The Vanderbilt

Rhode Island, New England

The hotel

Welcome to one of Newport’s famous mansions, built by Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt himself in 1909. Recently restored to its former glory, it combines unmatched heritage with a modern service ethos that has made it the recipient of numerous hospitality awards. A welcoming glass of champagne sets the mood, after which you’ll be delighted by the sheer sumptuousness of your guest room. There are two swimming pools to tempt you, one indoor and one outdoor, the latter the perfect suntrap in summer. Alternatively, head to the Spa for one of the Vanderbilt’s signature treatments, including the Duet massage, perfect for couples, mothers and daughters or best friends. The bright and airy Conservatory is a wonderful place to linger over breakfast or lunch, whilst the Muse is renowned for serving outstanding cuisine in an historic setting. Before dinner, sip on a delicious Grace cocktail whilst tapping your toes to some suitably Jazzed-up music.

I stayed at the Vanderbilt this past long weekend and from the moment I checked in to when I checked out the staff went above and beyond to make my stay memorable. To my surprise, this was an engagement trip, and everyone from the front desk to the valet treated us with warmth and congratulations. The hotel itself is well kept, and I felt like those working truly cared about the guests who stayed. Breakfast was delicious, the rooftop bar has beautiful views, and the suite we stayed in was large and kept immaculate. I will absolutely be returning to this hotel on my next trip to Newport. There just seems to be a lack of organization among the staff. It took 25 minutes to get a coffee each morning and we noticed many other guests were frustrated. It is really hard to understand for a five star hotel. It does seem the relatively young staff needs a competent manager. In the afternoon we wanted to get a coffee to drink in the courtyard and were told it is not possible. Seems hard to believe that this could not be arranged. Generally the hotel is very nice, the rooms are beautiful and tastefully fit out. They just need help in providing food service commensurate with the rest of the hotel. Read less

Bed nice linens Two TV’s Good desk area Nice bar- We brought our own wine and put in fridge for predinner glass. Glasses and opener avail. Nice bathroom with shelves. Just needed more vanity space to put makeup or hair tools and product. Bath was combo bath/shower and I never bathe where someone has showered. Only when separate. No balcony in room to enjoy fresh air. We got in our room about 2:30. Checkin normally at 4:00. I would not count on getting in early. Small lobby sitting area to wait. They do have spa, indoor pool, pool room, chess area. The check in person did not explain any amenities. The concierge did make nice reservations in advance of trip. During COVID very thorough checking if you had your COVID test. We presented ours and they made a copy and you had to sign state of Rhode Island documents. So get everything you need or you cannot check in. Which is good for the safety of guest. Delicious in room chocolate. They needed to have flat, cold water avail. They only had complimentary sparkling water. I would recommend bringing a couple of bottles for the fridge. Very centrally located to shops. Walked to White Horse Tavern which is upscale but ok. Dress code was casual but atmosphere inside was formal. Read less

The hotel is lovely. Great setting and vibe, very historic, and perfect location. The rooftop bar is fantastic with nice cocktails and a perfect view of the harbor and boats. Absolutely stunning at sunset. That said, the service was definitely not 5 star. More like 3. Several times our car was left out front unlocked for quite some time, and similarly we often had long waits to get our car - even with calling ahead. Of our two mornings having breakfast, one was fine and the other was insane. It took almost 45 minutes to bring us iced coffees and eggs, and the restaurant was not even crowded! We barely even got an apology. The ladies at the front desk were always kind and helpful, but the rest of the staff needs some service training for a hotel that commands this high of a price point. I was also shocked that even though we informed the hotel we were celebrating a milestone birthday, they did nothing to help us celebrate. First luxury hotel I’ve been for a special occasion that didn’t at least send a bottle of wine or even a card. All in all, it’s a beautiful building and a historic and special place to stay, but the “soft product” needs a lot of work if it’s going to be an Auberge resort and hold five stars. Read less

Staff were very friendly and also accommodating of our 16 month old daughter. Good food and a spectacular rooftop bar. A great location for exploring Newport and the surrounding area. We also felt the safety measures related to COVID19 were effectively but subtly applied.
