DoubleTree by Hilton Metropolitan - New York City

New York, USA

The hotel

In the on-trend East Side, this is a Midtown must for those wanting to see the sights and shop the shops of NYC without having to wander far. In fact, it’s just blocks from the boutiques of Fifth Avenue and treats of Bloomingdale’s, and a stroll from guidebook favourites like Central Park, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, and Radio City Music Hall. It may be surrounded by iconic architecture, but Doubletree by Hilton Metropolitan holds its own in the style stakes. Originally the brainchild of Art Deco architect Morris Lapidus, it’s been brought back to its former glory while being bolstered by modern traveller musts, like its Met Grill, where you can tuck into full stateside or Continental breakfasts, and its Met Bar, a trendy lounge with cocktails, oversized sports screens, and an evening menu of ‘Met Bar Bites’.

We arrived today after a gruelling journey from Vegas, we were met at the front desk by John Johnson who couldn't have been nicer or any more helpful. Great room too. He gave us cookies and lots of information about the area. Great service

This hotel is terrible! The staff couldn’t care less and doesn’t greet you with so much as a “welcome!”. The upkeep and condition is a while other nightmare. Keeping all this aside, the beds were comfortable and the location is great, but it is hard to ignore the condition of this hotel. Needless to say, I am not coming back to this property again. My friends & family decided to stay here based on proximity and location during our recent vacation in New York - there were 8 of us, equating out to 3 rooms. One room had a dirty hair net on the floor of the bathroom upon arrival. It was a sign of things to come. During the entirety of our stay, we encountered everything from rude staff members who refused to let us cash in on our complimentary water bottles, to housekeeping entering our rooms without knocking while we were sleeping, to never receiving an iron after calling three times, to brown water coming out of the sink/tub at 9am - yes, you read that correctly, BROWN WATER. Don't worry, I'll be sure to post of photo of it that will literally churn your stomach to its core. When we approached management about the above, the manager replied "What water problem?" - this effected the whole hotel, including their kitchen, so there's no way he was uninformed. He was unyielding and downright uninterested in rectifying the situation, even after we told him that one member of our party was brushing their teeth when the water catastrophe happened, and another member of our party was literally in the shower, conditioner still in her hair, when the brown water began shooting out. Disgusting. He acts like it was a completely normal, everyday situation that he has nothing to do with, and wasn't responsible for helping with - thanks for nothing, Christopher Malcaus. Upon checkout, when we decided to try our terrible luck again with a different manager, I approached a front desk staff member, gave her a cheerful "Hi!" to which she replied back with "uh" without looking up from her computer. I stood waiting for a proper greeting, to which she keep staring at her computer and finally said "If you need something, you can go get in that line." Soooo accommodating! I asked to speak to management again. The last manager we spoke to, Kristina, was much more responsive - she asked us to run back through our laundry list of problems, and offered us points. That obviously doesn't help repay all 8 of us for our experience, especially considering part of our group had enough and decided to stay elsewhere on their last night, but it also doesn't quite compensate for the absurd and extreme inconveniences. Please take your business to the Marriotts down the street, trust me, you will be glad you did! Read less
