We chose this hotel for our wedding anniversary and were very happy. Perfect spot, beautiful scenery, great location. The hotel is a bit 'tired' and dated but did not deter from our experience. Super friendly staff

We were a little apprehensive in staying here after reading some of the reviews, but after speaking to the hotel we decided to keep the reservation. I am glad we did, it is true the hotel is a little worn out and some of the service is a little slow, but everyone is very nice and honestly we learned while staying in Kauai everything is a little slower and on island time. The location is second to none, with spectacular views of Hanalei Bay and evening sunsets. The food in the restaurants was excellent and I did not think the prices were outrageous when comparing them to other restaurants in Hanalei or earlier in the week while staying at the Ritz Carlton in Maui. One of the mangers Kayla added a nice personal touch to our stay and Jodie on the concierge team did an excellent job working through multiple itinerary changes with us. Overall a great stay. We had a beautiful suite with stunning views of the ocean and mountains. Location is simply outstanding on north shore of Kauai - near Hanalei Bay. For the most part, staff were really quite good but since this was recently a St. Regis one has certain expectations and those are not met. If you dial down what you expect, then the location and other features of the property will be wonderful. We truly had a great time but this was in part because I had received a large discount on the room. Positive: Clearly the location. The suite we had was quite large and was quiet with spectacular views. Breakfast buffet was the typical pricey affair but quite good with again the stunning views. House keeping did a great job and our room was cleaned before lunch and they provide a welcome turn down service at the end of the day. Pool staff were helpful in bringing towels etc. Valet parking (while expensive) was always very prompt. Negatives: Recent reviews have all noted that the property is in need of a renovation and the formal replies from Princeville Resort staff to TA reviews repeatedly note that they hope folks will come back after the renovation. For the most part the property is quite attractive but yes the design details are a bit dated and exterior paint is stained in places. My major issue is that the level of service does not meet the past of the hotel as a former St. Regis and clearly does not meet the expectations of what the owners indicate will become of the property. Keep in mind that my disappointment is based on a comparison with what one expects of a property at the St. Regis level or like brands (Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton). At each of these other brands there is a certain unique level of vigilance and care from staff. This is not the case at the Princeville currently and it is a shame that management is content with treading water until a renovation - I don't think this does much for their brand. A few disappointments: 1) At check-in we arrived early (noon) and were told that our room was being cleaned. Our cell number was taken and we had lunch. By 3:45 still no call. Front desk reiterated that room was not done and that they would call - acknowledging that formal check-in time is 4:00pm. By 4:15 I returned to the front desk and oh yes my key is now ready - why not a call? Minor but reflects the lack of peak service from a luxury property. Relatedly, many times when we came to the front desk there was only a single staff member and this invariably led to delays in getting assistance - again not something to be expected for such a large luxury property. 2) Water cooler in gym was empty two days in a row and I reported it to the front desk each day. Again, small thing but consistent with lack of attention to detail. 3) There is only a single restaurant for dinner in the hotel. Really odd for such a large property. If you do not make reservations early they are often booked (I called at 3:30 on a Friday and nothing was available at any time). The only other option is sushi in the bar/lounge. The lounge is quite busy as it is a gathering place for folks watching the sunset. This is really nice but there is absolutely not enough staff to serve the packed room and one is often waiting a long time for service (and you can watch other tables trying to track down the overworked servers to get their bills to pay). Again, at a resort like this it is unusual to have only one choice for dinner with the fall back option being a limited sushi menu in a crowded bar that is understaffed. I want to emphasize that I am not disparaging the staff overall. None of the above is a devastating experience! Just small annoyances if you thought this was a St. Regis with a different name - it is not. Staff were consistently pleasant and sought to be helpful. My major point is that you can really enjoy this property if you temper your expectations and get into relaxed island mood. Read less

The view at this resort is 5 star, but that resort itself is average especially for the price. Valet parking should be made optional instead of mandatory, otherwise the $35 per day fee should be waved. In my opinion it’s unfair to charge a daily resort fee in addition to the parking fee. The view at this resort is 5 star, but that resort itself is average especially for the price. Valet parking should be made optional instead of mandatory, otherwise the $35 per day fee should be waved. In my opinion it’s unfair to charge a daily resort fee in addition to the parking fee. Located on the north shore, it is absolutely vital to have a rental car otherwise you’re either stuck with very limited and expensive food options or having to pay big dollars for taxi service. The pool area is very small and crowded, and the beach is great if you only plan on laying on a chair and looking at the ocean. The water in that area is loaded with coral which is not supposed to be stepped on because it is alive, and so it’s really not a place to swim. We enjoyed the breakfast buffet but felt it was expensive at $43 per person. The views from the terrace restaurant are very impressive, but be aware there are birds everywhere that will attack your plate if you look away. Also the birds get inside the restaurant and pick off the breads at the buffet table which isn’t sanitary. The dinner menu at the restaurant is pricey and there isn’t much of a variety offered. Reservations must be made and you will still wait a while for a table and be treated to slow service. After one dinner we took the 45 minutes into Lihue or beyond for our meals, which were much better. Princeville has the potential to be a great resort but it did fall short of our expectations. I know it’s being renovated and I hope they take all suggestions made by many people seriously when doing so. We will be back to Kauai but not back to this resort in the future. Read less
