Custom Hotel

Los Angeles, USA

The hotel

There’s no escaping it – traditionally, airport hotels go for location and functionality in that order, with style bringing up the rear. Not so with Custom, the only boutique hotel located within a mile of Los Angeles International Airport (not to mention wonderfully close to loads of LA attractions and beach towns). Naturally Custom embraces its location – there’s a dedicated LAX Lounge with live departure times and the ability to print out boarding passes, plus complimentary shuttles to the airport. However, its rooms and suites having a soothing contemporary elegance, there’s a heated pool with cabanas, multi-tiered sun deck, and fire pit, and with Deck 33, you have American Comfort Cuisine, artisanal cocktails and a fine selection of microbrews. Outstanding.

I stayed for only one night and was overcharged $770 on my credit card. I tried calling multiple times to resolve but I was placed on hold for 20-30 mins. 5 star staff, 2 star hotel. Whoever decided dark grey was a good colour for the walls in the corrisodors needs to go check out their eyesight. It is awful. The front desk are great - I didn't look up so didn't see the ceiling falling apart and damp until next morning. The battered elevator is not a good start but when you get into the passageway, it looks like a dungeon. The room was just Ok, but the bathroom was ancient and when I got up at 5.30am next morning there was no hot water. That was the final straw, I checked out a day early and went to a hotel that was a palalce in comparison for just £30 more Read less

I’ve stayed at The Custom hotel quite a few times since it opened and it has sure fallen a long way. It used to be a solid yet contemporary boutique close to the airport. In fact I even ran an event there in the early days when the pool and bar were lively. These days the hotel feels more ghetto than cool and is in obvious disrepair from the flaking wallpaper to missing lights and fittings. The room itself had a weird odour and the carpets and blinds were old and stained. I even found some dirty underwear in one of the cupboards. The best part of the stay was the airport shuttle. Well....where do I start? I checked into the hotel and sat in the lobby area waiting for the room the become available as I was slightly early to check in. I was sat on the sofas in the lobby and water started to drip on my head. This made me look up at the ceiling and I wish I never did, it looked like it was going to fall on my head with water stains all over it. Once I received my room key, I took the lift to the second floor. The lift itself was in a bad condition and once the lift doors opened it felt like I was in a prison (not that I know what this is like!). I opened the door to my room and the condition of the room was poor and had a strange smell. I went for a shower and 2 out of the 3 bath towels provided had stains on them and looked like they had been chewed by someone’s dog. A colleague had a room next door to me and he woke up to no hot water for a shower in the morning. We checked out and moved hotel because another night in those conditions I was not prepared to do. The only positive and I mean only positive were the staff behind the front desk who were very polite and accommodating. Read less
