The hotel

The very essence of the golden age of Hollywood glamour, the Hotel Shangri-La has been welcoming guests since 1939. An Art Deco treasure, sumptuous guest rooms and suites offer iconic views of the ocean or the city and come very well-equipped indeed. When you can tear yourself away, there’s the poolside to relax by – treat yourself to a private cabana and it becomes a real retreat. There are plenty of restaurants on your doorstep but the hotel’s own should not be missed. Featuring classically trained and creative chefs, feast on the freshest local produce, handpicked from the weekly Santa Monica Farmers Market whilst admiring views of the Pacific & Palisades Park. Pre-dinner, take the elevator all the way to the top for drinks at Onyx Rooftop Bar offering world-class sunsets as well as cocktails late evenings. Santa Monica Pier is a 10-minute walk away but should you wish to explore further, the metro is also a 10-minute walk which will connect you to Hollywood, downtown and more quickly and affordably too.

I stayed at the Shangri-La Santa Monica last Monday, and I had one of the worst welcome I've ever had at a hotel. I got there around 1:30 and gave my name to the person at the front desk. Her name was Laurie. Without even checking on the computer, she coldly told me that they don't do check ins before 3PM. As someone who travels a lot for work and who had paid over $500 per night to stay at this hotel, I was surprised by this cold response, so I insisted a little bit. I asked if they would perhaps let me check in at 2PM, and still she told me no, and she told me I could leave my bags and go wait by the pool. I went by the pool and 10 minutes later, my co-worker, who is a white woman, showed up and was allowed to check in. She even later told me that there was another white couple in front of her that was allowed to check in. My co-worker texted me, so I joined her at the front desk while she was getting checked in. So I asked Laurie again, "since my co-worker got a room, can I get one as well?" Only then did she check and "found" a room. This was very upsetting and ruined my experience at this hotel. I confronted her the next morning and asked her why she treated me that way and she claimed she was still learning how to use the system, which makes no sense, since she knew how to use the system to check in my co-workers 10 minutes after me. Laurie is also the one who checked me out at the end of my stay and obviously did not bother to ask how my stay was. As a black man, I would never feel comfortable going back to this hotel because of this experience. The black employees were nicer to me, and I am pretty sure they would not have treated me the way Laurie did. I left a review for the GM and have not heard anything yet. Read less

Many amenities listed were not available. The room was not ready at check in. The “gourmet” kitchen was a joke, do not be fooled. The location was nice, very easy to walk to the beach and get to the pier.

The location of this Hotel is great! It sits just across the beach, steps away from all the shops and trendy restaurants in the trendy downtown Santa Monica area. However, the service at this place is horrible and at $500+ per night, I would NOT recommend this place to anyone. We complained that the mattress on our bed was sinking. As a result, we didn't sleep very well and had complained to the front desk about this. Unfortunately, the person at the front desk was the HR manager, Lori Gohberg, as the regular front desk person wasn't around. Lori advised us that she will relate our issue and message us back sometime during the day once resolved. She didn't. When we got back to the hotel, we inquired that status of our issue, the night front desk did not know about the issue. When we asked to speak to a manager, the front desk person called his supervisor - Sherita Young, guest services manager - who refused to speak to us and hung up on us. So, in the end, we had to sleep in a broken mattress for a 2nd day in a row. This place charges the same rate as a 5 star hotel would but make no mistake, you will be treated like you don't matter. Avoid this hotel! Read less

We were disappointed overall with the quality and decor - didn't live up to the pictures on the website and the bed and sofabed in our room were quite uncomfortable. We had to call maintenance to our room as we couldn't use the taps in the shower - these were then replaced but the sink was completed chipped and damaged.
