Custom Hotel

Los Angeles, USA

The hotel

There’s no escaping it – traditionally, airport hotels go for location and functionality in that order, with style bringing up the rear. Not so with Custom, the only boutique hotel located within a mile of Los Angeles International Airport (not to mention wonderfully close to loads of LA attractions and beach towns). Naturally Custom embraces its location – there’s a dedicated LAX Lounge with live departure times and the ability to print out boarding passes, plus complimentary shuttles to the airport. However, its rooms and suites having a soothing contemporary elegance, there’s a heated pool with cabanas, multi-tiered sun deck, and fire pit, and with Deck 33, you have American Comfort Cuisine, artisanal cocktails and a fine selection of microbrews. Outstanding.

The staff are friendly and helpful. The desk staff checked us in and out quickly. The valet parking attendant was extremely helpful and solicitous. The gentleman staffing the breakfast service was very polite and helpful. Breakfast was great. although the price was not included in the $176 room charge to my surprise. We had arrived after 10pm thinking we could get a bite to eat at the lounge next door as this was advertised on the webpage as being open. In fact the kitchen was closed, and we ended up going to the supermarket next door to find something to eat. The room was spartan. I was not comfortable going barefoot on the carpet, that clearly looked and felt like it needed a shampoo. Light bulb was out on the bureau where the coffee machine was located. Creative use of extension cords versus permanent wiring. Wireless worked fine. We were awoken a little after 6AM by a loud periodic banging noise. It was very disorienting. It sounded like someone had put sneakers in a drier. I called the front desk to let them know. It turned out that it was coming from the hotel gym. Someone was running on the treadmill. This hotel doesn't live up to its web depiction. For a student -- with room paid for by others -- I could see staying here (but not near the gym). Otherwise, there are many fine 3-star business class hotels to choose from. On the positive side, we have now learned three good lessons. 1. Don't believe web depictions of hotels. 2. Read the online reviews first - one of which was quite witty - and accurate. 3. Always ask on check-in: please don't put us across the hall from or next to a gym. Read less

This hotel is really old and very run down. Many issues in our room including shades that are ripped, missing lights/bulbs, non-working wifi, very hard beds, knobs missing from furniture, keys cards not working every night, and more. Suggest looking elsewhere.

It was a pleasant overnight stay. The design of the room is not ordinary, even the bathroom. They had water bottles on the table but were for sale. Shouldn’t the guest be given complimentary water? Anyway, the complimentary airport transfer was satisfactory. I’m just wondering why I was charged $3.89?
Image of the Tripadvisor rating Worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in!

My partner and I stayed here for just one night before an early flight from LAX. I travel a lot, and I can categorically say this is the worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in. Staff were rude and unfriendly, hotel was shabby, room had dirty sheets and towels. Awful. Couldn’t have been less impressed. Do yourself a favour and book elsewhere!

I read some bad reviews after booking this hotel, but I have no complaints after staying here with my two daughters for a few nights. The hotel lobby has been updated, it was clean and bright. The room was basic, but clean and had everything we needed including a/c. Ralph's is right next door, with a Starbucks inside which was convenient for snacks etc. The parking is a bit of a pain, and I chose to do valet parking because I didn't want to be searching around at night for a spot. It wasn't cheap, but you would be paying for parking at any hotel in the area. We found all of the staff at the hotel very friendly, and helpful. It ended up being a good location for us to explore everything, being in between the beaches and then all of the stuff in Hollywood etc. Read less
