I had arrived to the hotel with my pants full of shittake (Check my last post on THE Facebook to see reason why.) But I am indefatigable, so I bid my driver adieu and squished squashed through the gates of hell into what they call a "5 star hotel." To make a long story short, there were no moist towelettes.

I’ve been staying at this place for 17 years but this time was my last time. I guess I’ve been lucky in the past with rooms and upgrades, because this time, the room was shockingly basic. Small, no view, uncomfortable beds.. the place isn’t aging well. From one of my favorite hotels to just another overpriced Boston rip-off. Time to move on.

This place is seriously understaffed, so if you are looking for efficient and quick checkout, or prompt delivery of your car from the valet so that you can get to your appointments on time, keep looking. This morning when I came down to check-out, there was only ONE person on duty to handle ALL guests and their needs. I waited several minutes just to get his attention as he completely ignored me while he performed concierge services for the guest ahead of me in line. I had been told at at check-in to allow 15 minutes for the return of my car from valet, so I budgeted for that. But I did not budget for over half an hour, which is what it took to get my car, making me extremely anxious about heading out into traffic and getting to my meeting on time. They told me the delay was due to two other guests who asked for their cars ahead of me - so this is a hotel that cannot handle getting just three cars from the valet in less than 35 minutes! Why? Because only ONE person does this job, and the cars are parked off-property. It takes 15 minutes PER CAR to get a car. So if you happen to be third in line...good luck getting to your meeting on time. I agree with reviewer below me that staff were also strangely indifferent. Service was just OK, nothing more. Water pressure in my 10th-floor room shower was poor, which made washing my hair more difficult. Bathroom sink fixtures also noisy. Overall, the furnishings were kind of beat up looking, and I think this is a property that is overdue for some renovating. The front entrance is also tiny and tired looking, and the air of this place is one of previous glory, but perhaps not doing too well these days. I will stay at the more traditional hotels like Four Seasons or Lowes in the future as I know they will be more up to date and fresh in terms of furnishings, staffed appropriately and offer better services like express checkout. My boyfriend and I stayed here and were excited to spend a night in the city. With such great proximity to wonderful and lively parts of Boston, we thought our time at the XV Beacon would be enjoyable. How wrong we were. Our troubles began before we even checked into the hotel. After a long and tedious drive from southern New England into Boston, the least we expected was help bringing luggage into the hotel. No such luck. The doorman seemed annoyed, even disgusted, with the fact that he had to get the door for us...this should have been telling about how the rest of our stay would be, but we brushed it off as simply a disgruntled employee. We encountered more of this at the front desk, where we were barely greeted by the front desk attendant, and practically had to beg for him to describe some of the amenities of the property (I always thought hotel orientations came included as part of the check-in, but this gentleman seemed to think otherwise)... We were exhausted, so we went straight upstairs to our room....and were further disappointed. The room was dark and dingy, with cheap furniture and an outside view of a dumpster that really was a visual representation for our impression of the property. Combined with the fact that the room was boiling hot (I get that we were here in winter, but this was unbearable...we were sweating and slept without sheets, it was so hot), we were upset that we spent so much money to stay in a "luxury" hotel, just to be uncomfortable and unhappy. To top it all off, we attempted to use their wifi to watch a movie (if only to get our minds off the disappointing state of the hotel), and were even more dissatisfied with the fact the wifi would not work. Of course, our efforts to get support from the front desk staff were met with simply ignorant responses, as they could not find a solution. The best part of this hotel was checking out. After such a tumultuous stay and clear showing from the staff that the guests are not their first priority, I urge others to stay far, far away from this hotel. There are several other hotels in the area that offer an even more comfortable stay at a far less "luxury" price. We will never stay here again. Read less

Overall a pretty excellent place to stay: clean room, friendly staff, excellent location. But the Boston XV has a big problem: the rooms are fitted with fireplaces whose gas pilot lights burn around the clock - including in the height of summer, when we stayed. These pilot lights emit substantial amounts of heat into the room; forcing the A/C units to work overtime to compensate. A call to the reception revealed that these pilot lights cannot be turned off. For anyone who gives a damn about their Co2 emissions, this is complete and utter madness. Leaving this review in the hope that the XV Beacon realize that their customers today place a great deal of weight on this kind of thing - and that this kind of energy use is completely unacceptable in 2019. Will you please sort this out, XV Beacon? Read less
