Hotel Shangri-LA

Santa Monica, Los Angeles

The hotel

The very essence of the golden age of Hollywood glamour, the Hotel Shangri-La has been welcoming guests since 1939. An Art Deco treasure, sumptuous guest rooms and suites offer iconic views of the ocean or the city and come very well-equipped indeed. When you can tear yourself away, there’s the poolside to relax by – treat yourself to a private cabana and it becomes a real retreat. There are plenty of restaurants on your doorstep but the hotel’s own should not be missed. Featuring classically trained and creative chefs, feast on the freshest local produce, handpicked from the weekly Santa Monica Farmers Market whilst admiring views of the Pacific & Palisades Park. Pre-dinner, take the elevator all the way to the top for drinks at Onyx Rooftop Bar offering world-class sunsets as well as cocktails late evenings. Santa Monica Pier is a 10-minute walk away but should you wish to explore further, the metro is also a 10-minute walk which will connect you to Hollywood, downtown and more quickly and affordably too.

I stayed here for my birthday weekend, and have never had such a bad experience. From the very beginning, the staff treated me badly. My card wouldn’t work in the card reader, and rather than find a way around it they acted like I just couldn’t afford to stay there. I ended up walking to the nearest bank to withdrawal $1,000 for the deposit. The room itself was nice, and the pool- aesthetically pleasing but that’s the only positive part about my stay. My friend and I went out for dinner and arrived back around 8:30 pm. The front desk woman who had spent over an hour with me at check-in somehow forgot who I was when there was less than 20 people staying there. We were stopped from going upstairs and again treated like we shouldn’t be staying there even after showing my room key. Shortly after we walked down to the pool area to take bday pics and now a male employee rudely told us we wouldn’t be doing so. That the pool closed early due to COVID. There isn’t even signs of the regular pool hours, even though online it says 10, and the front desk never mentioned anything about changed hours. I took my dog out around 11pm and again was questioned when I went to go back up to my room, but they had nothing to say about the blaring rap music and weed smell even going out on to the street from the window in a party room on the 2nd floor. In the morning, our iced lattes took over an hour to get to us, and I’ll remind you there was less than 20 people there. I saw a total of 5 other people my entire stay. Total joke and ruined my birthday. I live in LA and take staycation weekends often, Blogging and posting the hotels and resorts on my Instagram, and this was my least favorite stay of all. Read less

We had the radical idea of having a staycation for our anniversary and decided to go across town to the beach and the Hotel Shangri-La. Even before arriving, we had excellent service accommodating our request for an ocean-view room and instantly answering any questions we had so we were super-prepared upon arrival. Hotel Shangri-La is a classic art deco-style building in every sense. It has a unique structure and all the details down to the old-fashioned marker indicating what floor the elevator was on, which we never got tired of looking at. The room had a ton of character, loads of drawers and storage space, including in the bathroom. The light fixtures are gorgeous and unique, the toiletries are from L'Occitane, and the view is to die for. The tub is made for bubble baths, plus it has two shower heads that you can run at the same time. We pretty much never left the premises. The restaurant, which during the pandemic is wholly outside offers an extensive menu, which is also served poolside. We were either at the sidewalk tables or by the pool. It was super relaxing, completely rejuvenating, and if we wanted a change of pace, 3rd Street Promenade is three blocks away and the beach is across the street. Highly recommend taking advantage of this time and booking yourself into the Shangri-La because once this pandemic lifts, you won't be able to get into this destination hotel, its artistic poolside or its scenic rooftop. The service was horrible, but I guess you could say the view made up for the lack there of. I did not like that the patios were not secluded. Anyone on the same floor could walk right up to your room. It was only divided by plants. The best part of the stay I would have to say is the view....and maybe the only good part.

We chose this hotel based on price promotion. The actual Location which was directly by the ocean. But mostly for the fabulous Poolside area. All which were great. We had a lovely getaway weekend. Thanks so much.

Aside from the fact that the rooms are poorly designed, the bath tub is tiny, and the hotel bed and sheets felt old and crumply... my stay which started off as okay, became a nightmare. I valeted my car around 3:30 pm. The next morning upon check out I called the valet and they told me my tire was flat. The Valet said he knew about it at 9 pm the previous night and told the hotel receptionist but no one told me. When I asked her why she didn't tell me when she knew, she said she was going to but didn't. And so I had to spend hours the following morning figuring out how to get my car towed and fixed. I had to literally cancel two Zoom meetings on Thursday morning. No one from the hotel asked if they could do anything or even asked if I was okay. All of this could have been avoided had I been told the previous night that my tire was flat. They claim I may have gotten the tire punctured on my way over to the hotel, but that's not possible because it's a brand new 2020 BMW i3 that has tire sensors that notify me when air is leaking (and it didn't), there was no leak so the puncture happened under the hotel's supervision. I e-mailed the staff and then the owner, and no one has gotten back to me. No apology. Nothing. Your money is better spent elsewhere. Read less
