Vanderbilt Grace

Rhode Island, New England

The hotel

Welcome to one of Newport’s famous mansions, built by Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt himself in 1909. Recently restored to its former glory, it combines unmatched heritage with a modern service ethos that has made it the recipient of numerous hospitality awards. A welcoming glass of champagne sets the mood, after which you’ll be delighted by the sheer sumptuousness of your guest room. There are two swimming pools to tempt you, one indoor and one outdoor, the latter the perfect suntrap in summer. Alternatively, head to the Spa for one of the Vanderbilt’s signature treatments, including the Duet massage, perfect for couples, mothers and daughters or best friends. The bright and airy Conservatory is a wonderful place to linger over breakfast or lunch, whilst the Muse is renowned for serving outstanding cuisine in an historic setting. Before dinner, sip on a delicious Grace cocktail whilst tapping your toes to some suitably Jazzed-up music.

The historical Vanderbilt Hotel is tucked in a quiet neighborhood a few blocks from the wharf. Walking to the shops and restaurants was easy and pleasant. The hotel has full amenities and a scenic rooftop bar with a fabulous view of the water. Great staff and beautiful mansion converted into a hotel. We had a perfect 3 night stay!

We just had a romantic weekend in Newport and were very pleased with our experience at The Vanderbilt. They offer great amenities in a smaller, intimate setting. Rooms: The rooms were very spacious and would be great for a family. We would definitely return in the future with our two children. The bed was super comfortable and the bedding and towels were great quality. Only improvement would be that the rugs and furniture could use a little updating as they lack the charm of a historic house but are not modern either. Service: The staff was warm and welcoming, attentive and helpful, especially Akeem at the front desk who ensured that our room was comfortable, and Joseph at valet. They truly seemed to care about our happiness and paid attention to the details. Amenities: we had breakfast each morning in the charming outdoor garden area. Outstanding french toast! The outdoor pool has area for shade and sun and was a warm temperature. They provide large towels, water, bar service and lite bites. They have a great rooftop bar where you can watch the sunset over oysters and cocktails. Amazing burgers too! Location: on a quiet street a short walk to all the action on Thames Street and the Wharf. We enjoyed being able to walk into town for dinner each night and going for an evening stroll. It was nice not to worry about driving or parking. Near tons of great restaurants to choose from and a .5 mile - 1 mile walk to Tennis Hall of Fame and Bellevue. Read less

The Vanderbilt is in a great location, beautiful setting. Really enjoyed the garden patio and rooftop bar. New chef introducing some good quality dishes. That said, Bedrooms are dated, carpets are spotty and worn. Water damage above the bed poorly patched. The only elevator to our room was a service elevator that also opened into the kitchen. Feels like housekeeping process is not working well or not fully staffed. When we arrived our room wasn’t ready until 4:20 pm - despite a 3 pm checkin. We were offered a drink and small plate while we waited but that wasn’t the only problem. On another day our room wasn’t cleaned until after 4:30pm. When we expressed concern over this, we were told that they guaranteed service by 5 pm only. Seems very late in the day and inconsistent with the experience I’ve had 4/5 star hotels. I think the wait staff in the patio restaurant are friendly and very helpful (they deserve kudos). They are very short staffed however - long delays in getting food / drinks at pool, no one picking up the dirty cups and dishes. Limited supply of towels. Sauna was nice once we figured out how to turn it on - was completely cold at the start. Not sure what a $50 resort fee is meant to cover on top of room rates of over $600/night. Would not recommend until improvements happen. Read less

I strongly recommend the visit. Our guide was a senior man who made the tour so interesting, talking about the intimate details inside the family. We went two couples with the kids and all of us were very pleased.

The hotel is centrally located very close to the wharf and Thames street with all of the restaurants yet away from the noise and crowds of Newport. The entire hotel and grounds are beautiful, well maintained and truly relaxing. The staff is beyond attentive, friendly and service oriented. We had breakfast at the hotel in the morning. These us a large selection and the food was unique and was perfectly prepared. We also went up to the roof top deck for light snacks and drinks to see the sunset which was a great experience. The outdoor pool and lounge chairs are a perfect place to just relax before heading out to a nice dinner. This is the place to stay if you are looking to treat yourself to a very memorable experience. I’m looking forward to staying here the next time we’re up in Newport, Read less
