We booked a room last minute because we were unable to go to Yosemite due to the forest fires. The hotel was vey nice and we loved the views from the club lounge. There were lots of activities to do outside. Very family friendly hotel.

As a Platinum Marriott member, I have stayed at pretty much every Marriott property available including a variety of Ritz's across the world... This stay was BY FAR the worst hotel experience I have ever had. The room had trash from the previous guest, with personally identifiable information including their full name, email and home address... The bed sheets were dirty and soaking wet... The balcony door was broken and the handle was sitting on the floor... When we went back downstairs to let the front desk know about this, they promptly told us to get into the line, which took another 20 minutes to wait to talk to someone... Dinner took 3 hours because we couldn't get anyone to give us our check... The living room had dishes that sat out overnight, leaving guests to eat their breakfast on tables with trash and dishes from the night before... The staff was complaining to my wife and I about how annoyed they were because the hotel was so understaffed... This was just the tip of the iceberg... I even reached out to Bruce Seigel, the General Manager, left a voicemail and never heard back from him... The surrounding area is beautiful, but I'd encourage you to STAY AWAY and go elsewhere!! Please be advised that at the Ritz, families and their small kids reign supreme. This is not a place where two adults can spend a relaxing and luxurious weekend. Please be advised that at the Ritz, families and their small kids reign supreme. This is not a place where two adults can spend a relaxing and luxurious weekend. The only place free from small children was the spa -- and that includes the bars. If you're looking for a weekend where you and your family are well cared for, then consider the Ritz. If you want grown-up time, I would encourage you to look elsewhere. Even in the main restaurant Manzanita where entrees start at $40 and it's entirely too easy to end up with a large bill, kids were constantly singing, yelling, and running around. They even accommodated children's parties complete with balloons -- it made the supposedly-posh restaurant feel ore like Chuck E Cheese. Even at the Chef''s Tasting Counter (minimum $115 per person), we had children sitting next to us because they needed the room. I say all this not to denigrate families, but just to make people aware of what to expect so as to avoid my mistake of spending a large amount of money on a very stressful and unsatisfying weekend. A few other notes: rooms were equivalent of a standard Marriott, not the level of luxury I would have expected from a Ritz; this place seems like it would be heavenly for skiers given the ease of access to Northstar; staff members were all extremely attentive and helpful, although the Living Room seemed notably understaffed given its popularity; and location is really gorgeous, albeit a bit of a drive to any other activities. We looked forward in excited anticipation to our 5 day ski break at the Ritz Carlton at Northstar, Lake Tahoe. Who wouldn’t?? The Ritz Carlton is reknowned for its outstanding service, and how could you possibly spoil the incredible natural beauty of this spot? Well, somehow, The Ritz Carlton have managed to screw this destinatiom up, with impunity.... We pulled up in our rental car outside the entrance i n valet parking and quickly concluded that the three guys stood next to the entrance of the hotel must be guests just enjoying shooting the gossip while waiting for one of their ski buddies to join their gang. Well, wrong, they were actually hotel valet, and after asking them several times whether somebody was working valet, they finally sprung into action realizing that they had been rumbled. Ok, so not such a big deal, but then it became clear that the room was not ready, despite the fact that my wife had been in touch with the hotel almost daily for a week to ensure that all of the details for our stay were taken care of, including a guaranteed check in at 1pm (we arrived at 230pm). So, by about 5pm we finally got into our room, but, oh they forget to put the kids tents on our room (a $300 extra)....never mind, they’ll be ready before bed time (just....). Then, after what was a nice dinner in the house restaurant, while my youngest daughter was rolling around in the floor near the fire place, which they do at the age of 4, her foot knocked the fire cover and the metal vent at the top of the fire place fell off and landed on her head. Fortunately, no serious damage, just a bruise above her eye but no blood. A very nice lady came to the room with some ice packs to ensure our little girl was soothed, and very upset at the incident she then demanded engineering come to the room to look at what happened. He did the vent back in place, banged the fire cover to test and the vent fell off again. “Oh well, it will be ok” he says.......ummm I think not..... You get the idea. At 6am of our first morning we were all for packing up and leaving, but the allure of the natural beauty beckoned is to stay. To say the service in this place is deplorable is almost too kind. When you sit down for food or drink, you almost have to go to the kitchen or behind the bar to get the attention of staff to serve you.....I am convinced that Motel 6 offers a better quality of service than this Ritz Carlton. But then, it’s full, and why you may ask? Well take a look at the surroundings. However, it is unacceptable that a hotel of such reputation should allow such lack lustre service because they know that they can simply rely on the natural beauty of its setting to draw in the clientele. This is not what we expect of s hotel brand of this reputation. Ritz Carlton should be ashamed of itself for allowing this to continue and I hope, if they read this review they will take note and act. Based upon this experience, no matter how beautiful this place is - I recommend you go to Snowmass..... Read less
