I reviewed this hotel about 8 or 9 years ago when I started staying here and loved it. It is unfortunate that it seems to have gone downhill since then. Let’s start with the good... The staff. Most of the staff is phenomenal. You walk in and the valets are friendly and holding doors. The bar/restaurant staff is great. Friendly and make sure you have what you need...refilling your drink before you can ask. Nette remembers your drink and is a pleasure to sit at the bar with. I’ve met two of the maintenance crew because of issues (which will get into below) and they were great. Did everything they could to help. The front desk staff used to be friendly and welcoming, but I didn’t get that vibe this trip. And then there is housekeeping. Ugh. Not friendly, but decent at keeping the rooms clean, although only gave me one clean towel one day. Check out day she came banging (not knocking) on my door at 8:33am to see if I was still there and ask when I was leaving. What?!? It is no where near check out time, why are you bothering me?? Reading other reviews, it seems this has happened previously so this is either their new policy, or they have new staff on board that does whatever they want. And now why I say it’s going downhill...my last trip 6 months ago, I had a room with a broken air conditioner. Maintenance came up as soon as I called to check it and they realized it needed work so they called the front desk and arranged for me to get a new room right away. When I got my new room key the front desk even gave me a free breakfast coupon for the inconvenience which was super nice and unnecessary. Fast forward to this trip, I check in and when I shower the next morning I am dealing with practically no water pressure (see photo...it is unfortunate that I can’t post the video of the shower). I tell the front desk and she said, oh yes you called us about this last night we will be sending someone up today. Well guess what, I was not the one that called last night but clearly I am not the only one with an issue. They told me they would send someone to my room to check it out. When I got back I checked and it was the same- not able to be fixed. I asked the front desk for another room, since clearly there was a problem with mine and was told they were sold out. The next day I tried again for another room and was told the same thing, but they sent another maintenance worker up while I was there. He saw the problem and was sure he could fix it and tried so very hard. But after taking apart the shower control from the wall and the shower head, he was still unable to fix it. He told me he would talk to the front desk; you can tell he genuinely cares about his job and felt bad he could not help. So that was that, for $400 a night ($369 plus taxes) I got to shower daily with a drip of water. I was only able to wash my hair once while I was there and sadly the best option if I needed to wash it again was to use the bathroom sink. There was zero recognition from management or staff that there was an issue and no one seemed to care. It was very disappointing to spend $1,500 for this level of quality/service. I believe they just recently renovated so yes the rooms are in good shape, comfortable beds, clean carpets etc, but if they are having major issues with the plumbing etc, it needs to be acknowledged and addressed. Finally called the front desk to see if there was a problem. Was put on hold for several minutes and was then hung up on. Called the front desk again (no acknowledgement or apology for the hold/hangup) and was told room service had taken the phone off the hook because they were so busy. If I wanted to eat, I'd have to come downstairs. Night 2 - didn't trust room service so brought in take out. Night 3 - tried room service again. Phone rang 32 times (I counted!); when it was finally answered I was told there was no room service as they did not have the staff. I have never heard of a 17 story hotel (not exactly a boutique) completely punting on room service. Night 3 continued - no wifi; no tv. I called the front desk again and was given an 800 number to call for tech support. I have to call?! Was on hold with the 800 number for 45 minutes. Finally hung up. To sum up - no room service, no wifi, no TV. Nightly room charge..with taxes - over $400. Staff wasn't rude but not helpful either; seemed like this was par for the course. Completely unacceptable and ridiculous! I see these other great reviews and that it was voted Conde Nast Traveler best boutique hotel. Not sure what happened when I was there, but will never consider staying here again. Read less
