Oakland Marriott City Center

Oakland, California Coast

The hotel

A gentle nod to Oakland’s jazz and blues scene welcomes you to Marriott Oakland City Center. But the modern tailoring of its spacious guestrooms, the Californian flair of its dining venues, the cool urban styling of its outdoor pool deck and fitness studio, and the fabulous downtown setting are all quick to distract you. California-inspired dishes, and wine lists infused with Napa and Sonoma vintages are the perfect pairing for evenings in at the hotel’s Level Two restaurant and Twelve Bar Lounge. But dining out’s easy too, with Chinatown’s Asian flavours a block away, and Jack London Square’s waterfront eateries around 6 blocks away. Mere metres from the nearest BART station, you can even be whisked off to the world-class restaurants (and sightseeing) of San Francisco in just 12 minutes.

No smile or polite greeting. First words were "hold on I am finishing something" and barely looked at me. He didnt make small talk or asked what brings me to the hotel. Doesnt ask if I need help with luggage or if I had any questions. I understand people have bad days but this guy seemed like he hated his job. Whenever I left the hotel valet was in their office on their phones and not paying attention to the backed up car lines. Marriott is known for their amazing service but after this stay I am thinking they are a franchise that just wants to take the benefit of Marriott name. The rooms were beautifully remodeled and the bed was extremely comfortable. Hopefully management does some retraining because they can be the go to property if they knock out of the park with service. Read less

I stayed here once before and enjoyed my stay here. I arrived in my upgraded Avis Dodge Charger RT RWD Hemi engine muscle car. When I arrived to the hotel I self-parked in the adjacent multi-level parking garage for $45 charged to my hotel bill. Another Dodge Charger RT RWD Hemi engine muscle car entered the self-parking garage at the same time as me. We rev up our engines as we both started up the spiral entrance ramp. He was behind me. It was lots of fun. We both parked in the same area of level 3 and exchanged our mutual respect for each other appreciating our respective white Dodge Chargers. It turns out they were Marriott hotel employees. I used my Bonvoy app to order my down pillows before I arrived to the hotel, which I greatly appreciated as usual. This was my fourth time to order down pillows during my recent Bonvoy stays. The Hilton or IHG apps do not allow me to order down pillows. My check-in went so smoothly, because as you can see from my pics I was upgraded to a very large king bed suite room 525 for $291, inclusive of all taxes and fees. As a platinum elite member I had access to the M Club lounge on the second floor for breakfast (6:30-9AM), Hors d’oeuvres (5:30-7:30PM) and dessert (7:30-9PM). I was able to access the lounge anytime from 6AM to10PM. The best part of this hotel is the prime location in the center of downtown Oakland, which is where my business meetings were. I used my Bonvoy app to check-out of the hotel, which is also convenient. The IHG app does not allow room check-out. I would definitely return here again especially if I can confirm a room for under $200. Read less

That said, the room was nice and clean. The staff was not very present (queues everywhere, all the time) but friendly when finally here to help. Read less

We booked our room, king size, bay view, high floor, paying extra for all of it in advance of our arrival, but when we got there they had sold our room again to someone else. They didnt even tell us there was a problem with the room or reservation, just tried to give us a tiny little closet on the 8th floor and hope we didnt notice! Good lord this is not what I expect from a Marriott at this high of a price room!!!! The room we stayed at was so loud from the ghetto blasting bass of the street noice and the shape of the room was triangular so it made all 200 square foot of it look even smaller. Can you imagine that they had to put the TV off to the left corner of the room, impossible to see from the bed, and since there wasnt enough room for a chair, it was virtually unusable!!! They offered us $50, we were so mad and got no sleep!!!! Seriously, DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL!!!!! IT WAS BAD ENOUGH THAT THEY GAVE OUR ROOM AWAY, BUT THE ALTERNATIVE ROOM WAS NOT JUST NOT AS NICE, IT WAS LITERALLY WORSE THAN STAYING AT MOTEL 6. Read less

On our last night of a vacation to California, we chose the Marriott City Center because we had an early flight out of Oakland the next morning but didn't want to stay too close to the airport. The Marriott City Center was a good choice as it took us only 20 minutes to get to the airport rental car return, including the stop for gas along the way! Our room had been relatively recently remodeled, but I don't know if that is true for all the rooms at the hotel. Regardless, ours was very comfortable and had the modern conveniences (e.g., USB ports) one expects at quality hotels these days. The only negative on the room is that we thought the bed was on the wrong wall, because it wasn't easy to watch the flat screen TV when seated on the bed. Construction work is ongoing in the lobby, so it can be a little noisy at the lounge on the second level when they are doing construction. I read other reviews complaining about the hotel not being in the best area. We didn't find it to be much different from any hotel in a large city. We never felt unsafe, and we walked to nearby restaurants for dinner. Read less
