Hotel Shangri-LA

Santa Monica, Los Angeles

The hotel

The very essence of the golden age of Hollywood glamour, the Hotel Shangri-La has been welcoming guests since 1939. An Art Deco treasure, sumptuous guest rooms and suites offer iconic views of the ocean or the city and come very well-equipped indeed. When you can tear yourself away, there’s the poolside to relax by – treat yourself to a private cabana and it becomes a real retreat. There are plenty of restaurants on your doorstep but the hotel’s own should not be missed. Featuring classically trained and creative chefs, feast on the freshest local produce, handpicked from the weekly Santa Monica Farmers Market whilst admiring views of the Pacific & Palisades Park. Pre-dinner, take the elevator all the way to the top for drinks at Onyx Rooftop Bar offering world-class sunsets as well as cocktails late evenings. Santa Monica Pier is a 10-minute walk away but should you wish to explore further, the metro is also a 10-minute walk which will connect you to Hollywood, downtown and more quickly and affordably too.

We stayed at the hotel during the LA Marathon. All of the hotel staff from registration, housekeeping , to valet were amazing. Their friendliness and willingness to accommodate our needs was first class. I will definitely recommend it to others.

The staff is so incredible, and I love the location. It really is great. However, there are too many inconveniences to overlook. I stayed here for the LA Marathon just this past weekend (one night stay, Sat-Sun). Check-in was great - we were able to get our room early, we had the free breakfast buffet included for the following day, and Marta (I can't remember the spelling!) was fantastic. She provided info about Santa Monica, and even told us that we were upgraded from a regular king or queen room to an "Executive Suite." My one request on my reservation was a king bed. When we got to our "upgraded" room, sadly it was a queen. Fine - I guess bed size with my room selection was not a guarantee. We were also given an ocean view which was nice. The suite we were given had an extra weird little room with a desk, which is I guess is what classified it as a suite. The bath and shower water knobs were incredibly hard to turn on, the bathroom sink water smelled incredibly strongly of sulfur, and the toilet flush button mechanism was falling off. A huge annoyance about the weekend was that I asked for a wakeup call at 4am Sunday. The call didn't come until 5am - I'm assuming this is because of daylight savings time, but still. The hotel should have been prepared for that. The hotel was kind enough to extend my checkout by a couple of hours because of the inconvenience. Because of our ocean view room, we were kept awake by the noise of the metal fences being set up along Ocean Blvd starting at 11pm and going until who knows when. I called for ear plugs and someone brought them up within five minutes. Overall, I really enjoyed the location and staff. If you're running the LA Marathon, this place is a great choice (easy to get to post-race). They had little snack boxes for runners after the race, and having the pool available was a treat. However, it's super expensive and the rooms are basically falling apart. Read less

Gorgeous architectural gem. Pool area lovely. The renovation is partial - in that the charm of this Deco landmark is retained but the rooms have certain modern upgrades. Not a slick contemporary design. My room had amazing views of Ocean.
