Hotel Becket

Heavenly, Lake Tahoe

The hotel

Part boutique hotel, part ‘upcycled’ lodge, 968 Park Hotel’s every bit as rustic as it is luxurious. Handmade furniture fills the guestrooms – some made from Douglas fir rescued from an old Nevada mine. Your bedding’s anything but homespun though, with luxury mattresses and organic linens helping ease muscles tired from winter sports like skiing and snowshoeing, or from laps of the heated pool in summer. You get complimentary parking (and WiFi), but it’s just minutes’ walk from Lake Tahoe’s biggest draws: Heavenly Mountain Gondola, the Stateline casinos, and the shoreline. Whatever time you return, the CoffeePub will be open, with craft coffees or microbrews served 24-hours a day; but make sure you’re back in time for Friday night’s wine tastings with local vintners, followed by live acoustic music sessions.

We didn’t even unpack our bags, we walked into our room that we paid $340 for one night, turned around walked out and requested our money back. The room was nothing like the pictures, it was disgusting it was trashy I wouldn’t stay there on my worst day. Barf.

We decided to do a last minute getaway weekend in Tahoe. We have an 8-month old golden retriever and wanted to take her with us. We had seen Hotel Becket while searching hotels and decided to give it a try. I called the hotel and spoke with Britteny. She was extremely helpful and pleasant to work with. She booked our room and we headed towards the lake. Upon arrival, Britteny was still working the front desk. She checked us in. We had asked for an upstairs room and she was able to accommodate us, but only had a room with two queen beds. The room is not all that large with two beds, but was clean and able to accommodate our dog crate and luggage just fine. The bathroom has a barn door and is fairly good size, but the shower is a corner unit and fairly small. We walked to the pool, which is connected to the other building. We sat out on one of the cabana like beds poolside for a bit. We then walked to the Heavenly Shops to eat, and eventually to the casinos to take turns donating our money. We stayed two nights at the Becket and were pleased with our stay. Because of COVID, there is no housekeeping service or breakfast. You can get towels etc refreshed upon request, and they have sack breakfast to go, which included a water, prepackaged muffin and breakfast bar. The location is great, as it’s walking distance to the shops, casinos, and lake. Especially if you have a dog, I would recommend giving Hotel Becket a try. Enjoy! Read less

In hindsight, we should have given the poor reviews more scrutiny, and opted for the safe option of Harrah's, Harvey's, or Mont Bleu (same price). We arrived on a Thursday evening late and got checked in for a 2 night stay. Upon getting to the room, we discovered a huge black hairball on the bathroom floor, but decided to speak to management in the morning. In the morning, we discovered that the shower drain was clogged which was disturbing. So on our way out to breakfast, I stopped in at the front desk and explained to the young lady the hairball and shower drain situation. I showed her pictures and she apologized and assured me she would have someone correct the problems immediately. She also said she would remove the resort fees from the bill for both days of our stay. We were gone most of the day and returned late afternoon to discover that the room wasn't made up and the hairball was still there and the drain still plugged. On our way out to dinner I stopped by the front desk and spoke to a different staff member. I asked him why the room wasn't made up and he said they stopped doing it because of Covid. I asked why someone didn't mention this policy upon check-in and he shrugged his shoulders. I explained that we were going to need more than the 2 towels provided and that the hairball was still there and drain still plugged. He apologized and told me he would send someone to take care of it while we are out for dinner. When we arrived back the hairball was gone, the drain fixed and fresh towels. At this point we wanted to open up the windows in the bathroom and bedroom to air out the musty smell. When I went to open the bathroom window, I discovered black mold on the window sill and around the edge of the window, so I opted to keep it closed and not touch it. When I went to open the bedroom window but there was no screen, so I couldn't leave that open because of the bugs. Very disappointed by the stay. Even with the resort fees removed, it was $221 for 2 nights in this remodeled motel. The pictures make it appear as though it's a really nice quaint resort, and the Wyndham name helps sell it. We wouldn't stay there again for half the rate, just not worth it. Read less

There were only two good things about this hotel: the location and the staff. The hotel was dirty and dark. The stairs going to the second floor were not lighted in the evening, the room was very dirty, the carpet was old and stained and it didn't look at all like the rooms in the web site. There were light fixtures that didn't work and that was "fixed " by adding a cord extension through the floor of the room and then covering the cord with black tape. A very real tripping hazard. The pool was unusable, it had a greasy sheen on top of the water and the lounge chairs were dusty and unkempt. Parking was reasonable and the beds were not too bad, but that is not enough to compensate for the disappointment we felt about the place. We ended up only going back to sleep there as there was nothing pleasant about the accommodations. We will not be back to that hotel and absolutely won't recommend it to anybody. Read less
