Bayview Hotel

Maine, New England

The hotel

If you’re going to stay in Bar Harbor, a waterfront pad is a must. Every room at The Bayview is set just 75 foot from the shore, with views over Frenchman’s Bay and the Atlantic, and a balcony to enjoy them from. But it’s not just your guestroom that benefits from the vista. You can take breakfast on the oceanfront terrace, tucking into homemade pastries, scones and muffins, and the ‘hot entrée of the day’. Or you could just take some time out on the lawn which sweeps straight down to the water’s edge (or to the stony beach when the tide’s out), perhaps with one of the freshly baked cookies prepared each day.

We opted for the “economy” version of the bay view rooms, an island king I believe (the rooms below the lobby floor). While the view and location directly on the bay were lovely, we did expect a bit more at $300/night. The room was quite spacious but felt oddly lacking in furniture, leaving kind of an empty feeling in the space. The super simple chairs on such a large balcony felt like a waste, especially given how much we would have liked to be comfortably outside. The rooms clearly haven’t had much of an update, and the bathroom did seem outdated. With a couch or some additional comforts, we would have felt much cozier and less like we were staying in a passerby motel. The stay was fine and people were friendly, but I don’t know that I’d stay again based on what we were hoping for. Read less

If you only read one sentence, read my headline :). The hotel was truly fantastic in almost all categories. Highlights include some of the more genuinely friendly and welcoming people working the property, they handled covid precautions very well (especially with the pivot from buffet breakfast to cute to-go breakfast bags), the harbor views (you really are just 75 ft from the waters edge), comfortable accommodations, big rooms, etc. The cons, the hotel clearly just went through a renovation and is working top to bottom, starting with the 3rd floor down to the 1st (according to what the woman at the front desk shared). The pictures online make all the rooms look exceptionally modern, which the lobby is, but the rooms are not. At least not OUR 1st floor room. As of September 2020, the rooms on the 1st floor have furniture and a bathroom 10+ years old. It’s not a deal breaker, but the pictures online are deceiving. I hope the owner does the right thing and updates them because they are doing themselves a disservice by misleading their guests and being greeted with confused and disappointed travelers. I would have chosen a different room on a higher floor had I known. Instead I chose the most affordable room (which at $350 is still a premium) because I was lead to believe the only difference between the room types is the floor level - and imagine that the view from the 1st to 2nd is negligible.... anyways I shared my feedback with the manager and was offered a discounted stay which I greatly appreciated. I cannot give this 5 stars because this was not as described. Other FYI you are a mile to downtown bar harbor. Super easy (3 min) drive in and out and it’s nice to be slightly removed from the downtown but if you want to walk out of your room to dinner downtown, know that you’re a drive away. Read less

Given COVID, I fully understand things like the shuttle and breakfast not being operational. They gave us adorable breakfast bags every morning with baked treats and homemade granola. Tea coffee hot chocolate and fruit and snacks always available. We opted for no cleaning and always had clean towels outside the room. View is gorgeous. The room… Read more

Had a fridge and microwave. Front desk crew always warm and accommodating. Lounge area is beautiful for post COVID travelers. Perhaps get some outdoor heaters to enjoy the outside spaces and still keep distance. Read less

My husband and I recently stayed in the Bayview Hotel for our honeymoon and were very disappointed. Before talking about the negative aspects of our stay, I should first note that Matt, the gentleman who manned the front desk for the majority of our stay, was very kind and professional and is a huge asset to the property. He even provided us with a bottle of champagne as he knew it was our honeymoon. Unfortunately, the rest of the property did not live up to this. The property recently changed hands and the new owner completed a "renovation." My mother and sister are interior designers so I have been around this stuff my entire life. This property was updated in the cheapest way possible and much to its detriment. Any charm it may have had in the past was lost. The hallways have literal astroturf that is already wearing down, the rooms have new bed frames, mirrors, chairs and lamps, but still have some of the older furniture and accessories from before the half renovation which makes for a highly imbalanced interior design effect that is off-putting. The bathroom still has particle board ceilings that were literally falling apart. Our bedroom had a large stain over the carpet that was incredibly unsightly. There was an old hutch that I assume used to hold a mini fridge that remained in the room and the mini fridge was instead moved into the old armoire. Very strange choice. There were no amenities at all (with the exception of an old ice machine in the hallway that looked like it was from the 1970s), including no robes, no slippers, nada. The hotel does have a very nice location on the bay and the views are beautiful. However, there are several other waterfront hotels that are far less expensive. We booked the Bayview because we were looking for a luxurious property for our honeymoon. The room we booked was even billed as their "most luxurious room." If the room had been less expensive and the pictures on the website weren't, based on our room, quite misleading, I would have taken no issue with the property. However, to charge >$500 a night for the room we got was really a rip off. We stayed in 4 properties over the course of our honeymoon and this was the only property we werent thrilled with. This was also the second most expensive hotel we booked despite all hotels being in prime vacation locations. My husband is pretty low key and not as selective as I can be but he was also really disappointed. In fact, he said this hotel would be the only thing he would change about our trip. Not the best. Additionally, when we checked in, we were asked if we wanted maid service given COVID. I requested that we have towels only and said we would let them know if we changed our mind. This was apparently miscommunicated (I'm sure an honest mistake) and we came home to a maid leaving our room which was a little shock. Again as this was likely a mistake, so no big deal, except she had her mask off and hanging around one ear. Did not inspire a lot of confidence and made me feel pretty uncomfortable. Read less

Matt and Nora are fantastic and have been there for every need we’ve had and every question we’ve asked and Matt even made dining reservations for me before we got here. The rooms are quite spacious, the beds are very comfortable and you can tell they have take every precaution possible with COVID. The location is perfect. We are a short 2 minute drive into Bar Harbor, yes you could walk. And a quick ride to Acadia. That’s just where we wanted to be for this trip. We couldn’t ask for more and would certainly stay here on another trip to Bar Harbor. Thank you Matt and Nora and the entire staff. Read less
