The Vanderbilt

Rhode Island, New England

The hotel

Welcome to one of Newport’s famous mansions, built by Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt himself in 1909. Recently restored to its former glory, it combines unmatched heritage with a modern service ethos that has made it the recipient of numerous hospitality awards. A welcoming glass of champagne sets the mood, after which you’ll be delighted by the sheer sumptuousness of your guest room. There are two swimming pools to tempt you, one indoor and one outdoor, the latter the perfect suntrap in summer. Alternatively, head to the Spa for one of the Vanderbilt’s signature treatments, including the Duet massage, perfect for couples, mothers and daughters or best friends. The bright and airy Conservatory is a wonderful place to linger over breakfast or lunch, whilst the Muse is renowned for serving outstanding cuisine in an historic setting. Before dinner, sip on a delicious Grace cocktail whilst tapping your toes to some suitably Jazzed-up music.

This hotel is located steps away from the heart of downtown Newport RI. Friendly staff made us feel welcome but many details were forgotten. I have been a guest for years and can see the decline in service with the new owners. I recommend the location but was frustrated with the lack of attention to the details!

As all the other reviews say, the property is beautiful and has many beautiful nooks - the garden, the billiards room, the lovely bar and an indoor pool. The pictures don't do it justice, you have to stay here to apreciate the special touches in the decor and ameneties. Read less

The Vanderbilt is hands down the nicest hotel in Newport, not only for families, but for anyone. The Vanderbilt is hands down the nicest hotel in Newport, not only for families, but for anyone. My husband and I had stayed in Newport at the other commonly known high end hotels, but the Vanderbilt blew those out of the water. We came with our toddler-age son in November for a spur of the moment getaway and were so pleased not only with the great room (Captains Loft - perfect for families with a separated area for children to sleep), incredible restaurant (we went 3 times - I’m dreaming of those Taro chips, and the food was high quality and exquisitely prepared each time), and thoughtfully appointed amenities (lovely courtyard with fire pits), but also with the thoughtful touches for children - for example, the crib they provided was a REAL crib (not just a chintzy pack and play), with a little cowboy themed toiletry kit. It’s little touches like these (that don’t cost the hotel hardly anything) that inspire loyalty! And to boot, the staff couldn’t have been friendlier, remembering us by name, and joking around with our son. We can’t wait to return. Other hotels could use to learn a thing or two from the Vanderbilt! Read less

My husband and I decided to take a last minute trip to Newport for the weekend with our 6 year old twin girls, and we knew immediately after booking that it was going to be a pleasant stay. A few days after booking the hotel, my husband received a call from the hotel's concierge asking him about our travel plans and told him of the wonderful things that they can prepare for the girls upon arrival. And let me tell you they did not disappoint! When we arrived at our Captain's Loft suite, we walked in with a beautiful pink princess tent set up in the family room area with a new coloring book and new pack of crayons for the girls to play with! The girls were in awe! They play in the tent most of the night before and after dinner and in the morning as well. And they brought their coloring book and crayons everywhere with them! The next morning, we woke up with a scavenger hunt list slipped under our hotel room door, and after breakfast the girls worked with Hannah at the front desk to go through the entire hunt check list. They ended up with cute sailor hats, another set of coloring books and crayons, and cookies and milk back at the room at the end of the hunt. The girls were thrilled! That evening, we had drinks at the firepit outside, and had dinner at the Gwynne (which was delicious by the way - we ate dinner there both nights!), and then went back to the fire pit after dinner to roast smores for dessert. You can tell that the staff were very attentive to every detail to make their guests have a wonderful experience. I am so happy we went, and we will definitely be visiting again soon! Read less

The Vanderbilt is well situated right “in town” within walking distance to anywhere important in Newport. The front desk staff are very accommodating. The only thing I would suggest is to improve the equipment in a small gym. I would definitely stay here when in Newport. Read less
