Hotel Indigo Savannah Historic District

Savannah, Georgia

The hotel

Not satisfied with just being amid the history of Savannah, Hotel Indigo is part of it. Housed in the Guckenheimer, a red-brick corner building which first debuted in the 1850s, this boutique hotel’s had something of a renaissance. Its 19th century shell cloaks modernised interiors, where bespoke murals cover walls and plush rugs dress hardwood floors. It may feel like they’ve been given the key to a designer magazine’s stock room, but Hotel Indigo hasn’t lost its Southern charm. It’s the first thing that greets you at Five Oaks Taproom, closely followed by local Georgia beer and farm-fresh food. Nicknamed ‘Grand Lady of the Bay’ by locals, if you fancy dining out, you’re just a block from City Market and River Street.

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Indigo in Savannah, Georgia the first weekend in April. The photos on the hotel website do not at all look like what you actually get once you get there. This hotel is dirty, but the hotel rooms were very clean. It was weird! When we first arrived there was a trashcan so full of trash that it was spilling over outside of the trash can. When you enter the lobby there were tables in front of the front desk (to ensure 6 feet of distance) with table cloths that were dusty. The carpets and floors inside the hotel were filthy. There are 2 elevators in the hotel and the area surrounding the 2nd elevator were filthy and torn. The trashcans were frequently overflowing with trash. The furnishings in the lobby were sparse, it was dusty and visible dirt was on the walls and doors. While at the bar one night, a lady spilled her wine. The bartender told the lady "don't worry about it, housekeeping will get to it tomorrow morning". There is a sign in the lobby saying, Please excuse our mess, Remodeling in progress" however we were NEVER told the hotel was in the process of being remodeled. Even with the sign, you could tell the place is not regularly cleaned. The hotel claims that some of the suites have riverfront views. THIS IS NOT TRUE AT ALL! I would not stay at this hotel ever again. This place is filthy - but the hotel rooms were spotless. I guess it is okay if you want to walk through filth in order to get to your room. Read less

The parking is limited in Savannah specifically in the historic district so it was nice to have a hotel that had a parking garage. I decided to venture to River Street for a couple of hours before trying to check in again. I came back around 4PM and they were able to get me checked-in. I had a king-size room on the top floor (seventh floor). I liked that they renovated the rooms and were trying to make them more urban and chic with the wallpaper and furnishings however, the walls are not very soundproof at all and the mattress was pretty uncomfortable and noisy. It was fine for one night but, I would not recommend the bed for a week long stay. The location is great and it takes about five minutes to cross the street and go down the cobblestone path to get to River Street. The hotel has an outdoor seating area, no room service-due to COVID 19, and a farm-to-table restaurant, which I did not try because there are so many options within walking distance of where I stayed. This by far is the best bar in the city. Briana is an amazing individual as well as a bar tender. She can be swamped and hold it down by herself. Briana is the only reason I come down here often. I highly recommend this bar .

Our first trip in 15 months and not in any hurry to stay here again. Savannah is one of my favorite places. We usually stay in a historic hotel but due to COVID decided a chain might be a better choice especially when the Hotel Indigo’s website stated all their COVID precautions and responses. The location is excellent-in the City Market area and just across Bay Street to the River district and the new Plant Riverside District. The rain shower fixture was also refreshing, but that’s all the positives. Masks were supposedly required but there were guests without masks who were in line with others checking in & out. Staff did wear masks. Both of the hand sanitizer dispensers were empty-one was in the lobby by the elevator & the other by another first floor elevator. I had mentioned this to a staff member who looked to be a manager & was offered a bottle on her desk which I declined & just used my own. The next day the dispensers were still empty. The hallway carpeting was dirty (supposedly the hotel is going to be renovated). There was only 1 small wastebasket in the bathroom w/o a liner, 1 roll of toilet paper which wasn’t even in the bathroom but under the sink in the main room, 1 bar of soap (I did ask for & did get another). There was no “Do not disturb” sign, no TV guide (I can understand maybe because of less contact but you could post an online guide-if there was one, we were never informed). We felt very sorry for the young woman who was checking guests in-she was alone for over 20 minutes with a line of guests checking in and guests with issues. She was very patient & professional for being left alone. One of the worst things was the beds-both creaked even when we just sat on them to put on our shoes plus the mattress pad was worn and underneath it was a plastic cover-we wondered what that plastic noise was when sleeping so looked to see what it was. There was no refrigerator, and we wouldn’t attempt to use the ice bucket as it looked dirty and there was no liner. There was dust and hair in the corners of the bathroom and dust on the picture frames above the toilet. We realize there may be a shortage of staff during this time but the manager should be checking on cleanliness. We would’ve thought facilities would’ve been cleaner during this time not dirtier. The other Hotel Indigo in Athens. GA and in Asheville, NC we’ve stayed in before were much better and cleaner-that was another reason we thought we’d be safe booking the Savannah one. Read less

Nice hotel to stay in. There were a few things I did not like. There was no mini fridge or microwave in the room. It really smelled really bad in the outside, parking lot side. Not many great selection for the TV. The beds were comfortable. And the room was fairly clean. Housekeeping is not that great.
