Grand Hotel

Maine, New England

The hotel

Just as you’d picture a New England coastal home, The Grand Hotel has all the gable roofed charm, dove-grey and white exteriors, column-clad porches, and upscale decor that make Maine so instantly recognisable. Perched on Chase Hill, just a stroll from downtown Kennebunkport, this classic retreat may be grand in style, with its own gallery of local artists’ works, but it’s intimate in atmosphere, with just 17 guestrooms to guarantee a homely feel. The home comforts also come in the shape of free WiFi, free parking, and free use of their cruiser bikes, so you can nip down to the shops, cycle off to one of the town’s clam shacks, or head out to explore Kennebunk’s other majestic old homes, once owned by 18th and 19th century captains of industry or shipping.

I had to plan a quick visit to visit an ill relative in Maine. I had looked online at many hotels but, I felt I could not stay at somewhere that looked depressing from the start. Came across the Grand Hotel that looked clean bright and comfortable and not like I was there for a conference. I booked for three nights and would be arriving late close to front desk closing. An hour before closing I got to check in call from Michelle who wanted to make sure of my arrival time and so that she would be there to greet me or to leave instructions for after hours. It was nice to receive the call and feel that they were expecting me and wanted to ensure I arrived without any issues. The hotel is beautiful in my room what's great and comfortable. Everyone that work there was very friendly and polite. My return flight home had a very tight connection know it's concerned about the piece of luggage and having to wait for it. I left a note in my room for Michelle to see if she could ship it home for me. I called during my connection and she said she would take care of it no problem. I also was not in need of housekeeping for my room during my stay in received a credit towards one of there restaurants which I chose The Boathouse nearby which was wonderful. Food was great service was excellent and I felt most comfortable. It truly was what I needed for the stay and I'm so appreciative it will definitely be back and want to give another shout out to Michelle for her attention to detail an excellent service.. Read less

We enjoyed our winter getaway weekend at the Grand Hotel. It's a small hotel, just three floors, with an art gallery on the ground floor sharing space with hotel reception. Our room was listed as a "classic king." It was cozy without being crowded. The king-sized bed was comfortable, and had lots of pillows and a nice comforter. We had a view of the street below. I suspect the hotel wasn't terribly busy, given the time of year. That was fine with us, because it was pretty quiet. Pros: Bright, nicely decorated room; updated modern bathroom (ours had a large shower, no tub) with heated floors, which we loved; comfortable bed; Keurig coffeemaker in our room; location within walking distance of shops and restaurants. Cons: Some difficulty with the climate control - the wall heater was kind of noisy. We booked the room through Expedia, which offered a better deal than the hotel website. If we could get a reduced rate, we'd stay here again. I'm sure the summer rates are higher than we'd be willing to pay. Read less
