Oakland Marriott City Center

Oakland, California Coast

The hotel

A gentle nod to Oakland’s jazz and blues scene welcomes you to Marriott Oakland City Center. But the modern tailoring of its spacious guestrooms, the Californian flair of its dining venues, the cool urban styling of its outdoor pool deck and fitness studio, and the fabulous downtown setting are all quick to distract you. California-inspired dishes, and wine lists infused with Napa and Sonoma vintages are the perfect pairing for evenings in at the hotel’s Level Two restaurant and Twelve Bar Lounge. But dining out’s easy too, with Chinatown’s Asian flavours a block away, and Jack London Square’s waterfront eateries around 6 blocks away. Mere metres from the nearest BART station, you can even be whisked off to the world-class restaurants (and sightseeing) of San Francisco in just 12 minutes.

Stayed here for 6 days, and enjoyed the location (close to family in Berkeley). The room was a good size with a mini fridge we kept water, apples and breakfast items in. The staff was, well, we had good and bad experiences with the front desk staff, but in the end their manager, Kristoffer, took care of all of our issues. Shout out to Becky in the Iron & Oak restaurant ~ she took good care of us for multiple meals. Yes, our king room had older tile in the shower. But the bathroom and room were kept very clean, esp in this time of COVID. Yes, the ramps in the parking garage are tight. But we didn’t have to circle endlessly for parking, and we always felt safe. Blessings to the couple that had their wedding and reception during our visit! Read less
Image of the Tripadvisor rating super clean but a little pricey

This hotel is in a great location, and the room was super clean and pretty stylish! The only thing that I would say is the price seemed a bit much for what it is. $230 for a weekend. We looked at some of the prices nearby after checkin and they were much more competitive. That said, really good service and great job with the room cleaners!

I got this hotel for a work trip as this was closest to the workplace I was going to be basing myself for a week, plus, it would be an easy drive there without having to navigate the sometimes confusing downtown streets. The hotel served its purpose - a decent room with good air conditioning. It didn't have a refrigerator in it and the space was cramped compared to more modern Marriott properties. That said, the room was dated compared to some of the other properties. Wi-fi was good and the city view was lovely from where I was at. Conveniently located near the BART station if you wanted to go around BUT when I was there, it was still peak of all COVID lockdowns so there wasn't much and everything I ate was delivered to me. I can imagine what a great situation this would have been in better times. What I did not like - there was some (probably) drunk guy banging on the door of the room a few doors down at 4AM. Hallways reeked of marijuana at times, and 2 of the 4 nights, some cops came in the lobby for some incident, then a 911 call. Yes, people are gonna say "It's Oakland" but I always give places the benefit of the doubt. Read less

Pretty average full service Marriott. The lounge/restaurant was good for breakfast and a drink with colleagues at the end of the work day. Below average customer service otherwise. When I checked in I noticed a very strong cigarette smell in the room’s bathroom. There’s no smoke detector in there, so it presented an opportunity for someone to smoke without getting caught. I reported this to the front desk on the first day of a 3 day stay. Nothing was done about it. It was a very busy workweek for me, so I didn’t get to follow up. I complained to Marriott afterwards and received a generic apology. Would recommend trying another hotel if you have the option. Next time I’m Oakland I plan to try the Moxy (I’m loyal to Marriott when I can be). Read less
