The Vanderbilt

Rhode Island, New England

The hotel

Welcome to one of Newport’s famous mansions, built by Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt himself in 1909. Recently restored to its former glory, it combines unmatched heritage with a modern service ethos that has made it the recipient of numerous hospitality awards. A welcoming glass of champagne sets the mood, after which you’ll be delighted by the sheer sumptuousness of your guest room. There are two swimming pools to tempt you, one indoor and one outdoor, the latter the perfect suntrap in summer. Alternatively, head to the Spa for one of the Vanderbilt’s signature treatments, including the Duet massage, perfect for couples, mothers and daughters or best friends. The bright and airy Conservatory is a wonderful place to linger over breakfast or lunch, whilst the Muse is renowned for serving outstanding cuisine in an historic setting. Before dinner, sip on a delicious Grace cocktail whilst tapping your toes to some suitably Jazzed-up music.

This iconic Newport property was recently taken over by the Resorts Collection. That has resulted in a renewed emphasis on the restaurant cuisine and hotel amenities. The public spaces in the Vanderbilt might make one think of being in a Newport mansion, as the room size and furnishings are both tasteful and of high quality. I chose to go there last night for dinner because of these two factors: setting and cuisine. And I was not disappointed with either. The menu is quite original in its suggestions, and the wine & drinks lists extensive. What did not work last night was the service. We were greeted by a man who, from his dress, was presumed to be the Maître d'. He took our coats, and then disappeared, leaving us waiting to be assigned a table. Once seated, we soon became aware that there was a large private party elsewhere in the building that soaked up most of the wait staff. Our waiter was both pleasant and knowledgeable -- when we saw him. In the end, we were adequately served and, as I say, the food (mussels in curry sauce, duck breast or monkfish) was well prepared. The star, however, should be given to the pastry chef, who made desserts both artistically presented and very tasty. Read less

This hotel is perfectly located, a block off Thames St and a few blocks from Bellevue Ave. We left the car at the hotel and walked everywhere. The rooms are elegantly appointed. The staff is lovely. Very welcoming and helpful. They setup S’mores at night for the fireplace along with board games. It’s a small property so you feel very at home.… Read more

We were disappointed because we have been following the Dick Lupino Band for many years. Then today a friend called and said they got an email that there was a big bash there with a DJ. Boy what a slap in the face. I will have to check with my friend for next year. Really who wants to pay $30 for music then $50 for open bar wine and beer. This is Newport, there is old money people who live and come to Newport. Do you really think we want a DJ. I am so annoyed they did not just tell me the truth and say "Oh we have a DJ this year" Where I could have replied are you out of your mind. Read less

Other than that, love this place! Read less

The welcome beverage was a bit odd (apple cider and root beer mixed together), but everyone was so warm and welcoming. Our room was very large (we booked the junior suite) and clean. There are many charming sitting areas in this hotel and we loved the billiards room. We did not have the opportunity to eat at the hotel, there are so many good restaurants in Newport, but the dining areas looked lovely. It was a very relaxing stay. Read less
