Dream Downtown

Chelsea, New York

The hotel

The designers at Dream Downtown had fun when they transformed this 1960s’ National Maritime Union building, opposite Chelsea Market and near the Meatpacking District. In a nod to its past, the gritty steel shell features super-sized portholes, while inside it takes you around the globe. You visit Mexico in the tequila barrel wall and upscale menu of Bodega Negra. You visit ‘Cool Britannia’ in the underground Electric Room, with its Banksy-inspired graffiti. And you return to NYC with the penthouse parties at PHD Rooftop Lounge and the lobby’s huge Stars and Stripes flag made from beer cans, which sits below the glass-bottomed pool.

We arrived and our room smelled like cigarettes. Our TV didn’t work. We called to ask them to fix it and no one answered, continually calling for a total of 12 minutes...12. The technician came. They couldn’t fix the tv. No one cared. I reached out the next day and the manager didn’t care. I didn’t have time to move hotels. Once I got back the second night the TV still didn’t work and the hallways reeked of marijuana. When asked for at least 1 night refunded due to the TV the hotel totally ignored me and never got back to me. Oh also there were call girls and club promoters all in the lobby bar at 10pm when I got home last night. DO NOT STAY HERE. Read less

They felt like you were sleeping on 2 down comforters on the floor. The walls are paper thin, I could hear the conversation next door as if they were in our room at the foot of the bed. The light controls/switches did not dim so it was very bright in the middle of the night. Only good thing was the Philippe restaurant... now that was really good. Just got a little lost trying to find it down the elevator... LOL. If we attend the event next year we will unfortunately book our stay at another hotel. Read less

I wish I could say I was able to dream in this hotel. Thankfully the trip was short. Its a great location, but not for a Friday night unless you really want to party as this seems to be the main location. Also the rooms do hear quite a lot of the noise from the bar and club. Rooms very compact

The restaurants that are attached to this property are very good and it is conveniently across the street from the Chelsea market which makes it easy to grab water, etc. 14th street subway nearby. All in all a good stay, if a little loud at night with revelers coming home at all hours making alot of noise in the hallway. Read less
