The Hotel Highland at Five Points South

Birmingham, Alabama

The hotel

One of Birmingham’s premier luxury hotels, the Hotel Highland offers a contemporary setting within walking distance of a myriad of attractions, including shops, bars and restaurants. Expect to enjoy southern-style service at its best and rooms thoughtfully appointed with all mod cons. A complimentary continental breakfast can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace, preparing you perfectly for a day of sightseeing. Come sundown, head to the H Bar in the hotel’s lobby for a martini or two before choosing where to dine for the evening. A hotel with an interesting history, it was formerly the Pickwick Club, a dance hall, its flamboyant interior an antidote to Depression Era America. In it’s new guise as the Hotel Highland it is still one of the city’s favourite places to be.

If you’re looking for a place where loud music from a next-door bar will keep you up until 4 am, this is the hotel for you. The front desk said this was a regular occurrence. When I asked for a quieter room they said there was no way to avoid the noise.

The person at the front desk to check us in was super friendly and during the small talk we were asked what brought us to the hotel, on our departure they asked us how our stay was and how the concert was. I thought that was super nice of them and it also shows that the staff at the Indigo truly care about the people who stay at the hotel. The Rx Lounge inside the hotel was very nice and their menu was very well rounded with small food items and drinks. My wife had a hickory smoked old fashioned which was amazing. The gentlemen who worked valet was super nice and friendly making sure we had everything we needed unloaded and placed on a cart so we could take it to our room. Hotel Indigo has quickly become a favorite for us and we look forward to our next visit there. Read less

The hotel is very well located near the city center but what what really stood out was the service. We got upgraded upon arrival and everyone who we came across was nice and helpful, Stephen in particular was great!

The apothecary theme is a little unusual when you first arrive but once you get passed that you'll be greeted by great staff. What can I say? This hotel is pretty unremarkable. Rooms are kind of awkwardly laid out (at least the suite) and had a lot of furniture. A few complaints: not a lot of outlets (one in the bathroom - tough when getting ready for a wedding), bar doesn’t open until 430 (which was later than that) and the location is well less than stellar. We didn’t feel overly safe at night and even walking to dinner was a bit sketchy (someone ran in front of us and seemed to double take if they could grab my purse). Long story short: it’s fine. We were staying on points so for free, it was good. Read less
