The hotel

If you love to shop you’ve come to the right hotel! The Royal Sonesta is only a few miles from downtown Houston and just a short walk from The Galleria shopping mall. What’s more, if you don’t fancy walking or driving there, simply hop on the complimentary shuttle bus to and from, it couldn’t be easier! Just a few miles from downtown, there’s plenty to see close by, if you can tear yourself away from the hotel that is. Very comfortable indeed with spacious rooms furnished in a cool and contemporary manner, you’ll also love the relaxed atmosphere that prevails. Grab a towel and head to the outdoor swimming pool on the 5th floor, perfect for unwinding by in-between bouts of sightseeing. The Restaurant is also a lovely place to linger awhile with its leather banquette seating and bold splashes of colour. Serving international favourites and open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, we’re sure you’ll become a frequent visitor during your time here. For evening cocktails, head to the Lobby Lounge, also the venue for a spot of live entertainment every now and again!

Booked a reservation the week prior for a business trip. After an exhausting day of travel and meetings, I found the lobby to be extremely disorganized. The staff struggled to check anyone in and a line was going out the door. After 30 minutes, a man motions for me to finally come up only to step away for an extended time. When he returns, he looks up my information only to say, "I see your reservation right here, but we don't have any rooms left." I asked him what the point of a reservation was and why they gave away my room. He ignored my question and told me that the next door hotel had rooms and they would be expecting me; That was a lie too. I spent another hour trying to find a place with same-day availability. This hotel is not to be trusted. Save yourself the trouble and go anywhere else. Read less

Certainly not the once-grand Royal Sonesta. Dilapidated rooms (peeling paint from the bathroom ceilings), musty carpet smells and terrible customer service (Ja'Marcus). Amenities such as bottled water were never provided. The hotel is roughly on par with a 15-year old Holiday Inn. It should be rated as a 2-star hotel, not 4-stars.

The modern bathrooms add a touch of luxury, while the city views and night lights from the rooms are a nice bonus. The hotel is well-located in the Galleria district close to downtown and other restaurants and attractions. The convenient coffee shop downstairs provides a great spot for a light breakfast, and the onsite bar and restaurant offer a variety of delicious food and drinks. The service throughout the property, from valet to housekeeping to the restaurants and bars, is top-notch. Overall, I highly recommended this hotel for short stays. Read less

We stayed at this property for the 2024 Commodity Classic, booking a total of seven rooms. I have never-in-my-life experienced such a complete disaster! Five flights to Houston were delayed, so we arrived very late (1am-ish). The hotel knew we were arriving late because one of our guests, who had checked in the day before, had let them know in advance. Upon arrival, according to the person at the front desk, their system was down when we arrived, so we were told to go to IHOP or sleep in the bar. Wait, WHAT? When they did finally call us (3 or 4 am-ish), they checked us into rooms that didn't have beds, only sofas! No blankets, no pillows, etc. One of our guests used towels from the bathroom as a blanket! We were told they would take $150 off of our bill for each room for that night. Really? Why wouldn't those rooms be comped for that night? Now, here we are almost a month later and I am trying to get copies of our final folios, and no one will answer the phone, no one will respond to emails, etc. There have been multiple attempts via phone and email, yet no response from the hotel. All of the rooms were set up to direct-bill to one credit card, yet there are charges on individual credit cards. This has got to be the most incompetent hotel I have ever had to deal with. I will NEVER use this property again! I will NEVER recommend it to anyone! NO, NO, NO . . . save yourself a lot of headaches and stay elsewhere! Read less

A bit posh for us but a pleasant enough stay for 3 nights… not much to do in the surrounding area as everything seems to be miles away so a lot of walking involved.. The bar staff were great, friendly and knowledgeable. Cant complain had a good stay
