The Vanderbilt

Rhode Island, New England

The hotel

Welcome to one of Newport’s famous mansions, built by Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt himself in 1909. Recently restored to its former glory, it combines unmatched heritage with a modern service ethos that has made it the recipient of numerous hospitality awards. A welcoming glass of champagne sets the mood, after which you’ll be delighted by the sheer sumptuousness of your guest room. There are two swimming pools to tempt you, one indoor and one outdoor, the latter the perfect suntrap in summer. Alternatively, head to the Spa for one of the Vanderbilt’s signature treatments, including the Duet massage, perfect for couples, mothers and daughters or best friends. The bright and airy Conservatory is a wonderful place to linger over breakfast or lunch, whilst the Muse is renowned for serving outstanding cuisine in an historic setting. Before dinner, sip on a delicious Grace cocktail whilst tapping your toes to some suitably Jazzed-up music.

My wife and I recently visited the Vanderbilt, I must saw I was a little concerned based on some of the reviews but our stay was amazing! The newly renovated lobby was a perfect fit for a luxury RI property and we loved interacting with the pleasant hotel staff. We look forward to a return in the near future.

Magnificent setting and accommodations. The entire staff was informative, lovely and engaging. When we told other people we were staying there, they were jealous. We will stay at the Vanderbilt on our next trip to Newport, for certain.

A group of 6 of us (ladies with a big birthday this year) stayed at the Vanderbilt last weekend. I had read some recent reviews and was a little nervous but our stay was wonderful. I had been advised a month ago that some renovations were not complete & they had to change our room types which was a little disappointing but it was fine. We had 3 Captains Loft suites. Yes they need a refresh which is coming but they were perfect for us. The space was great for hanging out downstairs & half bath is nice. The full bath upstairs was fine & didn't even feel that old. We couldn't hear any construction noise at all. The AC units are loud but it felt like a noise machine to me. The lobby & main floor renovations are complete. The conservatory & garden restaurants were lovely with good selection & food. Hotel location can't be beat. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again! Read less

BIGGEST RIP-OFF IN TOWN! So incredibly over-priced for $700/night. We stayed on the 3rd or 4th floor...the floor plan is so disjointed. BIGGEST RIP-OFF IN TOWN! So incredibly over-priced for $700/night. We stayed on the 3rd or 4th floor...the floor plan is so disjointed. Our $700 per night room had old, grungy Home Depot quality carpet squares on the floor. The ceilings were not dormered and we kept bumping our heads. The paint on the walls was old a scuffed and the baseboards hadn't been cleaned in who knows how long. Everything was outdated...the A/C units were so old they sounded like a engine started everytime they came on...could wake you out of a dead sleep. The hotel is under renovation (which NO ONE informed us of) so we had to enter through the alley parking lot. Everything we needed we had to have delivered to the room because there was no access to normal things like an ice machine, etc. That's $5-$10 in tips every time! The furnishings in our room (a junior suite) looked like they came from your great uncle's basement apartment...worn upholstery, questionable pillows. They did have nice robes though. The spa was closed, they have an indoor poor (green and gross) and a workout room in the basement...not air conditioned. The meals were prepared and served from a large box truck kitchen in the parking lot...everything, including the morning coffee was cold by the time it made its way to the table. They should refund 50% of every patrons bill who stayed the week we were there...and should ETHICALLY have informed all travel agents and direct callers of the conditions during this renovation and the outdated and run-down quality of their rooms, furnishings and lack of standard amenities. BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT OF OUR TRAVELING EXPERIENCE TO DATE!! Read less

At the outset, I’d like to say this is a problem with corporate and management, not the staff. The staff were professional and friendly and did about as well as I could have expected anyone to do given the circumstances, but there was only so much they could have done. I booked my trip in April 2021. My reason for selecting Auberge was that I stayed in the Maliouhana in Anguilla during the holidays in 2019, and I was impressed by the quality of hotel and the Auberge hotel concept (unique, luxury, boutique-style hotels that are different in each location, and great food/service). The experience I was provided was nothing close to that standard. When I booked the hotel in April, I expected to be able to have a historic indoor lobby, billiards in the lobby, a spa, a fire pit outdoors, and the hotel also promised daily oyster-shucking classes at 5pm. Most of the experience I bargained for when I booked my trip was unavailable. I did not see this anywhere in writing before I booked my trip, and there were no negative reviews on Tripadvisor at the time. I was only notified by phone ONE WEEK before the trip commenced via phone by the concierge. On that call, all that was disclosed was that the lobby would be unavailable. This was very frustrating, but it turned out that the spa, fire pit, and oyster shucking classes were also unavailable. I could also hear lobby construction noise during my stay. There were regular lengthy delays with the one elevator that everyone in the building had to share. There were also ants in the shower, and something on the couch I couldn’t identify but seemed to be either a cockroach or a beetle, which I informed the staff of and the staff diligently attended to after the fact, but very unsettling nonetheless.
