The hotel

From the moment you walk into this hotel and marvel at the modern, lamella-inspired light fixtures in the Lobby-Living Room, designed by renowned UK light sculptor, Bruce Munroe, you know you’re somewhere special! Guest rooms are breathtakingly modern and ultra comfortable with large picture windows framing perfectly the city landscape. The signature W bed is a delight to sink into at the end of a busy day or stay up and catch a late night movie (no doubt with NYC as a backdrop!) on your flatscreen TV. You’ll also adore the Whatever/Whenever concierge service, able to bag you tickets to the latest Knicks game or a table at any restaurant in town. Talking of eats and drinks, the W Living Room Bar & Terrace is actually one of the places to be seen downtown, whisking up every kind of cocktail you can think of in double-quick time.

We ended up with a corner room which was awesome having huge windows on 2 sides of the room. I was hoping for a view of the WTC but this view was nice as well. Cons: the toilet ran the ENTIRE time we were there, and the heater made a very loud, weird noise at night. Other than that, it was a very nice place and I would definitely stay there again! Read less

My teenage daughter and I felt very safe around the area and walked everywhere. Metro station is only about a block away, super convenient! Lots to see and do around the hotel. Starbucks right around the corner was very convenient for grabbing morning coffee on the go, although I should mention the hotel does have free coffee and tea in the lobby area. We were given a room on the 14th floor and the views were SPECTACULAR! We would love to stay here again! Read less

I've spent eight days in this hotel over the last three weeks -- I work in FiDi four days a week, so in my quest to try most of the hotels in the area, the W was on the list. This hotel demonstrates how hard it is to maintain hipness. It's 10 years old and tastes have moved on from the dark, foreboding entryway and lobby. The lobby is mostly empty because it is, in a word, bleak. It’s also uncomfortable in the way that only “fashionable” people can make something uncomfortable. The decor in the rooms -- sort of an IKEA vibe in white -- is getting shabby from a hard decade of use. The hallways are both ugly (I know, I know, it's a matter of taste) and beat-up. The views of Ground Zero are impressive if you want to pay for it. And I do like the showers (in fugly brown tile). But there are two things about this hotel that really put me off. First, it stinks of what the staff calls "W Scent." It's _everywhere_. And no matter what you do, no matter how many times you ask, no matter when you ask, even if you use the mobile app for Marriott gold members in advance of arrival, you'll get a room that smells of this low-rent perfume. (How good can it be when they must buy it by the gallon?) I've tried using the app to request a scent-free room; I've tried calling; I've pleaded with the front desk people. On my first visit, they gave me a room that smelled like 20-year-old stale W Scent; the window wouldn't open the crack that it was designed to so no ventilation was possible. It was agnoy. On my second stay, I got a room that smelled like only a small puddle of W Scent had been used before my arrival. On the second day of this stay, I left a note for Housekeeping pleading with them for fresh pillows that didn't smell like aged-in-the-barrel W Scent. That reduced the odor to a level where shallow breaths didn't choke me. But on the morning of my third night, I forgot to leave a note for Housekeeping. Returning from a long day of work, I discovered the room had been made up with what must have been a garden spray container's worth of W Scent. And that brings me to the staff. They're as inhospitable as one would expect of the gatekeepers to a dungeon, which is the best description of the lobby. Only the freakishly hidden lurker -- I mean doorman at the (dark as night) first floor entryway -- even said hello or good day to me during either stay. Expect Housekeeping to know you are scent-sensitive because you made a stink (ha, ha) about getting a room that isn't perfumed? Come back from work to discover an extra helping of the smell. Ask the staff on the mobile app chat for a W Scent-free room? Don't expect an answer. Ask for a paper bill at checkout? Be met with silence. Expect a smile from the dungeon keepers? Fuggadaboutit. It's as if the staff thinks that because they are in a "boutique" hotel (how exclusive could a Marriott chain property be?), they can be as snooty as they like. The bottom line is, neither the hotel nor the staff's attitude are aging well. I can only recommend this overpriced hotel to travelers for whom a whiff of fashion and smelling like dime-store perfume are your idea of a high-end hotel stay. Read less

So to start it’s a little bit annoying to go in one set of elevators then have to go out and around to the next to even get to your room but it’s not the worst things ever. The rooms are nice but small which is to be expected for NYC... and of course it’s downtown which can be a pain depending on where you going ...a quick suggestion is better mirror placement and lighting. The lighting in the room is dim and could use a bit more and the one long mirror inside the closet door just doesn’t do the trick. But for a NYC hotel good enough size and nice room the cleaning staff was wonderful and they accept pets so that’s always a plus as my friend had her dog with her during the stay! Read less

Room cleanliness was superb and services provided however disappointed no tea / coffee facilities in the room. All staff were really friendly especially the night porter Eric who was super friendly and couldn't do enough for us - a true credit to your company. You cannot access the rooms from ground level having to change lifts at reception, great security feature. Lots of facilities nearby including Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, lots of Metro Lines and shopping centre. Walk away from great views of the Hudson, Statue of Liberty and Staten Island Ferry Terminal. Would thoroughly recommend a stay at this hotel and I will definitely re book on returning !! Read less
