Oman, Middle East

The hotel

Putting you on top of the world, this canyon-skirting retreat is the very height of luxury. Claiming a patch of Saiq Plateau on Oman’s temperate Green Mountain, it appears like a fortress rising from rocks – but inside it’s immaculately dressed, from its canyon-view rooms to its private pool villas. You’ll find chic Arabic detailing in its intoxicatingly calm spa and six dining outlets too – including Al Qalaa, an Arabian grill set in a tower inspired by Oman’s iconic Khasab Castle. With the resorts breathtaking mountain destination the views take the lead here, whether you’re swimming in the canyon-edge infinity pool, enjoying mountain experiences (like luxury picnics, photography classes, stargazing, cinema under the stars, mountain yoga, and mountain biking), or just soaking it all in at ‘Diana’s Point’, a viewing platform named after the Diana, Princess of Wales, who once visited the site of Anantara Al Jabal Akhdar Resort.

We had arranged a transfer from muscat airport direct and found this to be very efficient and relaxing way to arrive. Interesting journey and then you arrive at the hotel with the most stunning views. We had booked half board and particularly liked the a la carte restaurant. Breakfast was delicious and we sat outside enjoying the views. Our room was lovely and as requested close to the pool. The only thing I hadn’t anticipated was quite a large number of small children at times. We went on a walk arranged by the hotel and found this very interesting. Stayed 4 nights as part of a 2 centre trip. We would return ! Read less

They knew how to keep our young family happy. Staff certainly went out of their way and special mention to our guide Old Suleiman at the recreation centre. He was our tour guide and my rock climbing guide. Fantastic knowledgeable guy who really wants people to enjoy their stay. We thoroughly enjoyed the spa and the staff were very flexible to our our requirement and timings as we had young children. Hotel laundry were excellent. Food was of high quality and excellent. If I could make one comment is to increase the variety or having something different for breakfast every day. Although the breakfast was excellent, I found it slightly monotonous. Overall an excellent hotel and I would highly recommend it. Stayed in room 261 which was a solid choice room. Excellent views! Read less

We were very disappointed in our experience at this hotel. The facilities were excellent – huge bathrooms, large balcony with comfortable furniture overlooking the canyon, large comfortable bed, excellent linens and towels. The property is expertly maintained and in a beautiful setting right on the canyon’s edge. The staff was, with one notable exception, exemplary. They listened patiently to our concerns and tried to address them where they could. The only exception was our experience with a woman at the front desk, who was curt and borderline rude when dealing without our request to change to a quieter room. And this, essentially, is the crux of the problem. This resort is apparently two different places entirely depending on the time of year you arrive. We are a couple who were looking for a quiet, peaceful, relaxing, romantic experience. Apparently, this is provided by this resort at certain times of year. Unfortunately, unbeknownst to us, we arrived during school holiday, when this resort turns into a family vacationland. There were over 50 children, 38 of whom were under the age of 5, when we were staying there. That the staff knew the exact numbers said something about the experience. The resort is not a huge property, and most of it consists of a large courtyard enclosed on four sides by the resort’s buildings. The half-board rate also insures that everyone eats at the same two restaurants on the property. These features combined to ensure that it was very difficult to find a moment of peace and quiet anywhere on the property during our three-day stay. This included in our room. There was a family with a baby and a toddler above us. When we asked to move to another room that was not adjacent to a family with small children, we were told that there was quite literally no place on the property where that was the case. We ran into several other couples who were equally frustrated that the experience was not what they had expected, and the staff candidly divulged that they had received numerous complaints about the noise and general chaos. The advice we received, which turned out to be accurate, was that they only way to achieve peace and quiet at either breakfast or dinner was to arrive either very early or very late – meaning breakfast before 8 a.m. and dinner after 8:30 p.m. We were able to find quiet spaces on the property only by haunting the empty balcony bar during its closed hours. Finally, other reviews have noted that the food is sub-par for a hotel of this quality. This is true of the breakfast and dinner buffets. Dinner in the Arabic restaurant was quite good, but the half-board rate only includes a flat rate that does not cover most dinners, so you end up paying more to eat in the good restaurant than in the bad one. Also, the two restaurants mean there is not much variety if you are staying for more than a couple of days. Overall, we were very disappointed. The staff was clearly aware of the conflict created by the couples looking for quiet and the families who wanted to let their children run free but seemed powerless to do anything to address this problem. There are steps management could have taken to try to accommodate these divergent needs – putting couples and families in separate wings of the resort, providing adults-only hours at the pool, precluding children from the bar. Our strong advice to couples looking for a romantic, relaxing vacation is to check the school holiday schedule in Oman, UAE, and the neighboring countries. Also, it could not hurt to simply contact the hotel and find out how many families with young children they are expecting – if it is more than a handful, we would advise staying away. If we had known we were booking a stay at Oman’s version of Disneyland, we would have chosen to go somewhere else. Read less

Amazing location on cliff edge overlooking the canyon with spectacular views, including the famous Diana's Point. Resort is a 2 hour drive from Muscat airport, we used the resort's transfer service with their luxurious 4WD SUVs. Roads in Oman are very good, the last portion to climb the mountain is very steep. There is a guard checkpoint at the mountain base, so they might not let non-4WD vehicles pass. The resort is about 2,000 m above sea level and the weather is cool (10-20 C). It rained when we were there and got very cold. Rooms are big & luxurious Anantara-style. All rooms have views of the canyon but the best ones are on the pool villa side. Due to the remote location, we had to depend on the resort for all meals & activities. There are Arabic, Italian & international restaurants available, but for long stays it the food might get abit tedious due to the limited selection. Activities we tried: - 3 Village walk: A half-day hike through 3 semi-abandoned ancient villages along the canyon edge. Some parts need a level of physical fitness & balance, since we needed to cross a stream by stepping over boulders, and also walking along a narrow irrigation channel. - Nizwa tour: Full day tour of nearby Nizwa town with its market & castle fortress, and other forts in Jabrin & Bahla. - Jabal Walk Activity: This is the highlight. Cliff rock climbing for beginners but not for the faint hearted. Leaning over an almost 1,000 m sheer drop with just the safety rope attached, then abseiling down an 18m cliff and climbing up another 22 m cliff. Service was excellent, from the exec level to the serving & cleaning staff all friendly, helpful & professional. Big thanks to the guides & instructors in the Recreation Center for organizing our activities. Read less

We had a wonderful few days at the Anantara! This is a place where you can do as much or as little as you want, it caters to all. The hike down into the canyon, to the wadi was a particular highlight. Suleman, our guide, was very knowledgeable about the local area and kept our children engaged. The walk is not too difficult but does involve some steep scrambling. We also did the three villages walk on our own, this is a easy trek right from the hotel. The do offer a guided version which I'm sure is filled with lots of interesting commentary, however it is easy enough to do on your own (they provide maps and instructions). The kids absolutely loved the rock climbing! Initially they were a bit intimidated but after conquering their initial fear they couldn't stop talking about it. All the activities we tried were wonderful and the guides and staff at the hotel couldn't do enough to make sure we enjoyed ourselves. My eldest describes the pool area as sublime, and I have to agree. It never felt too crowded (or loud from children screaming), we were always able to grab a couple of sun loungers, even when rocking up at 3pm. The water temperature was comfortable and the views were stunning. It was a perfect spot to relax and read a book after a morning of adventure. We stayed in interconnecting deluxe canyon view rooms, spacious enough for a family of five. We were on the edge of the resort (271/2), I wouldn't recommend this area as the views, although nice, are not as lovely as the main part of the resort. The location of the resort is not as remote as I initially thought as it's on the edge of a small town. However, this isn't an issue at all, it's still peaceful and tranquil with simply stunning views. Would we come again, definitely! Read less
