The Vanderbilt

Rhode Island, New England

The hotel

Welcome to one of Newport’s famous mansions, built by Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt himself in 1909. Recently restored to its former glory, it combines unmatched heritage with a modern service ethos that has made it the recipient of numerous hospitality awards. A welcoming glass of champagne sets the mood, after which you’ll be delighted by the sheer sumptuousness of your guest room. There are two swimming pools to tempt you, one indoor and one outdoor, the latter the perfect suntrap in summer. Alternatively, head to the Spa for one of the Vanderbilt’s signature treatments, including the Duet massage, perfect for couples, mothers and daughters or best friends. The bright and airy Conservatory is a wonderful place to linger over breakfast or lunch, whilst the Muse is renowned for serving outstanding cuisine in an historic setting. Before dinner, sip on a delicious Grace cocktail whilst tapping your toes to some suitably Jazzed-up music.

This was our first trip to Newport and the Vanderbilt staff made the experience extremely pleasant and relaxing. Hotel was centrally located and the accommodation was most luxurious. Suite was gigantic and comfortable. Bathrooms were spectacular.

This is a wonderful old building with charm and character. So, expect to find it that way. The staff were very warm and friendly, but the hotel is going thru a transition and they still have work to do. We booked a suite, $600/night (our anniversary) and I have to admit the charm factor wore off pretty soon. The windows are old and drafty, and the radiators are too loud to sleep. The restaurant was also charming, but the $48 entree was over done, the waiter poured me half a glass of wine. Literally. I figured he would come back with the other half, but alas. At the Spa, we had to wait for 15 mins in the hallway in our robes, and my 90 mins massage ended after 75 mins. This is a lovely old property in a great location but as I drove away I couldn't help thinking of Fawlty Towers. Read less
