Hotel Shangri-LA

Santa Monica, Los Angeles

The hotel

The very essence of the golden age of Hollywood glamour, the Hotel Shangri-La has been welcoming guests since 1939. An Art Deco treasure, sumptuous guest rooms and suites offer iconic views of the ocean or the city and come very well-equipped indeed. When you can tear yourself away, there’s the poolside to relax by – treat yourself to a private cabana and it becomes a real retreat. There are plenty of restaurants on your doorstep but the hotel’s own should not be missed. Featuring classically trained and creative chefs, feast on the freshest local produce, handpicked from the weekly Santa Monica Farmers Market whilst admiring views of the Pacific & Palisades Park. Pre-dinner, take the elevator all the way to the top for drinks at Onyx Rooftop Bar offering world-class sunsets as well as cocktails late evenings. Santa Monica Pier is a 10-minute walk away but should you wish to explore further, the metro is also a 10-minute walk which will connect you to Hollywood, downtown and more quickly and affordably too.

Service & value were great, all the employees were friendly and helpful. Curtains in the bathroom / shower had mold on them however. Rooms were otherwise cleanly and accommodating. Room service & food were both excellent as well.

We visited for a few days in late April and loved our stay! We will definitely stay here again. Quick pros and cons... PRO: -Staff was always friendly, fast, and very helpful. We were also able to check in several hours early. -Very cool, retro hotel with updated amenities. -Beautiful beach view that couldn't be beat! Though it's right up to the street, traffic noise was never an issue. Always had a peaceful night's sleep. -Very pretty courtyard, pool, and hot tub area that are away from the general public. -Beach pedestrian walkway is located directly at the corner, so access was a short walk across the street. The others are several blocks away. -Room came with an empty mini fridge (i.e. doesn't charge you to use it) which was SO nice to have! -COVID safety protocols were definitely in place & a relief to see. CONS: -We had continuous issues with our TV volume so we were not able to use it. -The Onyx Rooftop Bar was still closed due to renovations, but there's plenty to see outside the hotel. -Quite a few minor cosmetic updates are needed i.e. furniture and floor touch ups (lots of scuffs), paint here and there, and the sun-bleached pool towels could use replacing. But overall our room was clean and tidy and bed was comfy. -Other minor items included our room key not initially working, missing room service menu, robes, and 'do not disturb' sign, and makeup mirror not working, but these were either quickly remedied or weren't an overall issue. Other notes: -The closet in our king room was VERY small. Plan accordingly. -No ice maker on floors. You have to call down for it - but they were always very fast. (Less than 5 min) Read less

I would still recommend this hotel because I don’t believe it would be the same experience for everyone and it is so close to the ocean which is nice. Read less
