Hotel Shangri-LA

Santa Monica, Los Angeles

The hotel

The very essence of the golden age of Hollywood glamour, the Hotel Shangri-La has been welcoming guests since 1939. An Art Deco treasure, sumptuous guest rooms and suites offer iconic views of the ocean or the city and come very well-equipped indeed. When you can tear yourself away, there’s the poolside to relax by – treat yourself to a private cabana and it becomes a real retreat. There are plenty of restaurants on your doorstep but the hotel’s own should not be missed. Featuring classically trained and creative chefs, feast on the freshest local produce, handpicked from the weekly Santa Monica Farmers Market whilst admiring views of the Pacific & Palisades Park. Pre-dinner, take the elevator all the way to the top for drinks at Onyx Rooftop Bar offering world-class sunsets as well as cocktails late evenings. Santa Monica Pier is a 10-minute walk away but should you wish to explore further, the metro is also a 10-minute walk which will connect you to Hollywood, downtown and more quickly and affordably too.

Due to COVID, I avoided the inviting pool, but I did spend much of my time in their in-room hot tub. Their staff was very friendly, and the delicious breakfast always arrived with a smile. My stay and Shangri-la gives me fond memory of Santa Monica even in the bleak COVID times, and I'm hoping to revisit in better times. Read less

My wife arranged a birthday/ R n R getaway for a night. This establishment came recommended by our daughter who works for the City of Santa Monica, and as you can see by their website they are not cheap. She arranged our stay through Expedia and according to Expedia we were to get a ocean front room and received a ocean view instead. A bait and switch I can’t confirm but Expedia shows you the room of your request. The hotel stated that they displayed the wrong room 🤔. We travel and have used Expedia extensively and they are usually spot on with the accommodation information. Also most well managed hotels and resorts notify you of potential annoying construction noise on and off the property should that be a deal breaker, not in this case. We were informed at check in the pool and jacuzzi would close at 9pm. We chose to use the jacuzzi around 5:30-5:45 which by the way only had a few jets working. Since it was just the two of us, we delt with it. At approximately 6:45 two hotel workers showed up to work on the jacuzzi unprompted and started to turn it on and off and adjust the jets. After about 15 minutes of off and on they finally had the whole thing working. At 7:30 they turned off the jacuzzi and the lights to the pool as well. Didn’t take us long to get the message, we left back to our room. At approximately 8pm we called and inquired about the noise outside our room and were told that was caused by the steel plates being driven over, and it was our tough luck. Today at checkout we mentioned these issues again and were told the manager would contact us, he did, offered us twenty five dollars off ?! That doesn’t even cover the cost of the parking. Your property is 6 floors and there might have been a couple other rooms occupied, so they could have moved us. At least offered. The jacuzzi issue is on another level, could it be WHO we are I don’t know and I honestly believe they don’t care. We requested to speak to the manager and there has been no response other than here’s $25 and now shove off, has led to this review. There are many other places to choose from in the area, if you want to come close to getting your moneys worth stay somewhere else. Ritz prices and Motel 6 quality. Read less

I’ve stayed in a different hotel every night for a week while traveling for work and this is the first room that had no indication that it was cleaned with COVID in mind. Every other room has been sealed and had disposable cups etc. Although I’m pretty sure no one with COVID has been in this room judging by the amount of dust and the shut up smell it has, it’s still disconcerting. I’m not sure you can appreciate the dust on the shelf and window through the pictures but it looks like (and smells like) the room hasn’t been open in some time. The saving grace here is the view and the staff was very pleasant and helpful while checking in. The bathtub is extremely deep and would not be suitable for anyone with knee/hip issues to get in and out of. There is a chain lock on the door, haven’t seen one of those in a hotel in forever. The door is directly across from the neighboring room and it sounds like they are in this room every time they go in and out . is an outside walkway that must be taken to get to the room. The linens are clean and the bed is comfortable, it’s just not what I was expecting given the price tag. Definitely a let down. Read less

Out of this world views of the ocean and santa monica pier. Sunset from the hotel room was amazing. Included breakfast was great. Tesla chargers to charge your tesla. Probably one of the best ocean views anywhere in the world.
