Hotel Shangri-LA

Santa Monica, Los Angeles

The hotel

The very essence of the golden age of Hollywood glamour, the Hotel Shangri-La has been welcoming guests since 1939. An Art Deco treasure, sumptuous guest rooms and suites offer iconic views of the ocean or the city and come very well-equipped indeed. When you can tear yourself away, there’s the poolside to relax by – treat yourself to a private cabana and it becomes a real retreat. There are plenty of restaurants on your doorstep but the hotel’s own should not be missed. Featuring classically trained and creative chefs, feast on the freshest local produce, handpicked from the weekly Santa Monica Farmers Market whilst admiring views of the Pacific & Palisades Park. Pre-dinner, take the elevator all the way to the top for drinks at Onyx Rooftop Bar offering world-class sunsets as well as cocktails late evenings. Santa Monica Pier is a 10-minute walk away but should you wish to explore further, the metro is also a 10-minute walk which will connect you to Hollywood, downtown and more quickly and affordably too.

I would still recommend this hotel because I don’t believe it would be the same experience for everyone and it is so close to the ocean which is nice. Read less

The Hotel was in the perfect location. Easy to walk to the beach, 3rd st Promenade, local bars and shops. Staff is super helpful and friendly. The hotel has a nice bar and seating area that’s lively and is dog friendly.

I was really looking forward to this visit. Art Deco! My favorite. Ocean front view! Wonderful. I arrived and that’s when it went downhill. The parking staff at valet is snobbish and barbaric. I drive a luxury car, so I t wasn’t like the car was embarrassing to have parked in their first spot. It didn’t matter to them that I had a blue card. They said I could not park in their blue space. They made me park elsewhere. I reported this to the front desk. She looked at me as if I had two heads insinuating I don’t have a disability. Asked for the manager. Not available of course. I booked a suite. It was not as pictured, but it was the correct room number so I let that go. Stairs at entry might be a challenge for disabled travelers. Great air conditioning— the room was freezing. The room itself was lovely and clean in appearance until you got to the jacuzzi tub. I got in, sat down to relax after my long drive, turned on the jets and a bunch of black goop poured out all over me. I got out as fast as I could, but having this disability made it much slower than I would have liked. I had to shower to get someone else’s hair clumps and grime off of me. The fireplace didn’t work. I believe that there may be an issue with a city ordinance about it so don’t expect it to function as shown on their website. This is not a hotel that is on the water. It’s across the street, it has incredible whitewater views from the 6th floor. The balcony was large and nicely furnished. Tried the manager the next morning, but she was off that day too, hence this review. I really wanted to love this place. They need to thoroughly clean their rooms and take the ADA rules much more seriously. They also need to put some money into updates. Only one cramped service elevator worked. If you are in a wheelchair, please do yourself a favor and book elsewhere. I’m simply disgusted. For what I paid, I’d expect better. Read less

Due to COVID, I avoided the inviting pool, but I did spend much of my time in their in-room hot tub. Their staff was very friendly, and the delicious breakfast always arrived with a smile. My stay and Shangri-la gives me fond memory of Santa Monica even in the bleak COVID times, and I'm hoping to revisit in better times. Read less
