Sheraton Portsmouth Harborside Hotel

New Hampshire, New England

The hotel

If you like messing about on the water, this is the Portsmouth pad for you (and not just because of the heated pool inside). Just a stroll from Picataqua River, it’s an easy walk to the docks for the city’s harbour cruises – and you get glimpses of the water as you amble around the property. Some of the best views are from the casual but creative Two-Fifty Market – tucked away under the sweeping staircase of Sheraton Portsmouth Harborside Hotel, it’s a contemporary setting for classic dishes and New England favourites, including those ‘must tries’: lobster rolls and clam chowder (although it’s the harbour views that steal the show as you dine). The waterfront location also puts you close to Market Square, which throws you into coastal New England life, and to sights like Strawbery Banke Museum and historic Moffatt-Ladd House.

Pros: Great location for exploring Portsmouth. Park your car ($20 self/$25 valet) and explore the entire downtown on foot. Excellent proximity to shops and restaurants. Rooms are clean and reasonably updated. Beds are soft (which I love). Bedding is nice quality as are towels. Restaurant staff were truly lovely. Kind and helpful and genuinely friendly. Cons: This is a popular hotel for wedding parties so on our weekend stay it was VERY loud at night. The hotel overbooks apparently. We booked a standard king room and they didn’t have one for us. While they comped us breakfast, I would always prefer to get the room I booked. Our 4th floor room faced the highway so we heard a lot of road notice. In addition the hallway access door near our room was so loud as it creaked and then slammed shut that it woke me all night. As did the dozens of very loud and very drunk guests returning from weddings from 10pm - 1am. And the vomiting woman in the room next to us. While the behavior of other guests is not the hotel’s responsibility, they certainly should be prepared to enforce quiet hours. Two middle of the night messages to the hotel did not yield the desired outcome and I slept very very poorly. Overall, despite the fabulous location, I would not recommend a weekend booking here. I think it would be fine for weekday business bookings. Read less

The new Club Lounge is awesome, but what makes it so amazing is the incredible and welcoming service from Christine. We also had the privilege to work with Martaveous (sorry if that is misspelled) as we had to revise our reservations and he is new and went out of his way to ensure everything was taken care of perfectly. The staff at this hotel truly are great people and they deserve special recognition - we are Lifetime Plat Elite and travel in hotels half of the year and if I encountered Christine, Alex and Martaveous the other 147 days on the road I would consider myself very fortunate. We loved our stay at the Sheraton. It is perfect for walking downtown and enjoying the city. I really enjoyed the concierge lounge where Christine and Vivian took wonderful care of everyone. I highly recommend staying here.

I spent my life on the road and while we are not frequent travelers or loyal anything now, this Sheraton Marriott is extremely overrated. $300 for a one night stay at a wedding guest discount was ridiculous. The hotel is tired! It's the little things.. Where are the hand sanitizers for the remote, the cleansing towels for makeup? The upscale linens? We love the Marriott chain, but not this hotel. The carpeting in our room was tired. When I realized the hotel is now pet friendly, I looked at the carpet and shuddered. Most hotels have plank flooring or tile. Yikes. The wedding was a great event but the staff forgot to give the guests staying at the hotel the gift bags which included an invitation to breakfast the following morning. Members of the family had no idea of the problem. Once they realized the problem the staff whined that there were too many of them. Really?? The family had to station people at the elevators to let them know. In a word underwhelmed... I'd really suggest looking at the Hilton or Hampton inn hotels that are further up the hill, away from the train noise and the view of the salt mountains. Read less
