The hotel

Located in the heart of the Old Port, relax in one of Portland's most inviting hotels. It’s the little things that make a difference when you’re away from home. There’s the complimentary Starbucks coffee each morning; the free bikes for exploring downtown Portland (and free town car if you fancy a more leisurely ride); the bar bites accompanying that day’s martini special at the happy hour; the chance to taste Maine’s famous seafood at Eves at the Garden; and the turndown service with a naughty pre-bedtime chocolate).

Great location - easy walking distance to everything in downtown Portland. Rooms are old, but fine, however bathrooms are updated, which is nice. Also, the concierge is friendly and the kindly offer airport transportation. The WiFi is not good, though. Annoying at times.

We enjoyed our stay at the Portland Harbor Hotel. The room was lovely and the staff delightful. The fitness room was well equipped. Blue fin was excellent. The valet service was also very efficient and welcoming.

The hotel has is very well maintained and the large outdoor space with a fire pit is unexpected in a metropolitan hotel like this. Our Junior Suite was clean, well appointed and had just the right amount of space to stretch out after walking Portland. We would definitely put PHH on the top of our list when we return to Portland. Looking through the reviews of this hotel there seems to be a pattern. Non-US citizens get the sub-standard rooms. We stayed for two nights on a deal with our American friends. We both booked the same deal at the same time and yet their room had chairs, large windows and a bed that could be accessed comfortably from either side. It was also airy and spacious. Our room (220) was, by comparison, a cupboard. Nowhere to sit, no view, not even the signature chocolate lobster on the first night! Did I complain? You bet I did! But the hotel pursues a very flexible pricing policy (i.e. they charge what they can get away with) and I was told I could purchase an upgrade if I didn’t like the room. Having already paid $350 for the first night I was reluctant to pay again just to have somewhere to sit and declined the invitation. I have travelled extensively in the USA but have never encountered such an uncaring hotel at such outrageous prices. From all the favourable reviews on this site from US citizens I can only assume that overseas visitors are assumed to have lower standards. It entirely ruined the holiday and, if I didn’t know better, would have given me a very poor impression of American hospitality. Read less

The hotel lobby is lovely as well as their center garden area. the staff was very friendly and helpful. Our only complaint is about the room. The photos on the website show sun filled rooms with white bedcovers and red accents. Our room was dark and uninteresting and once everything was tallied for the one night, very expensive. Read less
