Kimpton Hotel Palomar San Diego

San Diego, California

Virgin rating

The hotel

We love the chill out spaces at this chic hotel. Firstly there’s the Palomar’s lobby living room where you’ll find the evening drinks reception and morning hot drinks. You should also try the soulful Mexican street food at Curadero, the hotel’s flagship restaurant — the cocktails are good here too. At the outdoor rooftop pool and lounge there’s more cocktails, plus a pool menu and great views of downtown. Talking of downtown, if you want to stroll out, you’re near the shop and restaurants of the Victorian Gaslamp District and an easy walk to the waterfront.

We were unaware until our arrival that the hotel was under construction. The remodel also impacted the pool area, which was partially closed. We were informed that there is a construction notice on the website. We must have missed it. The front desk told us it would be a brand-new-looking hotel in the fall, including the lobby. For now, we heard and experienced construction and felt shaking in our room after 9 a.m. Read less

My husband & I were in town from Phoenix for a night to catch the Kraftwerk concert at the nearby San Diego Civic Theatre. My husband & I were in town from Phoenix for a night to catch the Kraftwerk concert at the nearby San Diego Civic Theatre. The Kimpton’s front desk agents are the fastest front desk agents I’ve come across in my travels. So efficient! The Kimpton’s location was awesome! We had a short walk to dinner and an even shorter walk to the theatre. The hotel has a very modern/masculine vibe to it. As a female, I actually like that when it comes to travel. I love anything sophisticated & sleek! This hotel is definitely that! My husband probably loved it more than I did. It’s clearly not a new hotel and appears to be undergoing some construction, but we had no issues with our room. Perhaps it was a bit on the small side, but the bedding was high quality and the bath products were top notch! I don’t sleep well in hotels, and I was able to get a good night’s sleep at this one. Thank goodness! As for the area around the hotel, yes, there are some homeless people walking around. Yes, if you walk too far onto the “wrong” street you will see some tents. Many cities unfortunately have homeless issues. If that concerns you, then avoid staying anywhere downtown and do your research on alternate areas. Of course, staying outside of downtown might mean that convenience is being sacrificed depending on what your plans are. My reason for 4 stars and not 5 is due to the fact that the hotel charges a very steep amount - $55/day - for parking. Otherwise, a great quick stay! Read less

The hotel was very nice inside! Upgraded rooms, nice staff and pet friendly. Very close to downtown and very comfy beds. The only down side is that the area surrounding the hotel is not the best. The welcomed my puppy with a treat and a water bowl, it was great

The Hotel is a bit dated and rooms could stand some updates to carpets, lighting. Lighting in bathroom is especially challenging. We booked a skyline view room and exterior patio, view was very nice. Hotel staff were all very friendly, check in and check out were very efficient and the valet staff were great for parking/car retrieval. I'd likely give this a 3.5 if I could, or a 4 for another area. Fifth Ave has really changed over the past two years, many restaurants are closed, homelessness is seemingly everywhere, foul odors, public defecations, used syringes, loud boom box music. I could go on and on, there seems to be very limited presence from LEA and the Gaslamp area is not an area we'd stay again nor is it one I'd recommend to others, until the City of San Diego addresses the issues it's an avoid for us.
