Dream Downtown

Chelsea, New York

The hotel

The designers at Dream Downtown had fun when they transformed this 1960s’ National Maritime Union building, opposite Chelsea Market and near the Meatpacking District. In a nod to its past, the gritty steel shell features super-sized portholes, while inside it takes you around the globe. You visit Mexico in the tequila barrel wall and upscale menu of Bodega Negra. You visit ‘Cool Britannia’ in the underground Electric Room, with its Banksy-inspired graffiti. And you return to NYC with the penthouse parties at PHD Rooftop Lounge and the lobby’s huge Stars and Stripes flag made from beer cans, which sits below the glass-bottomed pool.

Ignoring for a moment that the north elevator bank always smells like sewage, there was an even worse experience with smells in my room. I had to work late just about every night during my recent stay, and there's a tiny 'desk' on the wall to put my laptop on. Each night as I sat there working, I would frequently get a whiff of really strong air freshener, like the kind you smell in public toilets. And it was giving me the worst headaches, and itchy, burning eyes. I called the staff about it several times and they assured me they didn't have anything like that in the rooms, and housekeeping said they didn't do anything like that. I turned the room over more than once trying to find where it was coming from, and I thought I was maybe just losing my mind. But on the fourth night I finally found it! Hidden inside the hollow spaces in the desk where I'd been working were bits of a scented urinal screen that had been cut into little pieces. Some were caked in dust and had been there for years, others were brand new. Maintenance crew came by and acted surprised to see that, but that was all I got from the staff. I complained to front desk workers, and they said a manager would get back to me, but they never responded. If you like your hotel and room smelling like a men's toilet, this place is for you. It's definitely not for me. Lastly, the room was not stocked with glassware other than two tumblers in the bathroom; no facial tissue; missing items in the mini-bar which I could've been charged for had I not noticed and said something. At 2 AM a man yelled “everybody on the ground, now!” This is just totally unacceptable, and when we finally did call to complain, the phone died! We were supposed to stay an extra night, but checked out early, and at check out we explained the situation to pretty much deaf ears. Our “facility fee” for one of the nights was waved, what a joke. Additionally, as a general comment, the doors in this hotel have to be slammed shut and that contributes to a chaotic feeling as well. Definitely not a place you can relax in. Read less

Was not told at check in there would be a $150 per DAY charge on my CC (I had planned to stay for 4 days and only realized this per day charge as I was looking at my credit card statement - I was shocked to see a $600 hold on my card after having pre-paid nearly $1600 for a four night stay. Next: While the room was fine, I ended up being up until almost 5am as the music from the lobby was blasted through the hotel until 4am. I could feel the bass in my body, my bed was vibrating and the walls were too. It was unreal. Not one person at any point of booking or check in ever mentioned they turn their lobby space into a MASSIVE party. I was here for work and completely missed my entire next day due to being a total zombie. They let me out of the last two nights, thankfully (the right thing to do). I'll never stay at another Dream hotel. I can't even believe places like this exist. What a terrible place. Read less

I have been all over the world and traveled at the best of best hotels to the slums of all... never have I ever heard of a hotel CHARGING for a bucket/cup of ice ... NEVER heard such a crazy thing ... makes the whole stay here a downfall cause I’m afraid to ask for extra towels now cause that might be a charge
Image of the Tripadvisor rating Excellent for families and when running solo. But it’s the staff (and pool and clubs) which make it a super steal

It’s hard to imagine a more boutique feeling hotel with an all year pool 24 hour room service top-notch clubs for as cheap as you get when staying at dream downtown. But I’m not writing about that, but instead about the staff. Whether you have two little kids who enjoy the adults pool too much to a mom who is little too vocally pro-trump with who… Read more

But I’m not writing about that, but instead about the staff. Whether you have two little kids who enjoy the adults pool too much to a mom who is little too vocally pro-trump with who ever she meets, or some tired parents that need some help, everyone here was super friendly and accommodating. Not the experience I’m used to in nyc, but I could. This is our second trip here this year. Really impressive. Read less
