Battle House Renaissance Mobile

Mobile, Alabama

The hotel

Past meets present. Southern charm meets modern city slickness. Fine dining meets casual tavern tucker. The Battle House Renaissance Mobile Hotel & Spa is a cacophony of contrasts. A member of ‘Historic Hotels of America’, its sympathetic revamp brought it bang-up-to-date with musts like complimentary WiFi, but didn’t lose classic luxuries like marble bathrooms, or unique features like the lobby’s whispering arch. The outside spaces are equally well-dressed, with its pool patio accessorised with potted greenery and a hot tub for added relaxation. The downtown Mobile address puts you near plenty of eateries, but why dine out when the hotel’s home to the district’s only AAA Four Diamond restaurant, The Trellis Room, as well as casual pizza joint Joe Cain Café, and the martinis and light bites of Royal Street Tavern?

We booked last minute to see the New Years Eve Moonpie Over Mobile festivities and found we were at the very center of the action. This allowed us to go and taste the largest edible Moonpie and march in the 2nd Line then take a break in the comfort of our hotel room before the headlining band and MoonPie drop (which is actually a rise) just a block away. The pros: beautiful, clean historic hotel. The room was large and the bathroom eme se for a historic property. Location was EVERYTHING; we could literally see the giant Moonpie from the premier lounge over breakfast. The service, even for a holiday was fantastic and the lobby decoration made it a festive place to lounge. The cons: the bed was not very comfortable (unlike most Bonvoy properties) and the walls are not well insulated so we could get the detailed conversations of both neighbors meaning we found ourselves whispering to keep our conversation private. The heat didn’t work correctly meaning the temperature was never right in the room without manual adjustment constantly. Maid service skipped us, but the hotel corrected this immediately and credited us points for the inconvenience. I would return to Mobile and book the same property for the holiday for the convenience, but probably not for a day trip due to the lack of privacy and comfort. Read less

I have been to the Spa at the Battle House many times and loved it. But today that was NOT the case. When the reservation was made there was no mention of renovations. This would have been received so much better if we would have been warned when the reservations were made that the experience would be so compromised. My favorite thing is the steam room and that was our first destination. It was closed for renovations. The lounge was in process of renovations but could be used. In this room we felt like we were in a closet with too much furniture. Every wall was bare and the furniture staging did little to encourage conversation or social time at all. We always order lunch in the lounge but today we were told You can’t get eat there anymore. You have to sit “on the Terrace”. All that means is they have put tables outside the spa by the elevators. A public area where anyone may be coming and going including large carts of dirty laundry or trash. It is not comfortable sitting in an open area in your robe, spa hair and no makeup. We tried to go to the outside hot tub and were told it was closed for the winter. I have used the hot tub by the pool in the winter in the past. We were finally told that the plumbing for the pool and hot tub were under renovation also. On a positive note the spa services were excellent as always and the food was superb. The staff members were attentive and treated us great. We tried to express our displeasure to the manager but did not get any indication that this mattered to her. It was hard to enjoy a tranquil spa day with so few areas that really encouraged a pleasant relaxing day. Again I believe these inconveniences would have been received so much better if we would have been warned when the reservations were made that the experience would be so compromised. I have had a Trail card for several years but today elected not to invest in another and will likely consider other spa options on my next girls day out. Read less

We booked early for 1 night for New Year's Eve to watch the Moon Pie Drop. The valets were quick and just great. They were backed up so they told us to go ahead and check in. They brought our luggage to our room about 20 mins later. Check in was easy. We were met in the lobby by a hostess with champagne. There was also a banana flavored alcoholic drink you could get. Both were free. And both tasted great. We were in the tower with a beautiful view of the docks. I can not say enough good things about the room. Beds were comfy. We slept great. Decor is beautiful. I'm going to find an alarm clock like they had. It showed the time on 3 sides! Security was very present, very nice and we felt completely safe. You receive 6 wristband per room. This allows you in and out of hotel during the celebration. However it was NOT a hindrance. There were 2 security personnel at the entrance we were discretely looking for the bands. Just keep it visible. Checkout was quick and also easy. There is a balcony on the 2nd floor where you can watch the drop but if is directly across the street from the hotel so anywhere outside allows great viewing also. I would highly recommend the hotel for couples and families. Wonderful hotel and staff. Read less
