The Vanderbilt

Rhode Island, New England

The hotel

Welcome to one of Newport’s famous mansions, built by Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt himself in 1909. Recently restored to its former glory, it combines unmatched heritage with a modern service ethos that has made it the recipient of numerous hospitality awards. A welcoming glass of champagne sets the mood, after which you’ll be delighted by the sheer sumptuousness of your guest room. There are two swimming pools to tempt you, one indoor and one outdoor, the latter the perfect suntrap in summer. Alternatively, head to the Spa for one of the Vanderbilt’s signature treatments, including the Duet massage, perfect for couples, mothers and daughters or best friends. The bright and airy Conservatory is a wonderful place to linger over breakfast or lunch, whilst the Muse is renowned for serving outstanding cuisine in an historic setting. Before dinner, sip on a delicious Grace cocktail whilst tapping your toes to some suitably Jazzed-up music.

We loved the feel of the hotel and the service was impeccable, made us feel right at home. Wonderful hotel with very special ambience. Guest rooms spacious and clean with beautiful decor. Excellent dining. Service team friendly and professional. And, of course, Newport is a fun town to enjoy. My wife and I can't wait to return!

Pros: - Super friendly staff. Everyone was really accommodating and provided really great customer service. - Warm pool with unlimited towels. Emphasis on warm, we LOVED how cozy it was. - Great kid-friendly activities. You need to notify them in advance for the scavenger hunt so they can prepare. My kids (5 and 6) loved it. - Smores for kids. Great cocktails. - Good food! - Turn down service, attentive housekeeping. Cons: - Pool is EXTREMELY slippery. Like extremely. Just walking caused some slips and falls. Please be careful. - We stayed in Captain's Loft, which was great for kids (they did the teepee set up which was fun), however, its really easy for the kids to bump their heads against the stairs. Happened a few times. Family tips: - Capain's Loft has microwave, sink, mini-fridge. Was great for feeding the kids a quick breakfast. Bring your own tupperware for restaurant leftovers and reheat. There is also small Nespresso machine, may be worth it to buy your own coffee condiments as room service is always $$. Was a great stay. I have discerning tastes and would recommend. Read less
