Viceroy Santa Monica

Santa Monica, Los Angeles

The hotel

We’re suckers for unassuming packages that reveal treasures within, and this luxurious Santa Monica hotel, just a block’s walk from the Pacific, is a perfect example. It’s simple exterior and minimal signage give nothing away, but step beyond its bright green hedgerows and you’ll find a quietly confident and upscale oasis that positively oozes sophistication. From the modern elegance of its rooms and suites via the library (finished in shades of lemon and dark wood) to private dining cabanas, two heated pools and the Cast Restaurant and Lounge, serving healthy, flavourful cuisine that comes with a side order of sustainability, you just know you’re in excellent hands from the moment you check in.

Visited Santa Monica for a friend’s birthday. Because it was her celebration she decided on the hotel. We booked it via Hotline and it was $850 for two nights, so I can only imagine what it costs normally. My flight was scheduled to get in very late and my friend left my name on the reservation as she knew she’d probably be asleep. Issue #1: The front desk employee never added me. My friend was sound asleep when I arrived. Security refused to let me up. Luckily I had the Hotwire information and had them add my name. After a one hour standoff I was let up with a glass of champagne. The hotel’s apology? Four drink tickets. Issue #2: If you’re 4 stars or more and commanding a price as much as the Viceroy I expect your food to be excellent. One morning’s order of pancakes and sausage and an order of a cocktail and an appetizer later that day cost me well over $70 and it was very mediocre to say the least. Overall I just didn’t find this hotel worth the cost. You’re essentially paying for the location - which is within walking distance of the beach and many attractions - but I’ve experienced much better service, decor, amenities and food at something as midway as a Hyatt. Next time I’ll just Airbnb. Read less

Beautiful hotel to stay in from check-in (complimentary drink) to check-out (rushing to check me out assist me into the taxi). Excellence service from the bar, restaurant and concierge. Comfortable, cozy and charming place to stay.

The beds were very uncomfortable and the pool area did not get much sun, and the breakfast was not very good BUT location was good, everything was clean... They had bikes to use which was nice and BJ the Bellhop was amazing. So nice, so friendly and so helpful.

We booked this hotel and I got a vast chunk of money off this hotel by using my free night from hotels.com which was very handy. In the end we only paid £243.74 for a night which sounds a lot but given the area it was reasonable. We arrived at the hotel and used the valet parking as we needed to go to the airport the next day and couldn't be bothered lugging our cases down the road for a cheaper multi story for one night. The room unfortunately wasn't ready for us to check in but as it was late they gave us $50 drink tokens as an apology which we used and kept us busy. The big sad point for me was that the pools were being maintained and couldn't be used which they didn't declare on the website. I wasn't happy as we wanted one last sit by the pool before being on a plane for 10 hours. I did mention this on check out so they didn't charge a resort fee which is just as well really. Still, I would have booked somewhere else had I known. The room itself was facing the pool and was quiet. It was fairly small but very comfortable. The hotel was a short walk from the beach and shops and restaurants. It was nice but I dont think for me it would be worth paying full price for. Read less
