Shangri-La Al Husn Resort & Spa

Oman, Middle East

The hotel

Catering for adults from 16 years and above, every guest gets the royal treatment at Shangri-La Al Husn Resort & Spa, where you’re pampered with free poolside refreshments, treated to afternoon teas, and indulged with pre-dinner cocktails and canapés in the Courtyard a private evening lounge. They’ve even included VIP extras like a complimentary mini-bar and an iPod already loaded with your personalised playlist – giving you the perfect mood music for when you’re kicking off your shoes and sinking into the sands of this palatial hotel’s private cove, or sunbathing around its cliff top infinity pool. Meaning ‘castle’ in Arabic, the Al Husn stands like a citadel on a cliff, with fabulous views over the glittering Gulf of Oman. Its carved doors are guarded by sentry-like doormen, but inside it’s definitely more ‘glamorous’ than ‘fortress’, all facilities are exclusive to Al Husn guests from its regal rooms to its new luxury Hareer Spa by L'Occitance, and its elegant restaurants, with additional dining options at the neighboring sister resort Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa.

The key thing being that you can go to the other Shangri-la restaurant, beaches and use their facilities, but the visitors to the other hotels can't use the Al-Husn's. Again, restaurants are really high quality, but not extortionate. The free drinks and live music in the middle square in the early evening really sets the vibe for a chilled night. Wide selection at breakfast, while maintaining quality across the board, which isn't easy. Rooms need updating. Particularly, why can't hotel rooms have a plug by each side of the bed? Come on everybody has a mobile they charge at night. Need to upgrade. Plus no option to stream from the room TV. These low hanging, but unpicked fruit cost the hotel the full 5 starts for me. It is always good to see familiar faces and to meet new members of staff all of whom maintain the impeccable standards of care. The beach is our favourite location and it was upsetting to see the damage caused by very high waves, good to know that the beach will be restored. I hope that the turtles continue to nest as before. So once again out thanks for a great stay, we will be back again this year. Read less

I stayed here with my husband for three nights. We are checking out today to head to the desert. This hotel is overall lovely. We were given a deluxe sea view room which had fantastic views of the sea - literally stunning. We also told them it was our anniversary and they gave us a complimentary bottle of prosecco and a cake upon arrival. The pros: - complimentary afternoon tea everyday - complimentary drinks in the courtyard (limited drinks though) with a few canapés - lovely private beach - quiet as adults only! - circles beach restaurant and Capri court had great food - minibar is complimentary (save for the alcohol) and they top it up daily which is great - good selection too - great service at the beach and pool area with a cool box given to you with drinks. Also they serve berry sorbet which is a nice touch. The negatives. - there was a wedding at the resort which they should tell guests in advance of their stay. One night it was quite loud outside as the ceremony was happening on the beach. We didn’t mind that much but I can see how it can be disturbing for others. I personally think they should have done something about this to compensate guests as some parts of the resort were blocked off for the wedding. - the resort lacked abit of life - the bad weather may have contributed to this. Also, Sultan Quaboos passed away sadly during our stay so no alcohol could be served throughout the resort for three days (this is Omani law). It rained mostly all day on the day he passed. - the restaurants are expensive - the spa is extortionate - the service in the buffet breakfast restaurant was hit and miss - some of the staff didn’t really know what they were doing and needed some further training. I did inform the manager of one incident and he immediately apologised and spoke to the staff member in question. You can see they are trying to improve. Also, the food in the buffet restaurant wasnt brilliant but again really expensive. Overall it is a lovely resort and the great thing is you can use the facilities in the adjoining two Shangri La resorts. My favourite part was the private beach. There are a few improvements to be made given what you pay but I think the bad weather and passing of the Sultan contributed to the lack of life at the time we visited. I would still recommend to future guests. Read less

I have just returned from a twelve night stay at this hotel. I stayed in a de -luxe seaview room which had stunning views. Great selection for breakfast and eggs cooked freshly by chef. Complimentary afternoon tea very enjoyable but didn't always attend as I couldn't drag myself out of the sun and off the sunbeds. From 6-7 each evening complimentary drinks in Courtyard. Much appreciated!! Cool boxes with cold drinks supplied for free during the day at the pool and beach. Complimentary mini bar in room with soft drinks, beer, complimentary chocolates, crisps and nuts replenished daily again very much appreciated. I appreciated the policy of the hotel to help the environment by customers not requesting clean bedding everyday, I had my bed changed once a week as I do at home, you can have your bed changed whenever you want by putting a card on the bed in the mornings if you prefer. This is a great idea to remind us all to help the environment. The greatest thing about this hotel is the staff, Maria and Harri (harry Potter) we loved and appreciated you so much. Every single member of staff at this hotel deserves a special mention, you were all fantastic especially the pool staff, a very big thank you to you all. Only slight downside is the restaurant meals are very expensive as are alcoholic drinks such as wine, the cheapest bottle of wine was £50.00, so allow around £200 to £250.00 per night for 2 main courses and a bottle of wine. Without doubt I will be returning to this paradise of a hotel. If you want complete peace and relaxation this really is the place to go. Final comment, the weather is fantastic in December, sunny and around 24 degrees Read less
