Kimpton Hotel Palomar Chicago

The hotel

Anyone wishing for a sophisticated and calming approach to accommodation in Chicago should look no further than the Palomar which rates guests' well-being and comfort levels just as seriously as the stylish interior décor. The hotel offers just that little bit extra with personalised in-room Yoga sessions on the TV or perhaps you would prefer an early morning jog? Of course, you don't have to jog to be able to enjoy the sights and guests staying at the Palomar will be pleased to learn that River North, Navy Pier and the Magnificent Mile are all within walking distance. Further fabulous fitness facilities come in the form of the hotel's indoor heated swimming pool and 24-hour gym which are both guaranteed to help you work up an appetite just in time to check out the gastro-lounge dishes at the Sable Kitchen & Bar. What with in-room dining options and complimentary wine tasting sessions every day at 5.00pm, it's a wonder that you'll find the time to set foot outside however, it would be rude not to so this is your chance to give the Windy City a whirl.

Hotel- Kimpton Palomar Chicago Date- 11/4 – 11/6 (2 nights) Overall: 4/5. Very good. We enjoyed our stay at this hotel. It is disappointing that this property is leaving the brand. Rewards Club Recognition- 4/5. Very good. We were verbally thanked for our loyalty, and our room was upgraded to a corner ‘King Spa Premier Room,’ and we were given welcome amenity points. Staff- 5/5. Excellent. Sarah, at the reception, was wonderful. She checked us into the hotel, and she remembered speaking to us on the phone once when we had to make a sudden schedule change. She was welcoming and informative. When I asked for a coffee maker and a minifridge to use, she promptly had the items sent up to my room. Mark was engaging and accommodating as well. Property Appearance & Maintenance- 4/5. Very good. Exterior- 3/5. Average. The exterior looks like it may be an office building. Because the lobby living room isn’t open for seating, from the outside, the hotel looks stark. Branding was appropriate. Interior- 5/5. Excellent. The carpets, walls, & light fixtures in the hallways and lobby were clean and well maintained. Accommodations- 4/5. Very good. Our corner ‘King Spa Premier Room’ was just right for us. Spacious enough for us to get comfortable, we (& our pet) settled in quickly. The bathtub was a nice addition to the corner shower. The bedding was comfortable, and the furnishings were in good repair. Housekeeping- 5/5. Excellent. The room was clean, the carpets vacuumed, and the bathroom spotless. Toiletry items & towels were provided in a supply adequate for the length of our stay. The carpets had no noticeable stains; all lighting worked. Pool/Gym- 4/5. The pool on the 17th floor is closed during the pandemic. The gym is available with social distancing guidelines. Breakfast/Meal Options- 3/5. Average. The hotel restaurant was closed and only a limited set of items were available for purchase at the front desk (the minibars have been emptied during the pandemic). The wine/social hour has been suspended during the pandemic, and usual coffee service is unavailable; a keurig coffee maker can be sent to your room instead. For wine hour, on our second night, the hotel did provide a bottle of wine since lobby consumption wasn’t possible. Since we brought some food to keep cold, the front desk did send up a mini fridge, in addition to the minibar fridge. Laundry- not evaluated. The laundry bag had been removed from the room, but the pricing sheet was still present; pricing was as expected for a hotel of this class. Computer/Printer/WiFi- 5/5. WiFi was strong throughout the hotel, and streaming was smooth. Other- A small terrace is available on the 17th floor, which provides views of the city below. Read less

The hotel (and Chicago) was very empty. Valet parking was not operating, but the staff gave me instructions on how to access the garage they offered a discount with $25/night. The roof top patio was opened, and I went up for about an hour and had the entire place to myself. Look forward to visiting Chicago and this hotel again once things are more back to normal and I can enjoy my favorite US city! Read less

I always have a memorable experience at this incredibly cozy and chic hotel. The staff here never forgets to remember your name upon check-in and they treat you with genuine warmth and enthusiasm. The Palomar has always been my first choice whenever I lived away from Chicago, Illinois because of the generously sized jacuzzi tubs and the fact that the staff here always did their very best to upgrade their most loyal customers. Whenever I have the opportunity I choose a King Premeir Spa room because of the beautiful and expansive layout of these rooms that make you feel like your walking into your own personal condo. Being a guest here is like walking into a spa with the positive zen vibes and the beautiful minimalistic decor. Everything the city has to offer is within walking distance and the neighborhood is one of the very best in the city because it's do peaceful and all the best restaurants are nearby. The hotel Palomar is pet friendly too and your pet will be welcomed here no matter what room type you choose. I was treated so wonderfully by Sara, Ben and Mark who made sure all my needs were met and Sara took great pains to upgrade my room on short notice. Everything here has been deep cleaned and thoroughly sanitized. In fact I was informed that upon your check out each room is taken off their inventory and deep cleaned for a full three days to meet their high standards. My bed was comfortable and it's always such a treat for me to pick out a good movie from their menu options because most of the movies were either nominated for the Oscar or are currently available in theaters. I'm a cinephile so I love to take a long bath then pick out a great movie to enjoy for myself right before drifting off to sleep. This hotel has the perfect blend of visually stunning decor, coziness and decadent luxury. I highly recommend the Palomar for anyone seeking a quiet escape within the city. I always bring my own personal touches like a light blanket, some silk scarves and my tibetan bowl 🥣 and I create my own little escape. This hotel is so unique and friendly yet very upscale; and your pets will love it here too! Read less

I’d give this hotel 4.5 if I could. Hotel is in easy walking distance of most evening places and restaurants. Red line stop is also right there. Staff was super friendly. Always said hi as I walked by. Always friendly no matter who was on duty. I had a spa room. I booked this hotel because of that and I’m so happy I did. Totally worth every penny. With their late checkout I was able to take a bath before checkout. The hotel is lovely but just needs some minor fixing up. Handle on my shower was coming loose. Cracks in the spa tub that made it impossible to guess what they were for. Headboard had divots (not pictured). Just needs a staff member to visit each room and take care of these items. Another odd thing was the $100 hold on my credit card for “incidentals”. With the restaurant closed, no room service, and no maid service I wonder what was even possible to charge to the room. Seemed silly. I didn’t care but seemed totally odd. I slept quite well but just note that state street was a bit loud. So if you are a light sleeper ask for a room that doesn’t face state street. The last odd thing was the soap dish. While stylish, it wasn’t practical. Try picking up flat soap from that dish, I had to pry it up each time. Nice idea for the dish but poorly executed when combined with the flat soap. Read less

But the good part, needing to make due with covid, room was nice, we had a corner city view room. Spacious, clean, quiet (except for the city noise outside) no complaints here. Even though there was no wine hour, as we walked through the lobby in the late afternoon, the desk offered us a glass of prosecco. Very accommodating front desk, we checked in early without a problem. The roof top terrace is open in the evenings to just relax and enjoy the city lights. This hotel is about 4 easy walking blocks to the Chicago river. Now about the people on the street outside the hotel. It's Chicago, the sidewalk is a public sidewalk. So therefore, we felt safe outside and around the hotel, but there are still other people of all types on the sidewalk. There's alot of tourists in this area. Lots of hotels, lots of rental bicycles. Just stay on the main roads as you would in any large city. Overall, we'll be back. Read less
