Myself, my husband and our friends had an amazing stay at the Monterey Plaza! We both had ocean view rooms with a balcony, and those views can't be beat. Watching otters playing in the water below while we drank our morning coffee on the balcony is something I'll never forget. The hotel also has a new restaurant, Coastal Kitchen, and our experience there was nothing short of amazing. The chef's tasting menu is unlike any other; truly unique courses that embraced the coastal setting and highlighted local ingredients. It was impossible to pick a favorite course - everything from the starters to the dessert were delicious. Each of the six courses were paired with a wine that further enhanced the flavors. The service was outstanding and the price was surprisingly approachable. I can't wait to go back to the hotel and the restaurant - thank you for an incredible weekend away! Read less

I'll start with the positives, and there were a lot! - The location is awesome - The views from the lobby and decks are beautiful - The staff was wonderful. Every single person we met was so nice and helpful. But unfortunately all of that was counteracted by the negatives, which mainly involved our room. I understood that I had reserved the least expensive tier of room, so I wasn't expecting to get the best. But... Our room was basically in the basement, overlooking a parking lot/alley, right next to the trash and recycling cans. We were woken up in the early morning by the loud trash trucks and the crashing of cans and bottles into the recycling truck, basically five feet from our window. It was pretty awful. Also, the room was small and packed with oddly oversized furniture. It was actually impossible for us to even pull our suitcases into the room without first rearranging some of the furniture! I could have ignored all that, except for the biggest problem... I was traveling with two teens (boy and girl) who cannot share a bed. I chose this hotel because the website specifically states that they have cots available for the rooms. But when I called down to get one, I was told that my room was too small to accommodate one (according to fire codes). So my teenage son spent two nights sleeping on the FLOOR of a luxury hotel, where I spent an absolute fortune. Sigh. I guess my overall advice is: If you can afford the top tier of rooms, this is probably a great choice. If not, you're going to feel like you're on a luxury cruise ship but stuck sleeping in bunks with the crew. If your budget doesn't allow for the oceanfront suites, I'd try for some of the other (wonderful looking) inns and hotels nearby. Read less

On-site restaurant, bar and cafe are all excellent. The restaurant can execute excellent food consistently with great service and view. The cafe got nice coffee. The bar comes with a good selection of options and good strong drinks. Also a family friendly hotel that keeps the little ones feel welcomed. Live music in the lobby was wonderful. The new year count down to both EST and PST was very thoughtful. The location is also unbeatable. In the middle of everything but is also easy to get in and out of the premises. We will definitely come back! Read less

Wow! Not only is this the most beautiful hotel at which I have ever stayed, It is also the most hospitable. Throughout my entire stay I was greeted with stunning views and sincere kindness. Even with its grandeur, the Monterey Plaza Hotel and Spa feels like an intimate family run hotel.
