Japan Town, San Francisco

Virgin rating

The hotel

This hip boutique hotel marries East with West – and, somewhat handily, is in the middle of Japantown. As you walk in, you'll see the Japanese-inspired décor and funky artwork. Step outside and there’s a beautiful Japanese courtyard garden with koi pond. There’s a cool lobby bar to hang out in too. Enjoy an exotic cocktail and grab a book or board game from the library – they have free WiFi too if you need to catch up with things back home.

I don’t know how this hotel gets such good ratings unless you are a pet owner. Other than the lobby and staff, which are great, the rooms are awful. Not only are they small, but the bathroom layouts are a joke and offer no privacy if you are not alone. Not only are they small, but the bathroom layouts are a joke and offer no privacy if you are not alone. This hotel cannot maintain a normal temperature as they run either heat or air conditioning but not both. On temperate days you are stuck with what the hotel provides, which in our case, was a sauna that could not be escaped. I would never stay here again. Read less

I've stayed in the Kabuki 4-5 times through its many iterations. The latest renovation is really nice. The rooms look fresh, updated, clean, and nice. I miss the soaking tubs that they use to have, though. You can't beat the location next to Japantown. The breakfast buffet was a really nice touch, and I ate outside next to the koi pond every… Read more

I miss the soaking tubs that they use to have, though. You can't beat the location next to Japantown. The breakfast buffet was a really nice touch, and I ate outside next to the koi pond every morning. Highly recommend it. I can't comment on the other amenities--like the workout room, etc.--because I didn't use them. I met a number of very cute dogs while staying there, and I would definitely recommend for my fellow canine parents! Read less

Lovely location. Front desk staff very accommodating. Appreciated the Cappuccino machine. The room was alittle tighter than expected. The sauna style shower was huge but ceiling fixture did not work; left with a handheld that wasn’t easily adjustable, Room staff congregated in hallway mid day to chat which was hard to rest thru.

Hotel Kabuki is amazing. I've been staying here for a long time, and both the hotel and the staff are wonderful. The bed, sheets, and pillows are top quality, and there's little to no street noise on the top floor. The buffet breakfast, awesome music, and world-class gym are impossible to beat.
