At every level, except for the Valet/Bell staff, the stay/stay was a complete disappointment. Information is lacking. You have to ask at least twice for any basic requests. We stayed at the Ritz-Carlton to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. Over the years we have had many celebrations at various Ritz properties, and usually I have been asked a few days prior if we are celebrating a special occasion. This time nobody reached out, which we assumed was due to reduced concierge staff and the Club Lounge closure. Upon check-in, there was still no interest in understanding the reason for our stay. This would be fine if staying at a Marriott (we are Platinum, and the status was recognized upon check-in), but at the Ritz you expect a bit more personal touch. By contrast, we ran into another couple down in the Northstar Village who were celebrating their 10th anniversary at the Welk resort and raved about the special recognition and their experience there. We were pleased with our room and it was clean. We had brought plenty of sanitizing wipes, but did not need to use them on the remote control, which was wrapped in a small plastic bag (very smart!). Most lose items had been removed from the room, and this unfortunately included the safe and ice-bucket. We used the laundry bag as our ice bucket throughout our stay by keeping it in the sink. We would have preferred to have an ice bucket available that we could have easily sanitized ourselves. During the night we could smell smoke from the fires burning nearby, but during the daytime it was not noticeable. No housekeeping was provided on short stays, but we were able to get more towels and toiletries by asking the housekeeping staff. It did not feel like an upscale stay - we will wait for things to get more back to full level of service before paying top dollar again. Covid safety: masks were required in indoor public areas, but we saw plenty of people in plain sight without them. There was very little staff around to enforce. Elevator was 1-2 people or 1 family at a time. This worked well. Pool seemed to be booked at about 50% of the normal capacity and did not feel crowded. There was plenty of hand sanitizer available, and all staff members wore masks. Food: We tried to have breakfast at Manzanitas one morning, but the yellow jacket bees swarming the place made it unenjoyable. Basically the requirement to only dine outdoors and the yellow jackets is a terrible combination (not the fault of the hotel of course). We got the rest of our food to go, and ate the rest of the meals indoors. Cafe Blue had good pastries and a few food items, but we ended up getting our dinners from the Northstar Village. The Village was easy to reach with the complimentary Highlands gondola. At night many people made s'mores by the firepit, and the yellow jackets did not bother us there. A couple of other observations: - Placer county is allowing hair salons to operate outdoors, yet the spa/ salon was still completely closed. I think it was a missed opportunity for the hotel to make money (and good tips), but perhaps this had something to do with the bothersome yellow jackets as well? - Gift shop was closed, and only a few items were available for purchase in Cafe Blue and the True North store. We generally buy t-shirts and other souvenirs at the resorts we visit, so it was disappointing not to have access to most of the merchandise. I recall at the London Ritz (which I know is not managed by Marriott) they had items available for purchase at the front desk. - No sunscreen was available either as complimentary packs or for purchase at the pool. There was a pool bar, so one would think they could have sold some there? Instead we had to purchase at Cafe Blue and buy a huge bottle. This was probably due to covid restrictions, but it seems at least selling the bottles by the pool should not be too much to ask? Overall we had a nice time, but it did not feel like staying at a luxury resort. Read less

When he asked about setting up reservations in the hotel, I mentioned I was a picky eater. He have the best recommendation - that was off property. It was about what was best for me. Set up the beach Club - which I highly recommend. They taught me how to paddle board, kayak. Chef John cooked to order what I was in the mood for. The other amazing staff treated you like friends or old family. If was peaceful and amazing. I took hikes next door a north star. I can not wait to bring back my kids next year. It was amazing, even with the covid restrictions. Read less

The restaurant, bar and spa were closed due to Covid, and the pool was operating on a restricted basis, so I don't feel I can give a 5-Star review since many of the main amenities were not available. But the hotel staff was terrific and definitely made the experience in the hotel memorable. A special shout-out to Robb Morrisson and Charlie Tolotti, who run the valet service and attend to the front door. As the first people to greet you (or the last ones to see you off), they make a strong impression for the Ritz-Carlton. From offering great restaurant suggestions to making sure you have bottled water for a hike, they could not be more friendly or helpful. Considering that we got to take some great hikes, rented a motor boat and spent one day on the lake, ate at a couple of terrific nearby restaurants (Christie Hill & Pianetta - both excellent) we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. And we are looking forward to going back when everything has opened up again and we can take full advantage of all that Lake Tahoe and the Ritz-Carlton have to offer. Read less
