DoubleTree by Hilton Metropolitan - New York City

Midtown, New York

The hotel

In the on-trend East Side, this is a Midtown must for those wanting to see the sights and shop the shops of NYC without having to wander far. In fact, it’s just blocks from the boutiques of Fifth Avenue and treats of Bloomingdale’s, and a stroll from guidebook favourites like Central Park, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, and Radio City Music Hall. It may be surrounded by iconic architecture, but Doubletree by Hilton Metropolitan holds its own in the style stakes. Originally the brainchild of Art Deco architect Morris Lapidus, it’s been brought back to its former glory while being bolstered by modern traveller musts, like its Met Grill, where you can tuck into full stateside or Continental breakfasts, and its Met Bar, a trendy lounge with cocktails, oversized sports screens, and an evening menu of ‘Met Bar Bites’.

There's lots of distinctly average reviews on here, but I have to say we had a great stay at the Metropolitan. Staff were friendly and helpful, the room was comfortable (ok, a little bit small and showing a bit of wear and tear - but fine. This is a big old city, and we've paid more in London and it been much worse!). Also the location is… Read more

Also the location is fantastic for the Subway, Time Square, Broadway, Grand Central, Empire State etc, etc. Special thanks to the Breakfast team for finding and keeping hold of my son's prescription sunglasses. You guys were great!! Read less

This is an great location on Lexington, 15 minute walk to Times Square the the theater district. ($10 cab ride for 2). There is a subway stop just across the street and lots of choices for food very close by. So you're away from the frantic pace of Times Square, close to Madison and 5th Ave. The room size was typical for a NYC mid price… Read more

There is a subway stop just across the street and lots of choices for food very close by. So you're away from the frantic pace of Times Square, close to Madison and 5th Ave. The room size was typical for a NYC mid price hotel. The bathroom was small with amazing water pressure in the shower! The lobby is VERY busy it seems. My complaint: Check in was painfully slow with only two people behind the desk. 6 people in line. A few other people behind the desk meandering around. This is at 3 pm which is check-in time. They should have known a lot of people check in at check-in time and had appropriate staff. The staff I interacted with was pleasant. The room was updated but still felt older. Sort of lipstick on a pig kind of thing. I didn't book through their website, which I think was a mistake...my room overlooked a rooftop alley. Being a Hilton Honors guest didn't do much for me in securing a better room. Read less

I typically lower my standards when staying in NYC. What a very nice property and would stay here again. Rooms are small but very comfortable. All of the staff was friendly and my room was quiet. Subway stop very close to hotel and plenty of places to eat.

Drinks and meals are expensive e.g. a shot of Scotch Whisky is $12. The staff at the counters lack the friendly customer attitude and service as should be expected of a hotel of such caliber. The rooms are tidy and very well serviced. The furniture of the room 1413 has seen better days and the bathroom door appear to be on its last legs. British visitors please note that a Queen Bed is just a double bed as in British standards. Read less

Don't try to sleep late at this hotel. The previous guest in our room left an alarm set for 6:00am, waking us up the first time. Next, the maid knocked so loudly on the next door at 8:00am (on a Saturday) that it woke us up. The third wake-up was when she knocked on our door at 8:45am. Want coffee? First, find the well-hidden restaurant. Then, wait as the staff rolls its eyes while ducking into the back to retrieve a cup of bitter brown liquid. Want the free bottles of water that they give you a coupon for? Good luck finding a bartender who is supposed to dispense it. As for the room, the doors are thin and the furnishings show signs of wear, particularly in the bathroom. Want a late checkout? The latest we could arrange was 12:30 - some elite benefit of HHonors. But then again, HHonors really seems to have nothing to do with this hotel. They have no HHonors checkin line, just a long queue snaking toward the entrance. There are far better hotels in Manhattan at a similar price point. I'm staying elsewhere next time. Read less
