mountains but our first to the Anantara. It is a great looking hotel with staff who try very hard to make you welcome. There were, however, some things which let the hotel down during our stay. The first was that when we were taken to our room on arrival we were introduced to a room which had not been prepared. The gentleman led us back to reception and after a short delay we were taken to a room properly prepared. The room itself was very nice, great bathroom, good size, nice balcony to sit out in the sun and take in the amazing view. My wife did get repeated electric shocks when going in and out of the balcony door. We did not report this to staff. During our stay we ate at the Arabian Restaurant which was good but not exceptional. The other evenings we ate at the buffet restaurant where breakfast was also served. Again it was good but not exceptional with a bit of a canteen feel. The other thing which let the hotel down slightly was that on 2 occasions our room key did not work. We revisited reception who simply "updated" it and it then it worked. They didn't seem surprised when we took it to be fixed. Everything else was good, especially another mention for the staff, each and every one who we interacted with was excellent. Would I advise anyone to visit? Absolutely. Would I revisit? We would revisit the Alila which is further up the mountain and has a different feel which we preferred. Read less

Great location, really pleasant and clean rooms, but the thing that makes this such a good place to stay are the staffs and location. All of the people are incredibly helpful and generous with their time and advice. The room was very good with comfortable furniture and the bed was comfortable too. We would definitely stay here again.

I can sum up the Anantara Al Jabal Akhdar resort in one word - wonderful. Along with a friend, my husband and I had an overnight stay there a week ago. It was my friend's birthday and I'm sure, if you asked her, she would say that it was a very special birthday indeed. Due to time constraints, we could only stay the one night but that did not take away from the impact the hotel made on us. Our rooms were perfect in every way with the amazing views over the mountains framed like an oil painting through the sliding doors. Every effort had been made to welcome us and make our stay as memorable as possible, with special birthday treats within the rooms and a surprise birthday cake at dinner. Although much cooler in temperature than Muscat, the air felt fresh yet not too cold and walking around the grounds was such a pleasure as the flowers and plants have been so well sourced and located along winding paths. The pool was a perfect temperature for swimming and comfy pool towels are always available. The view from the pool is spectacular. I think the most overriding impression I got from our visit was the sense of calm in all areas of the hotel. I can't praise the staff enough. Omanis are know for their hospitality and this was proffered in abundance. In fact all the staff were gracious, helpful and interesting and the young lady from Myan Mar who served us at dinner, was delightful. I would absolutely recommend the Anantara to anyone visiting Oman - the drive alone up to the hotel is quite something as is the hotel itself of course but it's the staff who really make a place and one could not ask for any better. Please go and discover this for yourself. Read less
