Hotel Shangri-LA

Santa Monica, Los Angeles

The hotel

The very essence of the golden age of Hollywood glamour, the Hotel Shangri-La has been welcoming guests since 1939. An Art Deco treasure, sumptuous guest rooms and suites offer iconic views of the ocean or the city and come very well-equipped indeed. When you can tear yourself away, there’s the poolside to relax by – treat yourself to a private cabana and it becomes a real retreat. Spa treatments are also available poolside – the ultimate in luxury. There are plenty of restaurants on your doorstep but the hotel’s own should not be missed. Featuring classically trained and creative chefs, feast on the freshest local produce, handpicked from the weekly Santa Monica Farmers Market whilst admiring views of the Pacific & Palisades Park. Pre-dinner, take the elevator all the way to the top for drinks at Onyx Rooftop Bar offering world-class sunsets as well as cocktails late evenings. Santa Monica Pier is a 10-minute walk away but should you wish to explore further, the metro is also a 10-minute walk which will connect you to Hollywood, downtown and more quickly and affordably too.

We stayed there from April 29 to May 1, after checking out I had noticed a couple days later that they charged my card for $55 USD with out explanation. I called to find out what the charge was for and they stated Mini Bar use. We did not use anything from the Mini Bar, so the person I spoke with sent an email to the manager of beverages asking for this to be looked into. I was copied on the email and almost two weeks have passed with no response. I called my booking agent to see if there was anything that could be done and they called the hotel and were told that the Mini Bar had been cleaned out and that I could dispute this with my credit card company. For starters, all of the ridiculously priced items in that mini bar which is a tray on the counter, would have added up to over $150, and they could not itemize what was taken. We didn't take anything from the Mini Bar. Reading other reviews now, "take it up with your credit card company" seems to be a standard reply by the staff at the Hotel Shangri-La. This group is not to be trusted with your credit card number! Read less

I think we were the wrong age group for this hotel. The roof top terrace is a magnet for young (20-30 age) party goers and as a couple in our 50’s we were probably the oldest there, although it is a great space with great views and we wish we could have enjoyed it more. I think we were the wrong age group for this hotel. The roof top terrace is a magnet for young (20-30 age) party goers and as a couple in our 50’s we were probably the oldest there, although it is a great space with great views and we wish we could have enjoyed it more. Our room had been recently redecorated and was plush, with an excellent range of high end toiletries. However, the bath was very deep and not safe to climb in and out of to use the bath or shower. Our room had the biggest supply of drinks in the minibar that I have ever seen. However, we didn’t stay there for the minibar and this took up so much room next to the bed that we struggled to find room to place even a mobile phone on the bedside table! The room was also very small for us. We were on a 2 weeks tour of California and effectively living out of suitcases, but there was no space to lay our 2 suitcases. If you travel light then this may not be a problem for you. Our room was classed as a City View room and we were not offered any option to change/upgrade this. The view was disappointing for a sea front hotel and it would have been interesting to see what a sea view room looked like. We didn’t have a chance to use the pool area but it looked very clean and enticing and we wish we had more time to try it out. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming every time we returned to the hotel from our trips out. Read less

From the second I walked in I fell in love with The Shangri La. The customer service was amazing everyone was so nice and helpful. My room was very clean and the view from the balcony was so beautiful, it overlooked the ocean. The restaurant in the lobby served delicious food and the service their was outstanding as well, after I decided to check out the rooftop bar and the view from there was even better. I got a drink and enjoyed myself very much. Overall I definitely would r4ccom3nd staying here and cannot wait to come back Read less

Directly across the street is the beach. Great hotels and restaurants all within a block or so from the hotel. Shangri-La has great views from their rooftop bar... worth checking out. If you pay for an ocean view room, be sure to ask for a high floor. Or if you are a light sleeper, ask for a high floor. I was on the 2nd floor and was miserable most of the night with the loud noises on the street level... groups of people talking loud, especially after coming out of bars late, the cars, etc... Not something to keep me from visiting this hotel again, so long as I'm guaranteed a high floor. Read less
