40 years ago my wife and I honeymooned at this hotel (Sundial Inn at the time). We spent the night at L'Auberge last week and were absolutely amazed at the hospitality, attention to preserving the ambiance and charm of the old hotel, the staff, the food and everything about the hotel. We'll be coming back again!

Don't stay here. Rooms are located right next to a courtyard with zero sound insulation. Service is extremely poor: expect to be treated lower priority than the dining guests. The rooms are basic. Choose another hotel, which is actually a hotel. This is not a Relais Chateaux experience.

We stayed here for our 26th anniversary and ate dinner at Aubergine that evening. The Auberge is full of character and has a welcoming and attentive staff. The dinner with wine pairing was absolutely delicious, and the pairings were perfect. Service was great, and Chef personally served a few courses himself as well which was a great touch.

We were originally supposed to visit at the end of September but we had to delay our trip due to the California fires. When I called to reserve I was fortunate to be speaking with Alicia. She took the time out to explain the lay out of the hotel to me and even went out of her way to send pictures. Later when we actually were able to book the hotel- there was only room 25 available. The room itself was cute, but there were no AC in the room and we were unable to have the windows open bc people were literally having dinner outside of our window and we could hear their conversations. Also I had to ask a couple of times for the shampoo and the conditioner in the room to be replenished. You also need to specify the time you want to have breakfast the night before which honestly when you’re on vacation- you want things to be more spontaneous. The location of the hotel is great and the staff is friendly. We particularly enjoyed chatting with Edwin and Joshua. They both went above and beyond. I think if we had stayed during a cooler time- the lack of AC wouldn’t have been as big a deal. I hope you enjoy Carmel if you decide to visit! Read less
