Grand Hotel

Maine, New England

The hotel

Just as you’d picture a New England coastal home, The Grand Hotel has all the gable roofed charm, dove-grey and white exteriors, column-clad porches, and upscale decor that make Maine so instantly recognisable. Perched on Chase Hill, just a stroll from downtown Kennebunkport, this classic retreat may be grand in style, with its own gallery of local artists’ works, but it’s intimate in atmosphere, with just 17 guestrooms to guarantee a homely feel. The home comforts also come in the shape of free WiFi, free parking, and free use of their cruiser bikes, so you can nip down to the shops, cycle off to one of the town’s clam shacks, or head out to explore Kennebunk’s other majestic old homes, once owned by 18th and 19th century captains of industry or shipping.

We stayed for 2 nights in Sept. I called the night before to request early check in. I spoke with Carly who told me that it would be no problem, and that in fact my room had already been cleaned and inspected. I was just to contact in the morning with my arrival time. I did that, and then contacted multiple times after arrival. It was early - 11:30, so I didn't expect to be checked in right away, but I did expect to be checked in early. I was assured all that was needed to accommodate early check in was to from someone to walk a key over from the Inn to the Hotel. My room was guaranteed by 3; however. by 3:15, I still hadn't heard that the room was ready. I went to the hotel anyway to check, and found my key. There was no packet with my name. Literally anyone off the street could have grabbed that key. Completely insecure. When I asked the staff what happened, they said "sorry, we're busy". When I got to the room, I found food from a previous patron in the ice bucket. If that was left after room inspection, what else was not cleaned or inspected? Frankly disgusting. The room was absolutely freezing. 60 degrees when we arrived. We adjusted temp, but it took a full day to return to a normal temp. The room was tiny with not enough storage for even 2 days of clothing for 2 people. The next day, we attempted to take the "free" bicycles out. They were terrible. Tires flat, gear shifts broken, and brakes not tuned. Our ride was very unpleasant, and we had to walk the bikes much of the way. They were difficult to ride and dangerous. We ultimately had to rent bikes anyway. I understand it is a boutique property, but for $400 a night, I expect more for my money. At minimum-check in at the promised time, a clean room, livable temperatures, and a courteous live person on staff on the premises. COVID is not an excuse to charge a premium for subpar service. The only action taken was to remove the ice bucket and food after I put it in the hallway. I sent this review to the General Manager. Read less

This is an outstanding hotel with a fantastic location. Easy walk to downtown Kennebunk with shops and dining. Free parking. Hotel has done a great job of coping with COVID-19. Continental breakfast brought to room is an especially nice touch.

We had a lovely experience at the Grand Hotel. The location is right in the center of Kennebunkport and was convenient for restaurants, bike paths, and local shopping. Our room was small but very clean and had all the amenities. Highly recommend.

I travel a lot and have never written a review on TripAdvisor but I am compelled to tell you do not stay at this hotel. My teenage daughter and I spent 8 days in Maine working our way down the coast. Our final 2 nights were spent in Kennebunkport at The Grand and it was extremely disappointing, especially given that I paid almost $800 to stay here. The text communications I received prior to arrival were pleasant but said to text or call if I needed to get in touch with guest services. They were neither responsive to my texts or calls prior to arrival and when I needed instructions on what to do with the physical room key upon checkout. Calls went to an answering service even during normal operating hours and the three I made were completely ignored as was the lengthy email I sent regarding my dissatisfaction after I left the property. The room smelled like a previous smoking room that had been sprayed with Febreze, the toilet ran constantly, the AC unit tapped loudly and consistently for minutes on end and the walls are so thin, you hear full conversations from both neighboring rooms. Given COVID they’ve made the decision to move staff offsite, which is the only time I experienced this during my trip and not a good move by KRC. There is a sign at the end of the street saying there are public bathrooms at The Grand, but the sign on the door says they are closed. Nevertheless we were put in the awkward position of the public loitering outside trying to get in every time we came and went which did not give me comfort of security. I would never stay at this property or a KRC hotel again. Read less

Hello, I am EXTREMELY disappointed in the service I received after my stay on 7/24-7/26 in Room 208 at The Grand. I called multiple times the day we departed regarding items we mistakenly left in the closet because we left so quickly due to a family emergency. No one called me back or replied letting me know I could come back to retrieve the items. I called several times over the next few day and was able to speak to no one and heard from no one. I finally heard from someone by the end of the week after calling incessantly and was told my items would be mailed to me. I still have not received them. I have called and texted multiple times this week and still have heard nothing. For the amount we paid for this stay and for the image the hotel puts our, I expect much more. I live in the Boston area and am a teacher and mother in a neighborhood where people are constantly looking for recommendations, especially on social media. I am truly disappointed by this entire experience and expect a resolution, or at least a response, immediately. Please help! Read less
