Hotel Indigo Savannah Historic District

Savannah, Georgia

The hotel

Not satisfied with just being amid the history of Savannah, Hotel Indigo is part of it. Housed in the Guckenheimer, a red-brick corner building which first debuted in the 1850s, this boutique hotel’s had something of a renaissance. Its 19th century shell cloaks modernised interiors, where bespoke murals cover walls and plush rugs dress hardwood floors. It may feel like they’ve been given the key to a designer magazine’s stock room, but Hotel Indigo hasn’t lost its Southern charm. It’s the first thing that greets you at Five Oaks Taproom, closely followed by local Georgia beer and farm-fresh food. Nicknamed ‘Grand Lady of the Bay’ by locals, if you fancy dining out, you’re just a block from City Market and River Street.

Awkward bathroom and sink layout. Front desk staff is very unwelcoming and not of the level you would expect at a hotel like this. I understand the COVID-19 restrictions in place, but the staff seems to use this as an excuse for laziness, emphasizing at check in everything they’re not going to do for their guests. The table barricade at the front desk between guest and staff makes it feel like you’re checking in to a detention center, who thought this was a good idea? This hotel is an embarrassment to the Hotel Indigo brand. Read less

I’ve never written a review before, about anything, so it takes a lot for me to sit down and write this. We initially requested an early check-in when we made the reservation one month ago. We were coming to Savannah for a best friend’s wedding and my wife was the maid of honor. The morning of arrival (Friday), we called the hotel at 10:30 to ask/remind them about our early check-in request. “Yes, we have it here under your reservation notes. We’ll call you when it’s ready”. We arrived an hour and a half later (12:00pm), and went inside. We were told the room wasn’t ready yet but they’ll call us when it is. After two more hours (2:00pm) and still no phone call, we went in again to check on our room status...still not ready. Finally, at 3:40 (again no phone call), we decided to just go and bring all of our stuff into the lobby and check in. Guess what? The room was ready! We never got a phone call. Who knows what time it was actually ready. We were informed at check-in that there will be no housekeeping services during our stay due to COVID-19, and that if we need to request more towels, soap, shampoo, etc. to just let them know. If we absolutely wanted housekeeping services, we could request it 24 hours in advance. This is an important detail to remember for later in this review. We went into our room after checking in and noticed a few things immediately upon entering. The first were the gnats. Flying in the air, dead on the floor, in the bathroom, in the bedroom. Second was dog hair on the floor, literally everywhere. You could tell the floor had not been swept or mopped thoroughly, if at all (the floors are hardwood). Hair in the shower as well. Third was a constantly running toilet. You could tell the room had not been cleaned well...which you would think it would have been, given how long it took for our room to get ready. I called about the toilet running and that it wouldn’t flush, and reception simply said “come back down and we’ll find you a new room”. After waiting 5 hours for our room to be ready in the first place. Really? I ended up fixing it myself. We had also selected the King Suite when making the reservation so that we would be close to the bride’s room (she had one as well) and that way all of the women in the wedding party could get ready in a larger, suite-type room for the wedding. Throughout our stay, we noticed gnats, mainly in the bathroom, and of course any time we brought food into the hotel room. Thankfully not as noticeable at night when going to bed. One can only imagine it was due to lack of thorough cleaning. The entire weekend we were the there, the trash bin next to the elevator on our floor was never emptied..by the end of the weekend there was trash spilling over the bin and onto the floor, and there were gnats/fruitflies everywhere. The carpet in the hallway on our floor was also not vacuumed for the entire weekend; how we know this for sure was due to confetti on the carpet which was there the entire weekend starting on Friday night. By the time we checked out on Monday, the confetti was still there. Truly gross conditions. I can understand reduced staff or certain services being cut back due to a pandemic, like the hotel bar being closed, valet services being suspended; but the hotel was extremely busy and cleaning certainly should never be cut back in a hotel, no matter the circumstances. Back to the housekeeping/toiletry situation. We requested new towels, soap and shampoo, and housekeeping services on Saturday afternoon. We went to the wedding, came back late Saturday night...still no towels, soap, or shampoo in our room. We asked again Sunday morning when we first woke up. No delivery of any items by that afternoon. We asked again (attempt number three) Sunday late afternoon, and after coming back from dinner Sunday night...we had a set of towels and new bed linens that had been set on the couch by housekeeping. And still no soap or shampoo! And to top it off we had to change the bed linens ourselves. No housekeeping whatsoever, trash bins were full, obviously the bed wasn’t changed, etc. Truly unbelievable and poor follow-through by all staff. It's worth mentioning as well that there's a mandatory face mask policy in Savannah, and there's signage outside the hotel stating masks must be worn while in the hotel...I can't tell you how many times we saw people walking into and through the hotel without a mask on and not a word was said by the staff. Two stars given the great location on Bay Street. If the location wasn’t so good, I would give this one-star simply given the fact there was running water, electricity, and a roof over our heads. If I were you, I would stay far, far away from this hotel. There are plenty of other hotels on Bay Street I would check out before even considering this place. Truly, will never stay at this hotel again. When we checked out we weren’t even asked how our stay was. Very disappointed. Read less

We have stayed here several times and weren't surprised that the hotel was following ALL guidelines to take care of their guest. The rooms are always clean and quite. We were all pretty tired this trip, but always sleep well when we visit here. It is centrally located and has ample parking. Staff was just as friendly as they always are. It was very quite this time, and we were pleased to be able to stay again. We will be back for sure. Read less
